iTunes not enabled in Windows Firewall (even when Firewall is disabled)

I am trying to troubleshoot a problem where access to iTunes Store is being blocked. (no error message - page simply will not load)

I have re-installed iTunes, checked all IE settings, etc.

I suspect my firewall is blocking access to iTunes store

I am running Norton 360 and Windows 7

I have selected "allow" for all Apple programs including iTunes

I disable the smart firewall in Norton 360 and run iTunes diagnostic.  The results indicate:

Firewall Information

Windows Firewall is on.

iTunes is NOT enabled in Windows Firewall.

When I look at Windows Firewall it says these settings are being managed by vendor Norton 360 -

How could Windows firewall remain on when Norton is disabled?

Very frustrating - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: iTunes not enabled in Windows Firewall (even when Firewall is disabled)

Hi tbtesta,

Windows 7 disables the Windows firewall, but keeps the service running.  As long as a third-party firewall is installed, the Windows firewall cannot be used.  The Norton Smart Firewall should automatically set permissions for iTunes to connect, so it is rare that this would be an issue.  Please consult the following iTunes troubleshooting guides for a possible solution:

Thank you for forwarding these links, however, I have tried many of the suggestions in these articles before posting here.

As part of the trouble shooting I am trying to isolate cause of problem

If I disable Smart Firewall in Norton 360 for 15 minutes - is it possible the Windows Firewall somehow remains enabled - I don't understand why the iTunes diagnostic would continue to indicate "Windows Firwall is on"

Perhaps it is referring to the service.  The Automatic Program Control in the Norton Firewall does not block legitimate programs like iTunes.  I would be very surprised if this was a firewall issue.  You can use the Firewall Reset option in the Advanced Settings to revert the firewall to its defaults so that any misconfigurations that might be causing a problem will be removed.

Re: iTunes not enabled in Windows Firewall (even when Firewall is disabled)

i am having the EXACT same problem.  i have been trying to chase down why my windows 7 w norton 360 (fully updated) itunes will not home share.  after literally moths of reading posts, talking to apple, competely redoing my home network i got to this exact same place.  had homeshare up for about 8 hours, then all the sudden itunes store connection kept timing out.  ran diagnostics, only issue was that windows firewall "itunes not enabled"  except norton turns off windows firewall, and like the originating poster, i have everything in norton set to allow for itunes.  what the heck?  its the only thing stopping my homeshare from working.  what is this bizarre issue?>?>??

Re: iTunes not enabled in Windows Firewall (even when Firewall is disabled)

My problem was solved through a newly released update of iTunes.  I was running a parent control program - SafeEyes which although disabled was interfering with iTunes. Of course the SafeEyes technical support blamed the problem on Apple (and the problem was fixed with the iTunes update)
