Norton Toolbar Search Box - Can It be Removed or Hidden?

I'm using Norton Internet Security 2011. My browser already has multiple search boxes and is terribly cluttered. I only need one search box and I use Yahoo as a home page so the others aren't needed. I've already hidden the Windows Live search box (my OS is Win 7 and I'm using IE8). It would be really nice if I could hide the Norton Search Box without disabling the BHOs.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Re: Norton Toolbar Search Box - Can It be Removed or Hidden?

HI GreyStone2,

Welcome to the Norton Community. What version of NIS 2011 do you have? You can find this in Support > About. Is your Windows 7 32 or 64 bit?

I don't know if this is technically supported but you can disable the Norton toolbar. Go to IE Tools > Manage Add-Ons. Find the Norton toolbar entry, highlight it and click Disable. You wil be prompted with a pop up dialog with NCO BHO also selected for being disabled. You can clear the checkmark on that box and click Disable.

Given that NCO BHO is automatically selected for also being disabled I do not know if this is supported but it does appear to work and safe web indications still show up correctly on Google searches and such.

Alternatively you can also click the X on the far left side of the Norton toolbar.

It should be noted that you can still launch safe web searches from the main NIS user interface window.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Hi GreyStone2,

If you just want to get rid of the Norton Safe Search box, but wish to keep the rest of the toolbar, click the "Norton" button at the left side of the toolbar and click "Disable Norton Safe Search" in the dropdown list.

I think the OP wanted the entire toolbar gone. Disabling safe search by itself still leaves the toolbar.

I'm guessing this since it sounds like the OP wants to save real-estate in the browser. Just disabling safe search does not really save real-estate room since the entire horizontal line is still taken up by a Norton toolbar.

But only the OP knows for sure.

Ignore this -- on rereading I see I was posting what Allen said but that I misunderstood.

It does what I want and leaves the ratings on the search results but removes the whole bar.

Thanks Allen!  Worked like a charm and accomplished exactly what I wanted to achieve. FYI - using Win 7 64 bit. Also, I confirmed that clearing the check-mark leaves the NCO BHO functional.
