PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

After installing NIS 09 this morning, I alway get an error message, "A necessary file could not be loaded: PIF:AlertEng.dll" whenever I start up my computer.  The same error page recomends downloading and running file 1002,1 to correct this error.  I did both, but the error still shows up on boot.  Otherwise, NIS 09 runs without problems.  How can I get rid of the error message?  Thanks.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi jako,

I'm sorry to learn about the error. I believe that this indicates a problem with LiveUpdate Notice, which is our mechanism for alerting you to the availability of upgrades for your product. I think the best place to start is to download and reinstall LiveUpdate Notice.

Let us know how that goes.

Thanks for replying.

I downloaded and tried to install the LiveUpDate notice, but always get an Installation Failed notice.  Anything else I can do to correct my problem?

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi jako,

I received some additional information that I was not aware in my previous response. LiveUpdate Notice (LUN) is now integrated with the Norton 2009 products, so there may have been some problem with the overinstall. There is no graceful way to remove just  LUN in this situation. At this point, I'd recommend using Add/Remove programs to uninstall 2009, download and run the Norton Removal Tool to get out the remains of LUN, then reinstall 2009.

Please let us know how it goes.

Matt, thanks for your support.  I did what you recommended and also installed NSW Basic first, then NIS 09.  Everything is working correctly now.  Thanks again.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

I get the same message and have followed all the suggested solution and non have worked. The message remains. Installed and uninstalled 3 times, used the Norton Removal Tool, etc. Nothing can get rid of this message. Is this a program bug under Windows Vista?

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi Startestor,

I don't think it is a Vista problem specifically. If the solution didn't work, I'd actually recommend contacting support so that they can manually remove it. Use this link and select your region for the support options available for you:

Sorry we couldn't help here.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hello,

After downloading and double clicking the luninst.exe file, I get a message that it will take 1-3 minutes to complete LiveUpdate Notice installation.  I click okay.  Then I get a message that the installation failed

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi,

I am new to this board. I too have the alerteng.dll problem after installing NIS09. I spent 2hours with a Norton tech last night and there is no change. He actually said "it is working fine all you need to do is click on the message and then continue working".

He did say that LU will have a fix in by next week. He guaranteed it. I am not sure how he can guarantee it.

He said my problem had to do with having Norton Ghost from Systemworks premier 2005 installed. For the message to go away I needed to uninstall Ghost 9.0.

It doesn't make sense that once you purchase a product then for it to work you have to uninstall another product.

Any other suggestions on getting rid of alerteng.dll without uninstalling apps?

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Did you try running the fix tool in the document PIF:AlertEng.dll ?

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Navigate to the entry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run in registry. Remove the entry PIF:AlertEng.dll.

Restart the computer.

If this does not work, download and run Norton Removal tool. Then delete the all the Symantec entries from your computer, especially if there is a folder by the name Symantec Shared.

Reinstall 09 version. This should resolve the issue.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Thanks for the suggestion. I am concerned if I remove other Norton products such as Ghost 9.0 or GoBack I will not have the protection I need.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

I just tried the deletion strategy and the stubborn sucker is still back. I would try the other strategy however as I mentioned earlier I am nervous about losing Ghost and GoBack.

Any thoughts?

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi

I have the same problem. I presume this is the Windows Registry where you delete the reference to this dll?

Thanks,

Ron

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

I hope you can install the Norton Ghost or Goback after running NRT and reinstalling the 09 version. Do you have the order details to reinstall the Goback or Ghost? Sorry for the delay in responding to this thread.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi Vineeth,

Thanks for responding. I have all the disks and keys. My concern is if I uninstall I Ghost, Goback, Systemworks 2005, and NIS09 and then reinstall NIS09 and would I safely be able to restore the other apps on top of NIS without creating another error?

Hi Martin,

I suggest you to install NIS 09 first and then install the other products. Let's see how it works.

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

I have been living with this error since Symantec can't seem to correct it. I have NIS 2009, NSW 2008, and Ghost 14. The error message at boot means nothing and can be ignored. It hardly seems worth the time to remove all the products and reinstall them.  I'd sure hate to go to all that work and have the error still be there!  Just my two cents worth

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

I just noticed something interesting.  I don't have a registry entry for PIF:AlertEng.dll.  But I get the error on just one of my machines running NSW 2008.  That machine has "LiveUpdate Notice" installed on it ... the others do not!  So I think "LiveUpdate Notice" is the problem .. not the registry setting for PIF:AlertEng.dll. And I cannot remove the program in Add/Remove Programs!!

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Hi Vineeth,

Do I run the removal tool first or do I first delete from the control panel and then run the removal tool.

What is the sequence or do I just use the removal tool and all is gone?

Also, as you may be gathering this is a lot of work to remove about 4 apps to get rid of this message. The tech I worked with the other night said that there would be a patch by next Saturday. He guaranteed it. Do you know if this is true or was he just trying to get rid of me?

Thanks again

Re: PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

I am new too.  I recently upgraded Norton Internet Security 2008 with NIS 2009 that I installed from the CD I ordered.  Installation was successful and I activated the product.  When I restarted my computer I, too, begin getting the PIF:AlertEng.dll error message.  I downloaded the suggested fix, which, of course, didn't do anything.  I found this discussion thread and (thankfully) learned I was not alone.  I presently have no desire to go through the Norton Removal Tool routine unless absolutely necessary.  Since the error message occurs at boot-up, I went to System Configuration Utility (XP MCE 2005) and looked at the start-up tab.  Found a "Symantec User Session" item (...ccapp.exe) and disabled it.  (ccapp.exe is in "program files\common files\symantec" folder.) No more PIF:AlertEng.dll error message at boot-up;  all status indicators for NIS 2009 says it is working perfectly.  (I run Norton Ghost 10.0 and it seems to work as usual.)  I am not sure I did the right thing by disabling ccaps.exe but am guessing it pertained to my earlier versions of Norton Internet Securtiy 2006, 2007, and 2008.  Any thoughts about I have done?
