Norton 360 v5 Error 8504,104 since .Net update

Ever since applying latest Windows Updates for Microsoft .Net Framework 4 (on Win 7 Pro) yesterday, Norton 360  fails with Error code 8504,104 or 8504,5.

Have tried NPE and uninstall/ reinstall of Norton 360 V5 more than once but no change.

Please try to remove the program with the Norton Removal Tool, and then reinstall it.
Here are the steps:

2. Download latest Norton 360 installer:
- www.norton.com/n360s_5 Standard with 2GB Online Storage

- www.norton.com/n360sne_5 Standard Netbook Edition with 2GB Online Storage
- www.norton.com/n360pne_5 Premier Netbook Edition with 25GB Online Storage
- for other languages than English please go to the Norton Update Center: www.norton.com/nuc
3. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt
4. Disconnect from internet
5. Remove the old Norton 360 version from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
6. Reboot
7. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times)
8. Install Norton 360 version 5 with the downloaded installer
9. Reconnect to the internet
10. Activate Norton 360 version 5 with the same key you have for the older version
11. Run Live Update until you get no new updates
12. Restore your Identity Safe data (Settings ->Identity Protection -> Restore)

You can check how the Norton Removal Tool works in this video.

Re: Norton 360 v5 Error 8504,104 since .Net update

Dear PapauZ,

Thank you very much for your ongoing help.

Before receiving your last e-mail, I spat the dummy in frustration and decided to do a clean reinstall of Win 7 (Pro - 64 bit) as I was not only unable to run N360 but also my Quicken Personal Plus financial software (from Intuit/ Reckon). (It refused to recognise an uninstall in order to do a reinstall in spite of using a similar tool to NRT and my subsequent  hacking into the Registry to try and remove the offending entry).

Initially all went well, I installed Win7, Office 2007 and let Microsoft update download about 100 updates while I went to bed. Next morning (Sunday) I rebooted and let MS update download another batch of updates while I walked the dog.

My troubles began after those updates:

I reinstalled my Quicken software from the CD. The package came with 4 apps - Quicken itself plus an MS Money data converter, Hubb Investment Services and a desktop BillMinder gadget. I attempted to activate Quicken on-line (similar to N360) but got an error message saying I needed to contact Reckon's tech support - who weren't open on a Sunday.

So then I downloaded and installed Norton 360s V5. It ran beautifully and I even restored my identity safe data successfully.

But when I came to Activate Norton 360 I couldn't find the paper with my product key. So - I went to log into my Norton Account to retrieve the key. No response from either IE9 or Chrome. It appeard all my apps had lost connectivity to the internet. Even Outlook mail had stopped working. Diagnostics said my ethernet connection from modem to PC was normal even though I couldn't even log into the modem on 10.1.1.1.

In desperation I used Win7 System Restore to roll back to the 4th last restore point. This removed all of Quicken's secondary apps, some recent Windows updates and N360. Happily though, the rollback restored my internet connectivity. When I checked my mail I found your last post.

I am going to try and reinstall N360 again, this time following your advice to disconnect my modem conection while installing.

I wanted to let you know just in case my comms go pear-shaped again following the install. Also when Quicken support opens, I will try to activate that software.

Re: Norton 360 v5 Error 8504,104 since .Net update

Just to say that I reinstalled N360 V5 and again lost my internet connection.

When I uninstalled N360 v5 the internet connection came back.

For good measure I tried installing N360 V3 from my CD and the same thing happened.

Re: Norton 360 v5 Error 8504,104 since .Net update

These sounds to me like a driver compatibility issue....

I would suggest to check out the network card's driver. Maybe there's a newer one on the manufacturer's site, and installing it would solve the issue.

Re: Norton 360 v5 Error 8504,104 since .Net update

I finally managed to get Norton 360 V5 running Apparently Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) had installed itself on my PC in the background during my re-intallation of Win 7 and I hadn't noticed.

After uninstalling MSE, I was able to install & activate Norton 360 V5 with no problems to  my internet connection.

Thank you for all your help.
