BHDrvx86.sys issue

After having NIS 2009 running for a few months, I got a popup telling me that Norton was broken and I needed to reinstall.  I tried but it failed to reinstall.  I've gone through scans now with Norton, Malwarebytes (never showing anything other than a tracking cookie); through some registry fixes with Norton techs; even installing the product in safe mode, but the reinstalls continue to fail.  BTW, I'm running Vista Business SP1, up to date with the current MS updates.

I've noticed this in my event viewer:

Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid.  The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

File Name:    \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\drivers\NIS\1005000.087\BHDrvx86.sys

I've run tests on the drive and don't suspect it of being a problem.  So, I'm stumped.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Before you reinstalled did you run Norton Removal Tool? If not you would be advised to do so.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Yep, between my own and Norton support, I think the uninstall tool has been run ten or more times now.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

As a test, if you can get to main interface after an install, try turning Tamper Protection OFF and rebooting.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hmm..

So you ran the NRT and rebooted and ran it again and rebooted and tried to Install NIS 2009 to no avail.

Try this:

1. Delete the NIS DIRECTORY in the Windows\System32\Drivers

2. Run the NRT again, reboot, run NRT again, reboot.

3. Click on Start - Command Prompt and type in the following - CHKDSK /F then press enter.

4. Reboot the system and go into your program files directory and see if there are three Norton folders, if so - delete them.

5. Try installing NIS 2009 from this link HERE.  You will need your Product Key for the reinstall.

Kindly report back here.

Thanks -

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

If you mean the main Norton interface, I never get that far.  The installer attempts to load the drivers and then begins generating error logs.  The install is never completed.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi -

Please use Windows Explorer to browse to that directory within Windows itself.

You do not have to open *anything* in Norton.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Compumind, sorry, I may have confused matters by not indicating that I was replying to the "Tamper Protection" response of dbrisendine when I was discussing entering the Norton interface.

I'm downloading the new copy of NIS now and will follow up after I give it all a shot.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

This information would suggest that you have an unsigned driver somewhere

www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files.html

The following is a link to a Vista File Check Tool that may pinpoint the issue

www.vistax64.com/software-tools/183170-system-file-check-tool.html

Inspite of the name of the file, it is for 32 bit as well.

The following link is a Microsoft article on how to repair any files the System Check Tool can't repair.

Hi delphinium:

Kindly check the links given in your above post.

Do they work for you?

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Compumind & Delphinium, I've tried your suggestions to no avail. Same pattern--with the installer failing and the event log registering that the driver is failing code integrity in the event log.  No other file is listed there with the same problem.  chkdsk /f runs without errors.

System File Check doesn't find any problematic files either.

I'm thinking there must be something bad in the Vista installation but I'm not convinced of that because to resolve this issue initially I reverted to a system image I took before the problem started and after a few days it began again.

Other thoughts?

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi darrix -

Understood.

Please visit Window Update and see if there is a .MSI installer file update patch. If not,  please tell me what applications and utilities are running on the current system. Note that NIS 2009 should not run with any other real-time AV ot Firewall software.

I believe that the driver you had mentioned is a Symantec Heuristics Driver, which is required by the software.

Perhaps there are some stuck Registry Keys that need to be refreshed - however, I would think that the NRT would have done this.

Do you still have the previous (normal) image of the OS to reinstall? This seems to be a Vista related issue to me.

Thanks.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

In that same folder there should also be a file BHDrvx86.cat. Open that file and see if it says that the security catalog is valid. Additionally, make sure that there is a file named BHDrvx86.inf in the same folder. If any of these three files is missing or incorrect/damaged in any way, you'll receive this error in event viewer.

If everything looks alright, please report the version information for BHDrvx86.sys. If you open the .INF file with Notepad, please report the value in DriverVer.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Since the installer cleans up the driver directory, I grabbed these on one of my last attempts before they are removed.  The security catalog says it is valid.  The BHDrvx86.sys file is present and seems fine--the digital signature is intact, the file version is 5.5.0.43 and the size is 258608 bytes.  The inf file is also present and it contains the following

DriverVer= 01/27/2009,5.5.0.43

On a lark, I tried installing Norton 360 and it fails in the same way with the only difference being the directory path that the 360 drivers installs into.

I too am thinking the problem is Vista--but the only thing that keeps me from buying into that is the fact that all of its system files check out and that no other file is showing the same issue in the event log.

One other thing I think might be part of the puzzle--during the period when NIS ran happily on my box, rarely there were periods when the the box would lock up for no apparent reason.  Invariably, however, there were three events in my event log just before the lockup--the loading of eeCtrl, BHDrvx86 and luafv into the Filter Manager.  The lockups were relatively far apart and I had hadn't had them before I started using Norton.

Anyway, I think that's all I have.

I like the Norton product and the help I've received on this board has been great.  It does seem to me that the installer doesn't provide enough help on the failure side.  Even though I've spent many hours on-line with Norton support, we were simply repeating the same steps time after time, even though the call had been "escalated".

Thanks

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Just so I'm clear--there's a lot more in the inf file.  That's just the driver version info.

Let's wait until Reese has a chance to respond.

We will get you working again with NIS. Curiously, is it possible for you ro revert to an earlier system image?

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

darrix, since the installation is failing, I'd look in the installation logs for any errors. Searching from the bottom up is probably the best.  Look for a file beginning with "NortonInstall" in one of the two following locations...

For XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NortonInstaller\Logs

For Vista: C:\ProgramData\NortonInstaller\Logs

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

I went in and took a look and don't see anything that jumps out at me.  OTOH, I also have the log from Jan-2 which did load successfully.   If it would be helpful I can send those two logs to Norton.  I acknowledge however that both Windows and NIS were changing over that period so it may not clear anything up.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

I do have a backup from early-to-mid March while things were running.  Also, this is Vista Business SP1 3gb ram, 320 gb hdd on a Lenovo x61 tablet.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi darrix -

You certainly have a great deal of stuff running!

Let me sit with this a bit and analyze the process output.

Hang tight.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi Darrix -

Please boot into Safe Mode with Networking, and see what Processes are running - don't worry - the list will be *way* shorter!!

If there are any non-windows processes, please disable them temporarily via the MSCONFIG utility.

Look in your Program Files Directory and delete the three Norton directories, if not already deleted.

In addition, please delete the Norton files in  C:\ProgramData\NortonInstaller, since you are using Vista.

Run the NRT once more and then (without reboot) install NIS2009 (EXE package you downloaded earlier.)

If this procedure does not work, I would probably reload your system, OS first with Updates and Patches, add NIS 2009 from scratch and load your programs one at a time, checking for compatibility problems. Reboot after each major application, especially Networking which is more closely tied to the OS.

Let us know how you do.

Thanks.

P.S. There is a tool called Combofix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix#intro that you might wish to try before you blow your HDD away. It is used for Malware detection/removal - I would like to see if it picks up anything.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Tried installing in safe mode with networking after minimizing the processes to as little as possible, cleaned up everything beforehand, but still same result.  Next stop, reinstalling Vista.  Will report back.

Ran combofix and I don't see anything there but will submit to bleepingcomputers and see if they can find something.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

I'm not sure whether or not this is relevant but I'm finding a topic on MS's TechNet titled "Security Event Log Audit Failure 5038 in Vista SP1 tcpip.sys" where they are discussing code integrity failures.  A MS rep responds that "We are actively investigating this issue and looking into a resolution for SP2 RC."  The URL is http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/itprovistasp/thread/771809bc-5d3a-4c58-9aca-7815b72c6f65/  I can't tell from the install log whether this is the trigger for the failure but it might be looking into.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi darrix -

That issue, though interesting, has to my knowledge been remedied by Vista SP2.

I can't find any newer posts on the subject.

Let's keep it in mind as you go through the restoration!

Thanks.

I see Setpoint.exe in your files.  Are you still running  a Logitech mouse or keyboard?  If so, could you check your version? And whether a cordless or wireless mouse?

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Delphinium, yes, I have a corded usb logitech mouse.  I went back and checked and this driver was present for the 2.5 months NIS worked without issues.  Is there a potential conflict you're thinking of?

Thanks

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi darrix -

Always have the latest drivers from the vendor's website and you can scan the downloads individually to ensure that nothing nasty is in them!

How is it going with your restoration?

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi Darrix:

I'm still thinking that it is some kind of driver issue.  Setpoint and Logitceh have had issues.  The only version that is approved for Vista is Setpoint 3.30.  I hate to see somebody have to reformat for something that might be an easy fix.  Plus if you reload the same programs and drivers, the same problem will resurface.

It concerns me that restore didn't solve the problem, which, to me indicates that nothing changed from one time to another, just the reaction to it.  All of the uninstalls, and reinstalls did not solve the issue, which, if it was a faulty installation would have solved the problem.  You have a lot of stuff running in your computer, any one of which has its own drivers, and any one of which can cause a problem.  You could actually reinstall a faulty program without a problem, and not see it happening until two other programs are added.  Then you still don't know where the conflict is.

If you've already dumped it, make sure that all of the Windows security patches are done prior to any reinstallations in the hopes that it gets picked up before you spend days and days reloading.

I suffer for you!

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi Delphinium -

The user is not going to format the existing disk, but build from a spare.

The idea here is that the problem cannot easily be isolated, so it might be faster to slowly rebuild and check.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Thanks for the additional info--no I think the Logitech driver is ok.  It was identified on their site as being for Vista and is version 4.70.  And it's been on the system for as long as Norton has.

True, I'm not looking forward to the reinstall but, as Compumind indicated, I am working with a spare drive so things could be a lot worse!

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

darrix,

Are you still having trouble installing NIS 2009? Were you able to get the installation logs as mentioned by Reese? If we could look at those, that might be helpful in narrowing down the problem.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Yep, I'm still having the issue and haven't had time to rebuild the system yet. I do have the install logs; where should I send them to?

Thanks for the help.

Darrix:

Are you able to get into Norton sufficiently to turn advanced heuristic protection  off?

Also, have you updated to the .net Framework 3.5?

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Hi

No I can't turn off the heuristic protection; the install failes before I get any options except for the norton folder protection.

And yes I do have .net 3.5 on this box

You can send me a Private Message ( ) icon on the top right corner of the message board. Use notepad to open the log file, and paste the content of the log into the private message.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

darrix,

According to your install logs, the install failed on file SymIMIns.exe. After that the install rolled back. It seems to have failed on this every time an install was attempted.

Logs indicated that pre-install scan was initiated then cancelled. Did you ever let it run completely? There will be a file in the same directory as the install log called scanresults.txt. It will show if any threats were found. Sometimes if there is a pre-existing threat on the system, the install will not complete.

Re: BHDrvx86.sys issue

Yes, I've let it run before--here's a copy of it on a run where it failed to install

Just to give an update on this issue, we are investigating this currently, and trying to figure out why your SymIM.exe install failed.
