It is safe to open almost any email if you remember two important rules:
1. Do not open any attachments unless you know who they are from and you were expecting them.
2. Do not click on any links in the email unless you know the sender and are expecting the links.
In addition, for 100% security, if you are using Outlook, you can set your default email reader for text-only. You won't get to see the pretty graphics or hear the pretty sounds unless you give your permission, but this will protect you from embedded malware. Other email servers and organizers offer the same option.

I was just typing the same advice that mijcar has suggested; I would add one idea:
If you are going to get involved with selling online, I would advise creating a "throwaway" email account that you can use solely for that purpose.
If you are selling something and are using that email address,I would assume it's OK to open the emails otherwise you would lose sales.most people are legit when it comes to buying and selling it's only the small percentage who we hear a lot about that make it tricky. However if you use the suggestions and other sound advice found on these forums you should be OK! You have to learn in everything you do,I'm sure there is a lot of help about using "craigslist" most probably on the site itself under FAQs.
