It said some functions wont work because i am in safe mode. Norton started but it wouldn't scan anything. Hello bigrick18

Please tell us what Norton Product you have and what version. Also, we need to know what operating system and sp level. Thanks

Hi bigrick18,

I believe in the above post you are actually quoting passages from the section in the Norton Help file that explains the use of the Norton Firewall's Advanced Events Monitoring function.  If you are referring to the Windows Event Viewer it is normal to see errors and warnings, and most of these are non-serious events that are logged for the record.  Are you saying that events in the Windows Event Viewer are leading you to infer the actions that are mentioned in the Norton Help file article?   If you could post a screenshot or transcript of exactly what alerts you are seeing, that would be enormously helpful.

Hi bigrick18,

Were you able to restart the computer in normal mode?  Will Norton scan?  Or are things still not right?

Yea i can start my computer in normal mode and it will scan and is says no detection.     The error code that is notice said these things....

An attempt was made to register a security event source.

Subject :

                Security ID:                         SYSTEM

                Account Name:                 RICK-PC$

                Account Domain:                             WORKGROUP

Process Name:  C:\Windows\System32\VSSVC.exe

And then it says

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

Also, this doesn't make since because i can run norton in safe mode and regular mode but it wont scan anything in safe mode with networking. In addition Microsoft 2007 wont safe anything in safe mode. Does any of this make since to anyone. I would appreciate any advice thanks.

I guess this means that i don't have a virus?

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

Hi bigrick18,

A lot of stuff will not work in Safe mode so the events you see happening (or not happening) while in Safe mode are probably not the result of malware, which is itself also often disabled in Safe mode.  That is sort of the whole point of Safe mode - to only load the minimum number of things for Windows to run, and nothing else (even antivirus auto-protect).  It is strictly for troubleshooting, so it is not surprising that non-essential things like Help files and document saving are not available.  Norton  however, should scan in Safe mode, so that is unusual.  Is it offering the option to scan but failing to run, or are you not even being asked if you would like to run a scan?

You might want to download, update and run the FREE version (NOT the full paid version) of Malwarebytes' for a second opinion to see if it turns up any specific files that show signs of infection.  This should be done in Normal mode as well, as the scan engine in the product runs in a more limited capacity in Safe mode.

norton will run in safe mode but not i safe mode with networking, it also runs in normal mode. I downloaded malwarebytes along time ago so should i just scan it again, i did like 3 days ago and nothing came up

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

yes it scans but the numbers stays at zero. also in safe mode networking i try to connect norton with one click support and it tells me  that i need to unistall and reinstall norton because something is wrong but it only says that when i am in safe mode networking

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

If you are still suspicious and want to rule out malware it wouldn't hurt to run another Malwarebytes' scan.  Be sure to update the product first so you are scanning with the latest virus definitions set (and not the same set you used for the previous scan).  Otherwise, you could opt to do nothing further except observe your PC's behavior for a few days and look for any obvious outward signs that the computer is acting differently or strangely.

That is because the Norton product does not run in Safe mode at all.  So you will get errors if you try to use any feature (such as One Click Support) other than the scan.  When you scan in regular Safe mode (without Networking) does the scan run normally and not stay at zero?

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

yes and no.  i tried to run it in safe mode and it ran but stayed on 0 at first so i restarted it in regular mode and it scanned  so i restarted it in safe mode and it  scanned that time

i tried to run the malwarebets twice and both times it stopped and did not finish. i don't know why it stopped the first time but the second time it said commands    stop-out of space     or something like that.

bigrick18:

This seems to be an issue that has come up as far back as September.  When you run a scan in safe mode, do you use right click only to start the scan?

Avoid safe mode with networking because you are not protected when the internet connection is open.  Norton does not work other than a right-click scan.

When you installed Malwarebytes, did you choose the free version?  Try downloading it again, but use the save as and change the name to iexplore.exe.  After it is installed, go into the program folder and change the MBAM to iexplore.exe as well.  Update it and run a full scan in normal mode.

You have not said what other security software is running on your machine?  Have you got Spybot, DrWeb, or some other?

Hi bigrick18,

Prior to your monitor going blurry, had you noticed any other random PC glitches recently?  Freezes or shutdowns?  Video problems?  What were you doing on the computer when the monitor went blurry and the PC became unresponsive?

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

Sorry it took so long to respond. I do not have any other security system running just norton. Also before i download Malwarebytes again should i unistall the one i have on my computer.  Norton runs in safe mode okay now and normal mode but it shows nothing infected, but malwarebytes in safe mode shows nothing but in normal mode it always shuts down my computer before it finishes usually right in the middle. My question is shoud i unistall malewarebytes before i download it again or download it under a different name. Thanks

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

What happens when it "shuts down?"  Is it a blue screen, black screen, a reboot, or what?  Are there any error messages?  When you restart, did you check the log tab in MBAM to see if anything had been recorded?

it says something  like windows shut down unexpectidly or something and then it restarts. no logs are saved

What could cause malwarebytes from shutting down before it finishes?

Re: how can i detect if i have a virus on my computer but norton wont pick it up

Hard to say really.  Sometimes a hard drive will prevent scans from running if it is starting to wear out.  I've seen that a couple of times.  You could try running a different scan.  Before doing so, though, I would recommend that you save all of your documents and important data somewhare else. That way, if it is either the drive or an infection your data will be safe.

Let us know when you have your material saved, and then we can go from there.
