cannot open yahoo mail attachments

I can open attachments using my other local webased email account fine, but I cannot open any attachments using yahoo mail, either the beta version or the old version. Is it because yahoo email is running Norton and I am also running Norton when the attachments is scanned??  I've noticed other people are having similar issues when I google or search this type of problem. Thanks

Hi papasto

What Norton product?

What Browser?

Any chance you are using FF and NoScript?

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

I'm using NIS 2010, IE8. I switched to FireFox to see if that would solve the problem but it didn't so I have removed FF from my PC.  I don't know what you mean by if I am using NoScript??

Thanks

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi papasto

Since you asked about the conflict between your Norton product and Yahoo Norton...have you tried turning off NIS10 email scanning to see if a conflict exist.   I do not perceive a conflict as I have NIS email scan On... but, convince yourself.  Turn Off NIS email scanning and see.....

Thanks for the update...I asked about FF and NoScript because FF and NoScript has a common simple work around for allowing yahoo attachments...as your issue is with NIS10 and IE8.  We have a starting point.  Is issue new with NIS10...what security product did you have before NIS10 & did you have similiar issue.  Is your Yahoo mail via your ISP. If from your ISP...your ISP will offer free help.   This is Yahoo Mail Help Site http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/    has search bar - type ~ Attachments ~  Have you explored this option?

If your issue only started with the install of NIS10 please report back.  Trying to determine if your issue is your Yahoo account or Norton Product or IE8.   If issue is with your Yahoo account. I have yet to come across an issue that Yahoo has not already answered at their Help Site.  Does issue apply to all types of attachments or is it specific to for example PDF or jpg or ? attachments.

Thank you for your patience.  If you feel issue is related to Norton product. Please report back ASAP.

bjm_

When you open an email, the "header" section just above the message shows who the message is from and what attachments they sent you. The names of the attachments are links you can click to either open and view, or download and save to your computer. For example, if someone attached a wedding photo to their message, you'll see something in the header section like 'WildWedding.jpg'.

If you click an attachment, a window will open telling you if a virus threat was detected in the attachment. If no virus threat is detected, you can choose to click either the "Download Attachment" button or "Cancel."

Click the "Download Attachment" button. Another window opens, asking you if you would prefer to open or save this file. Opening it lets you view the file without saving it to your computer; saving it puts it on your computer's hard drive. You can also click "Cancel" if you'd like to exit this window.

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi papasto

I'm gonna' go out on a limb here and offer....your other web based email account does not have the attachment issue.  That basically eliminates your browser, your Norton product and the application used to view the attachment as causal to the issue.  I respectfully, suggest the Yahoo attachment issue is in your Yahoo account. I have run Norton and used Yahoo mail for years.   When I had a problem in my Yahoo account...the answer was in my Yahoo account.  Now, if all your web based email accounts would not open attachments.  That still points more to a browser or to the app used to view the attachment than to your Norton product.  All opinions expressed are the sole property of the author and as such are subject to change at any time.

Please report back....ASAP

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Thanks again. Tried some of your suggestions (turned off norton antivirus), searched the yahoo mail help site - various suggestions I tried but no solutions, though it seems like I am not the only one who has attachment problems on Yahoo.  All types of files do not open, wmv, pdf. jpeg. One thing, I have my laptop home from work, was able to open yahoo attachments without any problem - laptop is running mcafee.  So once again I believe it may be some type of norton antivirus in yahoo conflicting with norton antivirus 2010 loaded on my PC. I guess my next step would be to uninstall Norton from my PC and see if the attachments open again.  I'll wait unitl I hear from you bjm one more time before i try this next step.

Thanks

Of all the possibilities that occur to me,papasto, that seems least likely.  My understanding of the yahoo filtering is that it occurs when Yahoo gets the email, not when you later encounter it, which is when the local scanner would be beginning its analysis.

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi! All,

I have encountered the same problem upon contacting Yahoo tech support it was discovered that the mail server was having trouble verifying my system's IP Address.  It is Yahoo's security measures that kick in to prevent unauthorized access; for instance I cannot access certain e-mail messages from a different computer with or without an attachment.  I would suggest also downloading from Yahoo their messenger program which provides the e-mail servers the proper IP Address information.  I know some people do not like all the things included with the Messenger program; that is why I would suggest using the custon installation option to select the items you want and deselect the one's you don't want.  Also of note; Yahoo server's may think that you already signed on a different pc even when you aren't, the real irritating part is most of the time the user doen't even recieve notice if this is the case unless the are signing in via the Yahoo Messenger.

I think this is good general advice even though in this case the poster said that the problem was only with attachments.  Nonetheless, it is advice worth trying.

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi! All,

I have a question for the poster.  In using a different system was a different ISP used?  I am asking this because there are some ISP's that will block e-mail attachments heading into their servers.  But as Bjm_  stated if the Yahoo account is provided through the ISP it does change things.  (I am paraphrasing Bjm_ no direct quote implied.)

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi papasto

Sorry to learn this issue is not going away quietly.  Is Yahoo account  through your ISP or not?  I feel your are convinced there must be a Norton conflict between your resident Norton product and Yahoo Norton.  So, all the Yahoo clients having this issue all must have a resident Norton product.  All the Yahoo clients having this issue have not come knocking at this Forum to my recall.  Yahoo is just ignoring all those unhappy clients.

Please see > http://suggestions.yahoo.com/detail/?prop=answers&fid=149754

What is version of your NIS10 product.  You have checked email scan settings are at default and you turned off email scan and issue persists.  My reluctance to point to your resident Norton product is just that....Yahoo Norton is Server Side and acts on mail on Yahoo Server.  Your resident Norton acts on files you want to open on your box.  Yahoo mail does not reside anywhere on your box...all mail resides on Yahoo Servers.  Your resident Norton product does not reach out to Yahoo Servers to scan mail.  Yahoo Norton is protecting mail Server Side.   Malware travels with email and is a potential threat upon opening the file on your box that may contain Malware.... when you open an attachment your resident Norton scans for Malware.  There just can not be a conflict with user side Norton and Server side Norton.  The conflict you feel exists would have to exist with any brand Security product.  You're thinking Yahoo Norton and papasto Norton are trying to scan the attached file at the same time and therefore are conflicting and preventing the attachment from opening,  Only papasto Norton is at work when you ask to download an attached file traveling with an email message.  Yahoo does not open the attached file to scan the file.  papasto opens the attached file and your resident Norton product not Yahoo scan for malware.

Tell me what happens when you attemp to open an attached file.  Tell me what you see...

When did this issue begin.  After you installed NIS10 and how did you install NIS10 and what is the version.  When you contact Yahoo ...what response does Yahoo offer.  Have you contacted Yahoo.  I know this is long winded...I'm trying to imagine what you are experiencing only with Yahoo and not with another web based email account.   Clean out Cookies....check IE8 security at default.  Check IE8 compatibility view setup and tic box 1 and 3 and add Yahoo mail website to Compatibility View.   Are you opening IE8 in privacy mode.  Open IE normal and also try open IE without add-ons.  I really hesitate to point at IE8 because you have same issue with FF.  You can reset IE advanced settings and try opening IE without addons.  I would resist reset IE to default as that is only if browser is unstable.  Change your homepage to http://news.yahoo.com/page/sitemap and link to your yahoo mail from there.  I'm at a loss to offer anything else.  I do not see conflict you perceive with Norton....if it proves to be resident Norton that is causal ??... I cry Uncle now and beg for help from the Forum.

Hi papasto et al

Too tired to realize my previous attempt was ...poorly composed.  Very poorly composed.  I was busy composing War and Peace while others had chimed in....thanks, I knew what I wanted to convey...just did not pull it off.   Thanks... Tech83 and mijcar.... I had initially requested if Yahoo was ISP or not ...I tried again in previous reply to papasto....

Internet security software, including Firewalls, antivirus programs, anti-spyware programs, and others can block certain file downloads. Check the settings in your security software to see if there is an setting that may be blocking downloads.

To diagnose whether Internet security software is causing problems, you can try temporarily disabling it, seeing if downloads work, and then re-enabling the software.

Sorry papasto...I gave it my best shot while Mr. Sandman is working on my gray matter.

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi papasto et al

It is better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt...

Tip: With att.net Mail, effective email virus protection is automatic. Antivirus software in att.net Mail automatically detects and cleans viruses in incoming and outgoing email and attachments.

Thank you papasto ...I offer my apology for running you in circles....now, I know how my web mail works .... I always wondered why my resident Norton never populated notice in system tray.  I have only viewed  att.net Mail Antivirus working....not my resident Norton.... to verify I disabled resident email scan and Antivirus software in att.net Mail scanned my email attachment...

It is better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt...

Please be aware, however, that not all viruses can be detected and cleaned. There is a risk involved whenever you download email attachments to your computer or send email attachments to others. As provided in the Terms of Service, neither Yahoo! nor its licensors are responsible for any damages caused by your decision to do so.

As to your issue...my mouth is now closed.... I will now go stand in the corner

I've searched every where you have...I am ready to rescind my previous comments....the issue may be with NIS10....

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Thanks you all very much for your input (some of it a little to hard to follow :) ) but appreciated  none the less.  The latest is I have UNISTALLED NIS 2010 from my PC, and now all attachments in my my yahoo mail account are OPENING FINE.   So doesn't this tell me for sure that NIS is conficting with Yahoo's Norton??

Any suggestions when I reinstall NIS again (which I want to) what I should be disabling to make sure this conflict stops.

Thanks

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi papasto,

Are you using OnlineFamily.Norton parental controls?  There is an unresolved issue (not sure if this would also be your issue) with Safety  Minder blocking Yahoo email attachments which is discussed in this thread:

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Hi, no I am not using OnlineFamily.Norton parental controls - I know this is an additonal online based parental control that is having problem with yahoo attachments. I am just using the parental controls embedded in NIS 2010.

Hi papasto,

Sorry the OnlineFamily.Norton suggestion did nothing but send bjm_ back to the corner.  When reinstalling NIS, I would first check to see if you can download attachments before installing the Add-on Pack Parental Controls.  If the problem persists I would think it may be a firewall issue.  Exactly what happens when you try to open an attachment?  Does it download and fail to open, or does it not even get that far?

Papasto, I am sorry that things didn't work out and that communications were perhaps unclear.  This thread has been very disappointing to me.

I have a yahoo account and I have NIS2010.  I tried to send myself an attachment at my yahoo account.  It was successful.  It was an executable file.  The attached file was examined by Norton AV when I clicked on it.  After that it was checked by NIS Insight when I downloaded it to my desktop.  The entire thing was quick and error free.

When you have the opportunity and are willing to explore this again, please come back and start anew.  We will see what we can do.  I would hate to see you give up a valuable application simply because we don't work out what the problem was.

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

papasto

maybe Symantec rep will see thread and chime in.... the more I searched for an answer...the more I had to agree with you... even before you posted uninstalled info...I was baffled but, accepting that NIS10 was just not playing well with Yahoo.  Curious...what Security product before NIS10 and now.  I think if you had 10 for less than 60 days you can get a refund.  Were you happy with 10 if not for this Yahoo issue.  What was the other web based account that worked with 10.  Any chance you could use that account until this issue is resolved.  This issue cannot be unique to just you... either Yahoo has to fix it or Norton.  Is your Yahoo account an ISP Yahoo.

My Yahoo recently changed appearance and currently has a spell checker issue.  Did Yahoo and 10 ever play well together?  Please forgive my stubborn streak...I want this thing resolved or know the reason why.   Maybe with more background info from you...?   Do you feel the compatibility issue rests with Yahoo or Norton.   Thank you for being so patient and forgiving....

post back if you care to or best wishes

Re: cannot open yahoo mail attachments

Good News - I've Fixed and solved the problem - it had to do with parental controls in the "add on pack" which I'm using. Here is what I did.

1. unintstalled NIS - yahoo mail attachements worked fine

2. reinstalled NIS - yahoo mail attachments worked fine

3. installed the add on pack - yahoo mail attachments worked fine

4. envoked the parental controls - the yahoo mail attachments DID NOT OPEN

5. adjusted the parental controls - to only block what I really wanted to (sex sites - because I got teenagers!!) - yahoo mail attachments worked fine!!!

So there you have it, for some reason one of the parental controls levers was blocking the attachments from opening in yahoo mail only. (still don't know why the parental control didn't block it in my other web based email account - but I don't care because it is now working fine and I don't have to investigate time and $$ in other security software)

Thanks bjm, and all who assisted. Have a good Saturday night.
