Ghost 10 not recognizing USB hard drive in system recovery

I've religously had ghost running for 3 years to my external hard drive.... and now the time has come to recover and the USB maxtor drive isn't being recognized even when I try to add it. My U3 sandisk shows up, but that doesn't have the data! I've been searching posts far and wide and have yet to see a way to handle this. Suggestions???

Is the Maxtor drive not appearing in the Symantec Recovery Disk, or somewhere else? Did you make a custom recovery disk, or just using the standard one? If you can provide any of the details of the backup job and how you were planning to recover this image, that would be very helpful. Thanks!

Re: Ghost 10 not recognizing USB hard drive in system recovery

Thanks for the follow up.

The maxtor and an iomega drive I have are both not recoginzied in the Symantec Recovery mode (either through the standard ghost disk or accessed through the hard drive on boot up). The d: back up partition on my harddrive was too small long ago for ghost, so I started useing my external hard drive as a back up source (the iomega and later the maxtor). The recovery disk is the standard Symantec cd. I went to restore the computer and the recovery program could not find the files or see the drives. It did recognize the SanDisk U3 memory stick that was plugged in, the cd emulation worked there.

How old is your USB hard drive? Older than Norton ghost 10?

The usb hard drive is new, Maxtor onetouch 4. I am not using the maxtor back up software.

Thanks!! Still really puzzled by this - have had to reinstall everything in the meanwhile. Not a ghost fan at the moment I'm afraid.

Re: Ghost 10 not recognizing USB hard drive in system recovery

Most likely, the Standard Symantec Recovery Disk from Norton Ghost 10 doesn't include the drivers for this drive. Since Norton Ghost 10 does not allow the creation of a custom Recovery Disk, follow these instructions:

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks!

Thanks, this is great information to have. Just wish I had been wise enough to "test drive" my configuration before it was in the critical path.

If you're looking for a faster solution, you can create your own custom Recovery Disk with Norton Ghost 14. There are also many great improvements to the product in Norton Ghost 14.
