Norton Identity Protection causing Chrome to load pages slowly or not at all

I recently refreshed my Windows 7 (32-bit) laptop and reinstalled Chrome and Norton 360.  I have all of the latest updates for all products.  I've noticed that Chrome has been loading pages either very slowly or not at all.  However, if you run in "incognito" mode, pages load without issue.  Once I disabled the Norton Identity Protection extension, the problems went away.

Now I did not have these issues before, and I have a desktop running Win 7 (64-bit) that does not have these issues.

Installed: Norton 360 v 6.3.0.14 (new tonight with Norton repair and reinstall)

Norton Identity Protection 2012.5.5.11

Google Chrome 21.0.1180.79 m

I've seen other posts regarding this issue on both Norton and Google Chrome message boards.  So I'm not sure which side has the issue.

Re: Norton Identity Protection causing Chrome to load pages slowly or not at all

Hi bellbd,

I am not a Chrome user, so I do not know what "icognito mode" does, but basic Norton 360 knowledge tells me that in some case where running the Norton Remove and Reinstlall Tool (RnRT) does not correct the problem a more thorough cleanup of the previous  install is required.  I would suggest you try a clean install of N 360 - as outlined below:

If you use Identity Safe for your Logins, please back it up (export) the data so it can be Restored (Imported) after you install a fresh copy of N 360.

Please remove the copy of N 360 you have installed, using the Control Panel via Programs & Features.  Select the second option - remove all my settings.  Note this will remove any customized settings you may have (including firewall rules)

Download and run the Norton Remvoal Tool and reboot after it is completed. The NRT can be found here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us&lg=english&ct=united+states&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home&entsrc=redirect_pubweb

Download a fresh copy of you product and install:

www.norton.com/n360s_6 (Standard Edition)

or

www.norton.com/n360p_6 (Premiere Edition)

Once installation is complete, open N 360 and manually Run LiveUpdate as many times as necessary for it to respond "no more updates found". If a reboot is requested, reboot and then continue to Run LiveUpdate until it responds "no more updates found" and then reboot one last time.

Once totally updated, don't forget to Restore/Import your ID Safe data.

Please keep us posted.

Re: Norton Identity Protection causing Chrome to load pages slowly or not at all

Hi,

I am also having a similar issue and I will try to make the explanation make sense.

I am using Chrome 21.0.1180.79 m with Windows 7 32bit Version 6.1 (build 7601 service pack 1), Norton 360 Premier 6.3.0.14.

When loading websites they are not being displayed 100% because the displaying of the tab feezes before fully displaying the webpage 100%. Trying to click on something, enter information into or scrool down the webpages can not be done. Please note, I said "Displaying" the webpage because the webpage has loaded and is functioning behind the frozen tab.

If I switch to a different tab and back to the original tab or if I minimize and maximize crhome, the webpage is displayed correctly. Anything that I have typed in is displayed and if I had tried to scrool down the frozen tab before switching off of and back onto it, the page is scrolled down.

I disabled the Norton Internet Security plugin and I have not had any issues. I am guessing there is a conflict between Chrome and the NIS plugin.

This exact same problem has occurred on another laptop I have. I also just did a clean install on a 3rd computer and the same scenario occurs on that one as well. These other 2 computers are using the same version of windows 7, Norton 360 and chrome.

Thanks,

Bill.. .. .

Re: Norton Identity Protection causing Chrome to load pages slowly or not at all

It's not limited to Chrome. I get crashes with IE9 if Identity Protection is enabled.

I only just discovered this since normally I disable the Toolbar and IP and only enable Vulnerability Protection in order to get the SafeWebflags but I was troubleshooting in another thread and I find this goes back a long way ...

Has anyone had success resolving this issue? Thanks.

Norton is working on a fix for the Internet Protection problem and have said that it will come down through LiveUpdate when it is ready.

I'm glad there's a fix coming - this had begun to really frustrate me.  Some research later and checking with Chrome diagnostics pointed the finger firmly at Norton Identity.  Currently I'm running IE9 and Chrome whereas I'd really prefer to just run Chrome.

How does disabling the NIP extension in Chrome affect security? Is this a safe thing to do? Thanks.

Hi gbwright1,

See this post here, then look at this article on the protection from Phishing and Fraudulent Web Sites that the extension gives.

Which is one of the reasons we've all bought NIS and not just a simple anti-virus package.  BUT the conflict between Chrome and NIS is a real pain.  Symantec need to urgently solve this problem.

Using IE is a workaround, but general IMHO opinion Chrome is better and preferable, so come on Symantec, we need a fix here urgently.

Concerning the Chrome browser which I use also. Norton has been working on a fix since last year, but it's Google who keeps dragging their feet on this. I am not talking about the current crashes happening in IE and Firefox since the latest update to 19.8, per the many threads started on that newer issue. I'm speaking of the Chrome browser only, per this thread. See this POST, and the corresponding link to the bug report submitted by Symantec to Google, in which Google is ignoring.

Hi Ed,

I'd also found that link this morning.  I fear Google have become bloated with their own success and do things as and when they want - least ways that has been my experience on Android issues...

Re: Norton Identity Protection causing Chrome to load pages slowly or not at all

Just to add to the chorus, I have same problem with Chrome and Norton Identity Protection.  I have taken to keeping NIP
extension in Chrome disabled unless I need help remembering a login/password.  Then I enable it until the page load problems start again and go back and disable it.

A pain.  May finally be the last straw with me and Norton.. expensive, resource hungry (tho not as bad as it used to be), and causes various conflicts like the one being discussed here.  I use a freebie antivirus on some other computers I own and have had zero problems.

NIP caused me video loading problems in Chrome.  I found that minimizing or collapsing the screen down to the taskbar and then restoring it to max. allowed the video to run.  May not work for your problem, but may be a work around for some until Symatic gets a fix.

Same problem with Norton Identity Protection and Chrome.  I have struggled with Norton for many years but have kept it for features like Identity Protection... if only they would work without torturing the user with conflicts.     I agree that Norton used to be a resource hog and now is just a conflict source.  But life is too short to wait more years for Norton features to actually become useable.  I have had no problems with free AV programs on other computers...

Norton forums tend to be commiseration sessions where everyone agrees they have the same problem and absolutely nothing ever happens to provide a fix.  This one is a prime example, and for me too, this issue is my "last straw" with Norton.  Hasta la vista, baby.

I'm having this problem also buy have it using IE8. If I disable it as a IE8 "Add On" the problem seems to go away.

I am having the same issue.  Will there be a fix for this?

Try this and see if it fixes the freeze/hang issue, until a more permanent fix comes along:

1) Open Chrome and type "about:plugins" in the address bar.

2) When the plugins page opens, click Details in the upper right side of the page.

3) Near the top of the page will be 2 files for Adobe Flash Player.

4) Find the file with the location that ends in Pepper Flash or pepflashplayer.dll.

5) Click Disable for this file and restart the Chrome browser.

6) Go to: get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download the latest version of Flash Player.

7) Once it installs, restart Chrome.

Try a few websites where CHrome would freeze and see if the problem is now solved.

Seems to be working.  I will try for a few days to test.  Thank you.
