Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

Hi,

I Turned my computer on for the day.  I then did a Norton LiveUpdate and everything was fine; this was about three hours' ago.  I then Re-Started the computer and did a Full System Scan in Safe Mode.  I then Re-Started the computer in Normal Mode and did a Norton LiveUpdate; it said "Failed to Complete" for the "Check for Updates", but Downloaded and Installed Norton 2009 Web Protection Definitions and Norton 2009 Streaming Virus Definitions, and now, I am not longer getting Norton 2009 Streaming Virus Definitions, or any Updates now.  When I Clicked on the "More Info" button, it said that it couldn't Connect to Support and to check my Internet Connection; when I Clicked "Next", it informed me that Norton Internet Security could not help, and listed a list of Support Contact Numbers.  Is anyone else having this Issue?  Is there any Issues with the Servers?

- 16.7.2.11

Hi Floating_Red,

I think everyone is having this issue.  I just went through the exact experience you did, plus having the Symantec search function time out on me when I attempted to research the error.

Hey Floating_Red,

The LiveUpdate servers are down, and the Symantec website is not running properly, either. Just look at this thread (and other threads addressing the same problem are cropping up right now):

Yes, that appears to be the case since other customers are experiencing this Issue that cropped up when I was typing mine.

It's been a topsy-turvy week for us all...gäll? ;-)) (gäll: Swiss German for: isn't that so?)

In the meantime, even more threads complaining about the servers' outage are cropping up.

Just tested my own NIS 2007 product, ran LiveUpdate manually - can't connect to LiveUpdate. And I'm squatting here in Switzerland.

Wondered if they have tried a "full release" of the x.x.2.11 updates and it crashed the liveupdate servers??

Of course symantec is having problems - that is what happens when you've been promising updates for months, then announce the release, then cannot keep up with the demand.

-OR-

They released the "fix" again, and it crapped out AGAIN, so they shut down the server to prevent additional downloads of their betaware.

Aren't we all glad we paid for this experience?

I just turned my computers on for the first time today and found that neither could complete the check for updates phase of liveupdate. Glad to hear there isn't anything wrong on me end.

If this turns out to be another server related problem I think symantec owes us an explanation of what has been going on the past month or so. You may recall the problems with safeweb and insight. Though as floatingred said symantec may simply be updating their servers. They are going to need it once the 2010 products hit store shelves.

Re: Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

Same here. Yesterday I spent with Symantec support running my computer and telling me that I had the latest version of NIS 2009 installed and it read ver 16.1. or some such. Finally after letting me take back control I was able to download and install version 16.5 something or other. (I cannot remember strings of numbers so my math is shot!)

Now this "error" happens and I first got taken to a support page that allowed me to download a "fix" for this problem. It didn't.

So I'll sit and wait and see what happens as I take comfort in knowing I'm not alone.

Auto update should work when all is back to normal should it not?

Either way, it's never boring is it...............................

Yes; everything will be back to normal once this Server Issue has been sorted out.

You should also be getting Version 16.7.2.11 through Norton LiveUpdate soon.

Re: Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

Hi

I watched the cpu action and it says that the automatic liveupate worked and completed. The same thing with the pulse updates. However, when I look at the definition updates, that shows it was last updated at 3:11 PM EDT. So that is over 2 hours ago. I also tried a manual update and that says complete, but failed to check for all updates. Yet, the cpu part says it all completed. This is with the newest version of Antivirus 16.7.0.11, what ever the newest antivirus part was. As I mentioned in my other post after I got the new version. I thought it was very odd that I only got the newest engine part, but I still had the .10 branding and that mui folders for .10. One of the Symantec employees said that was ok, but to me it seems to be like I have 2 different versions of the product running at the same time. This is just a guess on my part, but perhaps, they are now trying to push out the other 2 parts of the .11 version that wasn't pushed out at least to me. I don't know if everyone got the complete package of the .11 version or if everyone got just the .11 engine like I did. To me, it sounds like having parts of 2 different versions of the same product would cause problems. When I mentioned that in my other thread, the Symantec employee never responded again. I got the updated version on Monday night, but didn't reboot until Tuesday morning, so the new one didn't start working till then. When I looked around in the Norton folder, I saw those different folders.

Re: Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

The response from support is that the live update issue is "actually a temporary error caused by certain changes that we are trying to integrate iwth the Norton product to enhance its performance and to make your computer more secure and up to date".

In other words the 16.7.2.11 update. Looks like Symantec has server issues.

The problem is that failure will then prevent regular definitions etc downloading. So the user is exposed for the next 48 hours.

What is worse (and nobody has mentioned this) is that Norton 360 users will not receive an error message but will report that all updates have been applied. In fact the definitions wont download for Norton 350 users either, although they may not spot this immediately.

This is something I have mentioned before between NIS cf. Norton 360 but there we are.

Sorry I should also say that I am in the UK and the problems seen are at least UK related.

Anyone unsure as to whether they have issues should inspect their log.lue file, search for ERR if there are none, then you are experiencing no issues.

The UK time is 11:59. I know the servers are working but I do not think that people appreciate that the reason is that the patch to 16.7.2.11 and 3.5.2.11 has been pulled yet again. That is why the servers and live update now works. Only users not already updated to 16.7 and 3.5 would see this.

Antivirus part of my System Works with 16.7.2.11 is updating again. Manual update worked also. Symantec site loaded up quickly too as did some pages of the site also. I guess it took about 3 1/2 hours to get them fixed. That's quicker than it took my DSL company to fix the problem in my CO last night so my town could get back online. Hope this won't stop my idle full system scan from running around 5 AM tomorrow morning. Between my DSL being down last night and then Symantec problems, I was beginning to think it was all this new patch affecting my DSL service too.

Re: Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

Floating Red

Sorry if I gave that impression, but being a NIS.NAV forum I tried to refer to NIS, but I did also mention Norton 360. The implication I guess is that the changes to Norton 2009 is affecting live update generally. I dont think the engineer meant to imply that the they are trying to make changes to non Norton 2009. He didnt actually say but clearly we are unaware of any such changes outside 16.7.2.11 and 3.5.2.11.

From the various posts, I am unaware of any user who was on any version less than say 16.7.2.11 and has been able to get the patch to 16.7.2.11 after the servers have come back up. There is evidence to suggest that Symantec has pulled the patches for the time being.

It appears that it is still Checking for Updates in some areas, like Intrusion Prevention, but is Failing to Complete to check for Updates on some areas, for example, Norton 2009 Streaming Virus Definitions.

Re: Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

Exactly, the hot fix that is on the Nortons website does not cover Version 16.7.2.10. It pertains to earlier versions of the Nortons Internet security program. Again I ask the question: Do I have to wait until Version 16.7.2.11 is distributed to my computer from Norton? Will this fix the problem? As I said, the program seems to be working fine and automatically downloads new updates and definitions every 5 or so minutes, however, when you try to run Live update "manually", sometimes it says that the check for updates is successful, but more often than not, it comes up with "failed to complete" on "check for updates" The funny thing is that even though it fails to complete, it still goes and looks for updates, and if it finds any it does download them successfully .... weird?

Yes, at this time you have to wait for Norton's to download the new version to you.
Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

This may be due to symantec Servers Problems.

Re: Norton LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" on "Check for Updates"

Hi,

Well my NIS 2009 has updated itself to version  16.7.2.11 but the problem still exists. Maybe it is a Symantec Server issue that is causing the problem ?? The program runs fine and updates itself through auto update (as proved with updating itself with the newer version) and even when I run "live update" manually and even though it says that its "failed to complete" when checking for updates", if the program does find any updates, it goes ahead, downloads and installs the update successfully. Maybe I should just leave this alone and let it go? Anyway, thought I would share this with you and would welcome any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks John
