Norton 360 won't install

Hi,

I'm trying to install Norton 360 but I keep getting a message saying 'Norton Autorun  is not responding'.  My lappy has been very slow for nearly a week now, but I didn't think it would affect this.

Please, does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me?

Do you have any other anti virus or security software installed?

If so, it would be best to remove them prior to installing N360.

I would also suggest downloading CCleaner and installing it. Before you run it, create a new text file, paste the following in it:

[Options]
Language=1033
WINDOW_LEFT=538
WINDOW_TOP=258
Include2=PATH|C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Temp\|*.*|RECURSE
(App)Custom Folders=True
BackupPrompt=0
MSG_CONFIRMCLEAN=False
WINDOW_WIDTH=832
WINDOW_HEIGHT=495
WINDOW_MAX=0
UpdateKey=05/30/2012 04:29:41 AM
Include3=PATH|C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\|*.*|RECURSE
SkipUAC=1
Include4=PATH|C:\Windows\Temp\|*.*|RECURSE

Be sure and insert your name where the bold text is.

Save it as CCleaner.ini. Put it in your CCleaner directory.

Run it and let it clean house for you. I would also run the registry cleaner it has.

Reboot and see if N360 will install for you.

Where are you installing from? What is the source from which you are installing.

If you lap top has been slow and you have not installed Norton 360 it is possible you are already infected. Try to download malwarebytes, install, update and run.

Hi, Bullspit.

No, I don't have any other AV or security software installed.  Have tried CC cleaner.. still no go I'm afraid.  Thanks for your reply and help.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Hi, Cgoldman.  I am trying to install from disk.  Have since discovered that if I go to file iexplore and run as administrator everything runs just fine.. problem being, I have to do this manually everytime I log on.. how can I configure this so it does it automatically?

Also, I have some errors from source: Service Control Manager (User) but when I click on 'run as administrator' it brings up a list and I'm not sure what to look for.. as I'm thinking (clutching at straws) that something in this is preventing me from installing Norton.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Sorry, Bullspit.  I should've mentioned I'm currently using NIS 2012 19.8.0.14.  Am reluctant to uninstall it first so I can 'try' and install 360, I think then I would be left with no AV!

Re: Norton 360 won't install

I'm at a loss.  Tried following Harry P's instructions in a similar post.. no joy. £40 wasted. :(((

Re: Norton 360 won't install

First, you should remove NIS 2012 with this: https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?ct=us&lg=en&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&docid=kb20080828154508EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

Then, I would do a system file scan, since it sounds like other things are being strange with your OS.

Go to start, and find the "Run" command. (I customize my start menu so I forget exactly where it is.) Type in: sfc /scannow . Hit enter and let it run. It might prompt you to reboot.

I would also run a full scan with Malwarebytes antimalware, as suggested earlier.

Then try to your 360 install.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

The sfc /scannow found some corrupt files but said it could not repair all.  Have scanned with MBAM and Norton.. nothing detected.  Am really reluctant to uninstall my current Norton product as I have a feeling that that won't make any difference and then I'll just be left with poopy Windows protection.  Sigh I just don't know.

Have tried chkdsk and disk cleanup and other things.. have tried running Norton Start Autorun as administrator, nothing has worked.  Thanks for your help, though.

You dont say what files could not be repaired with sfc? Personally I would not have suggested sfc but as you have run it, I would run it a second time and see what results you get. As to chkdsk please advise exactly how you ran this and the selection of options are all important. I would not run disk optimizer.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Hullo!

I ran sfc again.. it said the same thing.  It didn't state which files could not be repaired.  I looked at the CBS log, but to be honest.. I don't know what I'm looking for! All a bit gibberish to me lol

With chkdsk I went to start and typed it in.. went to file location - C:\Windows\System32\chkdsk (.exe) - right clicked as administrator.  Is this the information you need?

Hey! I was wondering .. the Start Autorun feature opens with notepad.. well sometimes with notepad (like with the CBS log,) it comes up as not responding.. so do you think it would do any harm to change it so that Autorun opens with wordpad??

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Hi, again.

Does anyone else have any advice or suggestions for me? Maybe a Symantec employee could help if they read this.  Many thanks.

When you ran chkdsk did you use the /r  option to check the physical disk surface?

Are you installing while logged into an administrator account?

Re: Norton 360 won't install

HI, Peter.   No, I haven't tried that option.

Hi, SendOfJive.  I don't know.  How do I check if I am? I haven't changed anything.  I do have to run as administrator to get IE to run.  None of this was happening till ... last Saturday, I think it was, when I updated to the new version of SuperAntiSpyware.. that's when it all changed.  I've uninstalled SAS, since.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

I created a new user account.. it still won't let me connect to the internet! Haven't tried installing 360 from it yet.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

And it won't let me change to standard user.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Was the superantispyware the free version or the pro? Either way you should follow the instructions at http://www.superantispyware.com/supportfaqdisplay.html?faq=47

I suggested the  / r option because the issue with sfc check could indicate you have some bad sectors in use that can restrict access to the files.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

It was the free version.  I think I used Revo to initially uninstall it, but have followed the instructions from the link you posted.

The scan said there is 8KB in bad sectors - when the scan finished it said that the file system on c: is clean.  I've scanned this, that, the other and it's Mother .. with suggestions and help from other forums.. no definitve answers as to what is going on.  The search goes on.. what to do next ..........I know! Throw the lappy out of the window and get a life! :D

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Try the sfc  scan again, now that the bad sectors have been identified.

Then right click on the Norton 360 installation file and click on 'run as administrator'

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Do I need to run the scan the same way as before?

Kudos0

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Yes. Run it as you did before following Bullspit's instructions above.

I am just trying to see if there is any difference in the result. ie Will it be able to fix the files this time.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

I have been following this thread but it seems to me that it is not getting resolved.

First I would suggest posting your operating system

Then advise if your user account has full administrative priviliges

Then download vanity N360

Install

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Hi ghosty,

Which version of N360 are you trying to install?

Are you installing N360 from a CD or a downloaded copy?

Can you please attach a screenshot of the error that you are seeing when installing N360?

Which OS version and service pack are you running?

It looks like you already have NIS 2012 on that machine.  Is that right?  Are you trying to install N360 over that?

Thanks,

Chandy

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Hi, Peter.   I ran it as before. It still said 8KB in bad sectors, but this time it said the volume is clean.

Hi, cgoldman.  My OS is Vista SP2 32bit.  Yes, my user account has full administrative privileges.  I just need to wait a little while to try Vanity N360 download.

Hi, Chandy.  I'm trying to install 360 v6 Gold edition from a CD I bought from a reputable company (?)  Currys (in Uk)   I'm running Vista SP2 32bit.  Yes, I am trying to install over NIS 2012, because I'm reluctant to uninstall it as I feel the problem may lie elsewhere and I've never had a problem using this method before. (Will probably have to eat my words on this one!  Apologies in advance to all if this is the case.)

Will post 2 separate screenshots: One of the install window - and one of the error message, as I could not save both in one screenshot because then paint would not respond.

Are you running the   sfc.exe /scannow     or the chkdsk? I was trying to get you to run the sfc check as Bullspit suggested above.
It would probably make things easier if you uninstall NIS before installing 360. Be sure to backup/export your Identity Safe Data if you use that feature.

I just noticed this...Your scan still showed 8KB in bad sectors.
When you ran the chkdsk I asked above, did you use the exact command  "chkdsk c: /r" ? The '/r'  should have corrected the bad sectors.
If you missed the /r, please run the command again.

Re: Norton 360 won't install

Hi ghosty,

Thanks for the information!

The screenshot seems to indicate that the autorun application start.exe on the N360 CD is crashing when you try to launch the installer.  Can you please browse to the CD using Windows Explorer and launch setup.exe instead?  This should start the N360 installer.

Regards,

Chandy
