Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

I have three computers with Norton Internet security 2011. If you leave them powered up for days at a time at some point the Norton Internet security will not be running. If you then restart Norton internet security will give you an error code either 8504,101 0r 8401,101.

This has been going on for three weeks now. I have contacted tech support on each computer and then have uninstalled norton , run power erasure, removed registry entries , removed temp files and the problem still exists. Each time I go to tech support they try something else . The latest was lets run chkdsk. CHKDSK did not find any errors so they told me it fixed a configuration problem. I told the guy that if chkdsk does not find any errors they would not accept that .

Tech support does not have a clue why these errors are happening and keeps guessing on what will fix the problem.

While I understand how hard it is to have a software package run on millions of computers , having three computers with the same problem should alert tech support that there is a problem and get the software developers involved to find a solution.

So , where do I go from here ?

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

I don't have a solution or a suggestion but I'm experiencing the exact same behavior by NIS 2011 I've installed a few days ago.

The only improvement I see after the TS analyst worked on my PC is that now after reboot NIS 2011 disappears after less than an hour from the lower right tray.

Before that, rebooting (or restarting NIS) would generate the "Error: "8504,101" appears on my Norton 2011 product" message and the only way to get it going was to reinstall it. Originally NIS would run for several hours before vanishing.

None of the 3 PCs have any other anti virus software installed. All 3 had Panda Cloud (free version), AdAware and SpyBot previously which were all uninstalled prior to the NIS 2011 installation.
I'm using XP Pro v2002 SP3 and the 2 other PCs are running XP Media Center Edition v2002 SP2.

I have the same question as you...

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

lalexman Hi,

The quick answer is don't go anywhere.

Firstly, welcome to the community.

Secondly, I don't have the technical expertise to answer your problem, but I am sure that shortly someone will come to your aid and, if they are unable to solve the situation, it will reach the attention of one of the managers at Symantec, who will ask the Norton team to fix the issue.

Please be a little patient, especially as we are recovering from the holiday break and still at the weekend.

Cheers,

drshlomo.

Upgraded to v18.5.0.125 and unfortunately the problem persists.

Is there any information in your event viewers under system and/or applications?  Also, another user had a similar issue where he had mapped network drives, and a lot of compressed files.  It was causing a time out issue.  Is this anything like your system?

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

Update:

The "One step ..." support or patch (can't remember which) just downloaded something and asked me to also download and run the "20110103-001-i32.exe".

Let's see if this helps.

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

Didn't help.

NIS 2011 keeps vanishing after about 20 minutes.

Another tech. support session - removing software, cleaning up, reinstalling and same result. NIS 2011 v18.5.xxx dies after 20 minutes while v18.1.xxx after about 3hrs.

It is becoming frustrating.

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

Looking at this and other posts I'm beginning to see a pattern here: we all started having the same problem (error code 8504,101) about 4 to 6 weeks ago . . . Norton becomes unresponsive and unrecoverable using typical means, requiring a system reboot to restore operation . . .  then, at an arbitrary number of hours later, the problem re-occurs. In my case the "suggested" fix from Norton's One Click Support has been to download an re-install "definitions" (definitions of what I do not know).  Ultimately, this has had no positive effect.  My guess is that  we all automatically downloaded a program auto-update that has an organic glitch in it. Until Norton acknowledges that there's a problem with their code, and does a line-by-line forensic analysis of same (and issues an auto-download fix/update) we're all going to be stuck with this less than desirable situation. I've been a Norton user for more than 12 years now, and up until this most recent event have been generally satisfied. This level of non-functionality, especially in light of hours away from the computer while it's vulnerable to attack, is entirely unacceptable. Suddenly the MacAfee product line and even the embedded Microsoft firewall options are looking better and better.

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

Apparently I've fallen victim to the same problem here. However, I'm also having problems with Internet Explorer 8. I can only run Norton Internet Security and IE8 in safe mode without errors.

Any ideas?

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

I got the same 8504,101 "unexpected error has aoccured" after booting my Norton protected computer uponreturning from vacation. And they have the gaul to then charge me to fix it. Second time the computer has been highjacked in six months. And second time I have been charged!  (They could find nothing by the way.)

Seems the Norton hackers are beating the experts.

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

Exactly the same behavior on my Vista 32 PC. NIS 2011 runs sometimes and disappears at other times. This error code appears on boot with the tools looking for a solution to no avail. Contacting support results in a request for a fee "for virus removal" and no fix. I have been wrestling with this since early February. NORTON where are you???

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

I have the same problem also. I am getting error code 8504.101 and error code 11006.2 ( which one step support identifies as a definitions error and offers a new definition D/L. It didn't help. I'm using vista home premium 64 bit.  It's an intermittant problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling the product worked for about 2 or 3 hours and then it failed again. I'm getting really tired of watching that one stop support thing go round & round and just knowing that it ain't gonna' work!! HELP!!!!

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

lige Hi,

I can't remember seeing a problem such as this one ongoing for over 4 months without some of our volunteers trying to help, or a Symantec manager at least acknowledging the problem and promising to look for a solution.

I now ask that someone from Symantec join this thread and try to help those who require assistance, as I said would happen when I commented at the beginning of January 2011.

Cheers,

drshlomo.

Thank you very much, I also am amazed that no one has addressed this prolonged problem. I find it quite aggravating!!!

Luckily mine started working last night and it's continuing to work but obviously something needs attention.

lige Hi,

NIS 2012 Beta is taking up a lot of the attention of the Norton team but I am confident that someone will reply to you soon.

I, personally, will keep it in mind and keep prompting for assistance.

This is very unusual for Symantec; they're generally very prompt with their responses.

Cheers,

Re: Error 8401,101 and error 8504,101

First, I would like to thank everyone for posting about this, I didn't feel so alone and dumb while coping with this stupid error.

I have a vista machine and had the same symptoms after upgrading to 360 5.0.

Here's what finally worked.  I had so badly trashed my poor machine that I was getting errors running uninstall!  Had to call support for help.  This took me about an hour to get everything done.  I may be a little slower than the average bear with this stuff.

1) save off the product key  (you may have this in an email somewhere if you can't get it from the app)

2) download the removal software from Norton

3) back up your registry

4) remove EVERY folder entry in the registry that has norton, Symantec, or a combo of those names (there are a lot of these, more than you expect).  Use regedit to get the list.

5) run the removal tool

6) reboot

7) download and install 360 5.0

I've been up and working for 24 hours now, so I'm declaring success.

Yeah, it's nuts to have to do this, and the guys that write this ought to know everything they hit so that

1) it upgrades without intervention

2) removal tool removes every registry entry

but they apparently don't.

So, this is ugly, but it works.
