Setup new computer

Hello Community,

So, the neighbors asks me over to help setup his new Win7 machine.  Supposed to be a new machine.... ?

The trial Norton product is NIS09.  Is trial NIS09 really installed or is it just advert link to Symantec site for current version.

Anyway, If I activate NIS09.  Will I really get NIS09. Will I have to provide credit card info.  How does a supposedly new machine have trial NIS09 ?

Ancillary/bloatware software install dates are from Nov 09.   Seems odd that a major retailer would have stock on hand this old.

Open to suggestions.  Activate NIS09 just to have some protection while I run Win Updates etc.  or

Uninstall NIS09 via control panel & NRT and pull trial of NIS11.  Will I have to provide credit card info for Norton trial.

Thanks

Re: Setup new computer

Hello bjm_

I would activate the NIS 2009 and then have the neighbor get a cheaper boxed version of NIS 2010 or 2011 and then use that key to update to NIS 2011. When he gets the newer NIS 2010 or NIS 2011, then uninstall the trial of NIS 2009 using control panel and reboot and then installl NIS 2011.

and run live update.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Re: Setup new computer

you could download this to another pc and copy the files on a usb-stick.

15 day trial http://www.norton.com/nis11

Download the latest definitions for manual update and try to install them.

If you have a 64 bit sytem, you need the 64 bit definitions!

Activation nis 2011 needs a norton account (you have to provide a email adress but it's free), no credit card info needed.

On activation screen select "buy later"!

Re: Setup new computer

Hello flo

Thanks for your interest... I like your comments.  Seems reasonable.  Again, as I do not recall.  Will I need credit card info for vendor installed trials.   Also, from NIS09 to NIS11 is control panel uninstall sufficient ?

No need for NRT unless I run into problem ?  Yes/No ?

Oh, one more Q if I may.  As I'm not familiar with Win7 as yet.  What do I do with Win Defender which appears active by default.

Thanks

Re: Setup new computer

Win defender is not the best free Antispy program it  has a real time component too!

I would disable the real time component!

Aha!  So, the 30 day trials require credit card info ...but, 15 day is just "buy later"

Your link http://www.norton.com/nis11  looks like normal 18.5 dl.  What identifies as 15 day trial?

Re: Setup new computer

bjm_,

this is the ESD = Electronic Software Distribution version.

It's not really a trial version but you have 15 days to activate it (if you have already a key) or to buy a key.

Yes, I know.  I have Win Def turned off on my Vista machine.

I was surprised that Win Def was default enabled on Win7.

Thought I read Win Def was default disabled on Win7.

Aha!  Thanks so much.  I'm not familiar with trials. Truth be told.  I just don't remember the finer points.

Thanks.... for the refresher.

Re: Setup new computer

Hello bjm

The uninstall using the contol panel method should be sufficient.  NIS 2011 is made to uninstall the prior year's product. If you find that there is any sort of problem with NIS 2011, then you could always uninstall it and use the NRT if it is necessary..

@ Topic

Thanks for your interest and information.

I'll discuss options with my neighbor and cobble together a solution.

Thanks again
