Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

Hello,

I am using Norton 360 V4 (fully updated) installed on Windows XP Home (fully updated).

I have a wireless printer installed (fully updated) and cannot connect to the local interface as you would do with a router.  The printer ip is 192.168.0.7  My current network settings are set to restricted, with the exception of the printer which is set to full trust.

If I disable the Smart Firewall completely, by right clicking on the icon at the bottom of the taskbar and then attempt to connect to the printer through the browser again, then it's successful; I have full access.

I'm confused.

I didn't have this problem with Windows Vista.  I could use Vista but I prefer XP :)

Re: Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

Hi The360,

Try setting the network trust level to "Shared."

Re: Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

Hi,

I can confirm this does allow access to the printer, but also other computers and devices.  However I would prefer a complete lockdown while still having full access to the printer.

Re: Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

Hi The360,

According to the documentation you should be able to configure a device to Full Trust on a Restricted network, and it should work.  However, yours is not the first report of problems being encountered in this configuration.  I think you would have better luck setting the network to Shared and then individually restricting other devices.  Otherwise, you could try purging the network and starting over to see if you can get your preferred arrangement to work.

Re: Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

Hi,

Yes I could set the default to shared but then the disadvantage is that any new devices that I'm not aware of are also set to shared and that means I have to keep checking the network.  I have purged the network as suggested, then hit refresh; still no joy :(

Is Symantec aware of this?  Perhaps this is something worth mentioning while they work on the next beta.

Edit recap: I do not have this problem with Windows Vista Home Premium.

Re: Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

It is the difference between XP and Vista/Win 7.  Networking is different with XP.  Microsoft made a lot of changes in Vista and Win 7 to make connections easier and more secure.  I suspect that Symantec will not be able to specifically design something to work around those differences and still maintain compatibility with the newer operating systems.

Oh.  That's bad :(

I guess there's nothing I can do about it then.

Why would Symantec even bother with XP now that all these new OS hypes exist.  Windows 8 anyone?

Thanks to all your replies.

Edit: Requesting permission to post a link in the beta forums for this topic.

Re: Norton 360 Blocking Full Trust Printer

UPDATE: I have found the problem.  There is an incompatibility with the NETGEAR WG111V2 wireless adapter and Norton 360 V4 when using Windows XP Home.  I know this because the other wireless adapter I'm using, the one built in my laptop - Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN works flawlessly.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!
