Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Been trying for two days to update the virus definitions.  Haven't been on this laptop for 23 days.  360 v.3, windows XP.

I've tried both FTP and the other link from the support link.  About 3% update will download then it is if it can't load anymore.

I won't  use this lap top because the virus def. are so out of date!  This is a little ridiculous.

I've run the disk cleanup and defragmenter.  I have plenty of memory.  I'm using wild blue satellite DSL and the signal is excellent.

HELP!!!

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I just update my definitions without a problem.

Are you running any other security type prog's ?

Also, have you tried running 'Malwarebytes, just in case you have any malware ?

Link below.

Download the free version, install, update, then do a full scan.

Hi poppy123

You could also check your system clock to make sure that is correct, month, date and year and the correct time zone too. Please also check to see if you have all your windows updates also.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I've not had difficulty updating in a long time.  This laptop sat unused for 23 days is the only factor that's different.  I've always been diligent to live update, disk clean, and defrag.  I'll try the malware.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I don't think you mentioned what the SP number is on your XP  laptop.

i.e. 2  or  3.

I would go for sp3 if you haven't already got it .

Have you got Windows set for Automatic Updates ?

As you haven't used your laptop for so long, have you done a manual 'Windows Update' since you started it up again.

There's been a few updates in the last few weeks, some which could need updating manually.

Have you got a little yellow 'Shield' Icon on your taskbar.

And I think there is a version update coming out for N360.

The release is being controlled, so you might, or might not, get it yet.

You will most likely have to do a manual 'Run LiveUpdate' from the bottom of your Norton window to get it, and then do a 'Restart'.

Click 'Help & Support' on your norton window, and then About, to see what version you have got.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Windows Auto update keeps it updated. System clock is correct. After about an hour the one-click update checking of my Norton 360 came back to say the internet connection was not good! Something seems to be wrong with connecting the server.?...

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I didn't think SP3 came as an Auto Update, but never mind, as long as you've got it.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I'm using Norton 360 v 3.5.2.1.1;  Windows XP  SP3;   Automatic update is on.

I'v manually updated wWindows.

With Norton LiveUpdate it will run a little whild and say  it is downloading updates.  Then, it always comes back with something like "unable to load all the updates"  so I keep doing that.  So, Im thinking something is wrong.

I've tried to download the Malware bytes but, now that I think of it, everything I try to download will download about 3 % then it will seem to "hang up" and acts like it won't download anymore.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Hi poppy

Please see if you can download malwarebytes from this site instead.

Download the free version, install and update then run a FULL scan. After the scan completes you should post the logs back to this thread.

You can find Malwarebytes here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

It is a safer location to get the program from than malwarebytes themselves because the malware writers some times block the security programs' websites.

When you first started up your computer after not using it in a long time, did you try rebooting your modem and router and then start up your computer again so that you can get a  new ip and a fresh connection.

What happens if you open up another User Account, using a completely different name, give it Administrator Rights.

Then reboot and logon to that user.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

After three tries it finally downloaded Malwarebytes.  The log is attached.

Yes, I did reboot the modem and router and have restarted several times.

The Malwarebytes found two infected objects.  This is the first time, other than a manual liveupdate I just did, since the scan.

I'm a novice, so, how do I log on as another user?

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Hi poppy

Your malwarebytes log shows a problem with notepad.exe and I think maybe regedit also. I'm wondering if this could be a problem with your windows installatoin or maybe hinting at something like a rootkit perhaps. Did you download Malwarebytes from the site I posted before?

To add a user account in XP go to Start>settings>control panel>user accounts>create account.

You say you have a modem and a router.  How is that configured? Incoming wire to modem and then to router? Or incoming wire to router and then to modem?

Are you connected wirelessly or wired on the machine you are having difficulty with?  What kind of router and modem are they?

Was N360 3 installed over top of another version, or product, or was it a clean installation?

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I downloaded Malwarebytes from the link you provided.

I've been trying to get this laptop to lownload virus definitions for at least 3 days.

I'm currently download another anti virus program to replace this Norton 360.  I don't have the time to try to get N 360 to do what I think it should have done on its own anyway.  I've got c. a month left on this subscription and then I think I will uninstall it off my other two PCs too.  What a waste of such a well publicized anti virus program as N 360.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Hi poppy123

I don't think the problem is with your N360. Your log from Malwarebytes showed problems, but you didn't have the program fix them. Malware can and does interfere with any security program you do run.  It's your choice though if you want to use another security program and install it on a computer that isn't clean.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I'm connected wirelessly with this laptop (TOSHIBA PORTEGE).  The modem is a Wildblue Satallite modem.  I'm using a Belkin_N_Wireless 88CF65 .  Right now it's at 87.0 Mbps.

As far as I know the N360 was a clean install.   This latop has been operating just fine until I let it sit unused for 23 days, and therefore the current problem updating virus

 definitions.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Hi poppy

You had problems trying to download malwarebytes and you are having problems getting antivirus updates. Your malwarebytes log showed problems, but the last log you posted, the problems weren't fixed. Both of these problems could be indicative of a malware problem, especially since the malwarebytes log wasn't clean either.

See if you can download and install and update another on demand scanner. Then do a full scan with that program and post the log here after it fixes what it finds. Thank you.

Here is a free on demand antimalware scanner. It is safe to use on demand with your Norton product.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Did you try turning off the Smart Firewall and then run LiveUpdate?

If not, try that and let us know the results. If the problem persists, note down the exact error message and post it.

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

I didn't see any "fix" button.  That's why I didn't fix them.  After your last message I went back but I guess they were already removed.

I know just enough about this stuff to get myself into trouble!  I really appreciate the help from all of you.

I'm on my PC now.  All N360 seems to be working okay.

I stayed up late last night trying to download help but to no avail.  I uninstalled all of the Google and Chrome programs thinking the open source might have contributed.  But that didn't free up anything.

It's as if something is preventing a full download.  The downloads begin okay but never finish.

I'll go to the superanytispyware link and try that.

Thanks

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Live Update has been coming on all along.  Hs, then owever, it checks for updates, downloads, then after a few - 15 or so seconds of downloading gives one of the following: "Not all of the updates were successful", "Not all of the updates were successful", "Failed to check for some updates",    It keeps saying Definitions Update 27 days (as of today) ago.  It never changes during the day regardless of how many update times I've run it for the last four days.(says last definitions update 12/31/2009.

I guess all I can do is keep running manually the Live update, but when do I give up?

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Yes I turned off the firewall.  Don't know if it made any difference or not. Thanks.

Just a thought

As you having trouble downloading.

Have you, or can you, tried another wireless adapter, or perhaps tried  connecting to your modem or router by cable ?

Re: Updating virus definitions - will not update!

Hi poppy

How much time do you have left on your subscription of N360? It's odd that it stopped working on 12/31/09. It's almost as if there is a problem having to do with the time synchronization. I'm wondering if there is some sort of problem with the Cmos battery, but I guess with a laptop that is kind of hard to check out. How old is your laptop? It isn't running on battery backup is it? Could there be something wrong with the battery perhaps?
