Live Update: Operation Failed

I've been getting that message of Live Update: Operation failed every time I've tried to use Live Update for about the past week, and I don't know what to do to fix it? If anybody has any suggestions, they would really be appreciated?? Thank you very much, and have a great day, bye.

I'm using Norton 360 version 2.0

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Click Start> Run

In the Run dialogue box, type luall and then click OK.

This will initiate LiveUpdate.

Let us know the error message you receive

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Click on Help & Support / About and give us the full version number xx.xx.xx.xx

Without that basic information we can't help you.

When you have it please come abck to the Norton Internet Security Forum and post it there with the nature of the problem, not "the same" since this area is for Norton 360 whichis quite different.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

I suggest you to uninstall LiveUpdate from Add/Remove programs. Then you can reinstall LiveUpdate from LiveUpdate . If you are unable to see LiveUpdate in Add/Remove programs, you can directly install LiveUpdate from the link provided. This solution is applicable to NIS also.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

I have had this problem since I tried to install the N360 version 2 upgrade.  It uninstalls the version 1 which uses the LU*.* and must change it or remove it so the windows updates do not work?  May have to do a repair on my windows version to fix my problem.  Version 2 N360 would not load after it unloaded my version 1?

So at the moment I am Norton Less..........

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

I am having this same issue.. I have had over 6 and working on my seventh tech from Norton live chating and remote helping for the last 5.5 hours now and no one has been able to fix this problem for me...

I have watched them reboot my computer several times ... uninstall the programs and reinstall them over and over again only to have the same issue continue... I too have the error code 0x00000000 when trying to access that area.... I dont know what is happening that way... but I am very upset that I paid so much for a product that even thier own case managers and technicians do not know how to fix!

If you should know how any time soon how to fix this issue... Please let me know ASAP !!!!!

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

DanD9,

I am not sure whether you have followed these instructions to remove the damaged LiveUpdate files. Please check.

Temporarily turn off product protection
1. Start Norton 360.
2. Click Settings.
3. Under Quick Controls, uncheck Symprotect Tamper Protection .
4. Click Close.

Delete contents of LiveUpdate download folder
1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Symantec LiveUpdate.
3. Click Update Cache tab in LiveUpdate Configuration window.
4. Click Remove All Files From Cache.
5. Click Ok.

Delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files
1. Click the Start button and then click Search.
2. In the search box, type the following text:
    settings.liveupdate
3. Depending on your operating system, do one of the following:
      * For Windows Vista: Click Advanced Search and then check Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow). Make sure you select Location as Everywhere.
      * For Windows XP: Click More advanced options and then check Search hidden files and folders and Search Subfolders.
4. Click Search. Wait for the search to finish—it may take a minute or two to run.
5. Click the first item in the search results and then press Ctrl+A keys.
6. Press Delete, and then click Yes to confirm.
7. Close the Search Results window.

Run LiveUpdate. You can turn on the product protection after completing the LiveUpdate

1. Start Norton 360.
2. Click Settings.
3. Under Quick Controls, check Symprotect Tamper Protection .
4. Click Close.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

I spent the last 3 days ( all day mind you ) on live chat with Norton and having them do the remote fix thing on my comp. In the end they told me that they are aware of the problem and it should be fixed in 72 to 98 hours. That was yesterday when they told me that... so this is the link I was told to use every day until it is fixed on the Norton server... http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton360.nsf/docid/2008031503425275

They told me to do this every day at least once a day .. Even though it does not show up on the Norton interface that it has received the download.. they said it is in fact getting the information through this link above...

So as of right now... I am told it is an inside issue and they are aware of it...

I will say this... I was very pleased that they compensated me by adding A LOT OF EXTRA days to my account for having to wait for so long for this to fixed.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

OMG is it just me or does the live chat feel like it's more like a robot that you are chatting with?? I too have the same issue and the first time I used it to get rid of the problem, I got a "Jibin" helping me out. I knew at that point it wasn't even going to work out. Not that I'm being racist, but it seems to be that every time you chat, talk or whatever with a foreign call/chat center you don't get anywhere.

Anyhow, I got the answer of it's an issue going on with Norton and to try to redo the live update run after 24hrs. I just went on it again just now and I got a "Chantria" saying that it's an issue the Norton is aware of and if they could try some other sort of update. At that point i was not too comfortable since the previous person loaded something onto my computer that God knows what the heck it is! So hopefully I can check back and see if anyone was able to resolve the issue on it's own, either that or get some help and see how I can be able to do the update without having to get "operation failed" message.

Now my question is, will my computer be ok for now from any intrussions, viruses, etc??

Kudos0

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

I've had the same issues as described above and with the same results.

I do have one additional question though: someone briefly mentioned in their post Windows Updates - does anybody know if this problem with Norton is impacting any of the Windows Updates installing correctly?  I've had an issue with that since about Dec 9 and have 6 updates that keep failing.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Good morning everyone, I too have had all the problems each of you have had.  The one thing that seems to work is the link found in this forum to update virus definitions.

 http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton360.nsf/docid/2008031503425275

When run it shows virus updated to 12/17/2008.  I assume that means I am protected until norton gets this thing fixed.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

This may help you in future troubleshooting and what to look for.
I recently installed Norton 360 on two computers - both with Win XP Pro.
The first one went in clean.
The second one went in clean EXCEPT for Live Update.
If you need the how-to details, someone else will need to help - I no longer have the specific error message link I used.
This is from memory, but maybe it can help a couple of you. Here goes.

One of the error messages I kept getting when running Symantec Live Update in Norton 360 said:
- Go to control panel, and run Symantec Live Update.
- Make a couple of configuration changes, to show detailed error messages.
- Run the Live Update (It now showed the live update step by step like the NIS program I had before).
- Half of the updates were green (OK), have were red marked.
- Drill down and look at each one of the details.

- Instead of calling Symantec help at this point, I tried the following next
- You need to look at each one - because -
- ONE of them may say Live Update cannot download the updates - go to this error message to fix the LiveUpdate program.
- The link had me download an executable file from Norton, saved to desktop.
- Ran the link to fix or redownload Live UPdate. It did go in clean.
- Rebooted (may not have to)
- Tested live update both the long way (control panel) and from inside Norton 360 - both work fine now, no problem.
- Note - remember, I had 7 or 8 red x's to start with. The error problems were different. This one was the fix (root cause) that fixed all of them at once.

So if there is a Live Update problem, there may be a fix only to Live Update needed, not to uninstall and reinstall the full Norton 360.

Good luck.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Well my method seemed to work for the 1st day, and then it went back to the same bull****. I tried doing the configurations of the Symantec Live update, and what I get is an error message saying "The LiveUpdate control panel applet could not access LiveUpdate settings information. Errod Code 0x00000000"

At this point I feel like I bought the darn thing for nothing!

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

I've had this very issue for a month.  I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP1 and all updates installed.  I tried uninstalling my Norton 360 v2 (retail product), using the Norton Removal Tool, and reinstalling.  I am still getting Operation Failed with no further elaboration.

The luall method failed.  I went into the Support tab and IView said that "It seems that no LU 2.0 is running, or at least..." and the error message ends right there.

I have been able to use Intelligent Updater to keep my virus definitions up-to-date.  However, because I uninstalled and reinstalled, I am now only at version 2.2.0.2 of Norton 360 itself.  How can I get back up to v2.5.0.5 without LiveUpdate?

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Good Day, I too am having the same issus with the live update. I have Windows Vista 64 bit. From teh reding I have been doing I do not thisnk this is OS related. I am on Norton 360 v 2.5.0.5 and I have htis issue. I have removed from my machine 3 times, including the files and the registry entries. I have reinstalled and patched and still I get the LU1812 error running LUALL from the command line. I am running the updater manually.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton360.nsf/docid/2008031503425275

I have endured three support chat sesions, while the techs are helpfuul and well meaning... they are not able to resolve this issue. They follow the same notes I do... unintall ... reinstall. I wait 24 or 48 hours and the results are the same.

Good luck...

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

This LU 2.0 not running is a pain in the ***. I have done the 2 hr live link with support 3 times now and they do the same thing every time and they say to wait 24  to 48 a try it, LOL, what do you know its back. This better be returnable because it obvious that theres no fix.  It has also affected my windows updates but they dont want to fix or claim that it is caused by installing 360v2 even though this issue has never came up until i bought 360v2

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Tes this is affecting my windows updates and they dont want to believe is an issue caused by norton 360 after hours of there tech link sessions (3 total) with no positive results

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Hello bordour, Arapaho, et al.

I'm sorry to be late to this one. So far, we've been unable to reproduce this particular problem and the reporting we have on it is inadequate as the failure is occurring so early in the process as to prevent the files from getting written.

For this reason, we've build a special build of LU that will help us get logging enabled sooner so that we can properly identify the cause and get it resolved. If you are interested in helping us out, drop me a PM and I will provide you with instructions on what to do.

Thanks,

Matt

ArmandoAbarca28, thank you very much for the help unfortunately downloading and coping the new file into the Symantec directory did not work.  I followed the instructions, exactly but I think I know why it did not work.  I' am running 64 bit version of Windows Vista.  That of course is only a guess on my part but it is my only explanation.  I also have been very wrong on my guesses in the past so this may be no exception.  If you have any more idea’s or suggestions please let me know I would be more than happy to receive any new information or try any possible fix.

"LiveUpdate Engine COM Module has stopped working

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Hello all. I have been having the same problem with Liveupdate since mid. December 2008. I always get OPERATION FAILED. I contacted Norton then and was told a patch was on it's way. Since then I have contacted atleast 8 techs. They have deleted and reloaded, they have had me run Intelligent Updater and NOTHING has worked. I am always told they know about the problem and they are working on fixing the problem and a patch should be ready soon. Well, that has been going on a month now. Every tech tells me it will be released in a few days. I am very concerned about my computor because the virus definitions are outdated. I am ALWAYS told though that my computor IS protected so "no worries".  I see alot of views but wonder how many others are affected by this. What I am wondering about is, I have another laptop with Norton and the Liveupdate is working fine! I am using Vista 64 bit and I have Norton 360. Having had Norton for atleast 8 years, I am really disappointed in the current situation. I feel they should be working harder on getting this fixed and easing our minds. I mean they are supposed to be protecting us with the very best software. Where is it?

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Hello everyone.

You cannot connect to the live update because your system has been infected with a virus.

Packed Generic.200

I know because I have had this same issue for 3 months now and Norton support center could not even fix it.

I did find a free fix for it on the web and it worked like a charm.

Here are the two links for free scans and removals.

www download dot com /Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=buttonDownload this program and run the updates - do not run it yet. Then download this next program and get its updates as well - do not run it yet.

www superantispyware dot com

Restart your computer in safe mode and then run the first one as a quick scan. This first one found the "5 DNS Change" files on my computer and fixed it immediately.(use the free version)

Delete these files.
These are the files preventing you from running live update, windows defender, windows update etc.If this program does not find the poisoned DNS files then run the second one. It is free as well.Your computer should be up and running in no time flat. Thanks to some smart guy on Google for this information.Email me if you need more informationJohn

Ok, I am gonna speak honestly. I DEPEND on my Norton to protect my computer. I am not that computer literate and I am terrified to try "outside of Norton" fixes. *giggle* I have even considered deleting my Norton and going with another product. Has anyone tried to above fix that was offered and how did it work, except for the poster? Poster, I am NOT in any way shape or form implying your fix is not a real one. I am just afraid to screw something up on my computer. Seriously. When I read that we have a virus, that is causing this trouble, I get a sick feeling.

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Hello

Thanks for the update on what happened on your computer.

I have Norton Internet Security 2009. The information I provided was pulled from Google as there are many more people than us with this stupid problem. I am not sure if Norton 360 is the same as Internet Security 2009 or not. It just seems strange that the problems are the same. Not being able to live update. This virus caused my computer to not update anything... Windows, Defender, Could not sign into my google account etc. If anyone is having this same problem then it will be a sure bet that there is a virus in your computer. Mine was the Packed Generic.200 virus. These two programs removed this virus successfully. Hopefully it will fix others out there as well. For being  such a big corportion, it is sure disappointing to read from these forums the amount of times Symantec has used "Remote" on our computers to no avail. HELLOOOOOOOOOO - how many times do they have to try this and fail to realize that there is a common problem out there and a patch should be made available asap. Also, I found it strange that my Norton 2008 caused my computer to run really slow and not print wirelessly. I did not find this out until I installed 2009 and Wow, my computer runs fine again. Maybe Norton has had its day as the company is too big and complacent now. Maybe it is time to move onto another company that can meets the needs of its users and provide good customer service and not lip service. It is easier to send me an email than us this forum for anyone looking for more information.

Just my thoughts.

John

I'm not sure which post you want people to read -- it's a good idea to make a link using the Insert/Edit link icon on the toolbar. When you use this to make a link it is helpful to change the second box to read Open Link in a New Window and then people do not lose their place in the thread when they use the link.

I'd like to address your reference to  URL's and "restrictions on this forum":

I think what you ran into is a glitch in the Forum software that is definitely on the list to be fixed! If you got a message saying that the system had to do something because of invalid HTML etc then all you need to do is to click again on the POST button and it should go through.

I hope that helps you get your message across! <s>

Re: Live Update: Operation Failed

Hello All,

With the generous help of several folks here, we believe we have identified the primary cause of the "Operation Failed" error and a patch is now in work. I have no ETA currently, but I don't expect that it will be too long.

In the meantime, to preserve your threat protection, please continue to use Intelligent Updater to keep your definitions up-to-date. You can download IU from this location.

As to John's observation that this is threat related, we have not been able to confirm. We're continuing our investigation on that front but at this time do not believe that this is the primary cause.

Thanks,

Matt
