Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Hi there,

For the past day I have been unable to access the internet using Chrome. No matter what site I try, it fails to load the page. I checked with FireFox to have every page I try load successfully. Upon disabling the Smart Firewall and Auto-Protect, I was able to load the pages in Chrome. Not sure why this came about all of a sudden as I don't believe I updated anything on my laptop. I have also tried disabling extensions and clearing my cache, history and cookies.

Something else that had me confused was the fact that I had no problems whatsoever with Chrome on my desktop, which has the same Norton as my laptop as we bought multiple licenses.

If I could please get some help that would be great.

Thank  you.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I have a similar problem with Google Chrome.  Since installing the latest version of Norton Internet Security Google Chrome only displays a medium grey page, I cannot even access my favourites, history or google chrome tools.  I tried the solution posted above and it had no effect.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I have Norton 360 and only experienced occasionnal blocking upon a sandboxed Chrome which crasshed, but otherwise it's ok! I suggest you erase your chrome apllication in your FW settings (my Chrome is set to "Auto", but just erase it!) in program settings. Then launch your chrome browser, it should be ok!!!

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

It's been almost 5 days and no Symantec help. Wonderful.

Anyways, it has been a huge pain to have to copy and paste URLs from Chrome to FireFox.

Thank you gdiloren, I'll try what you say.

SO FAR the above solution has been working, thanks!

I would still love for a Symantec employee to reply. I thought maybe they were off for Thanksgiving but I doubt they follow the Canadian holidays.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Am I EVER going to get a Symantec employee? The other solution no longer works. Chrome no longer opens.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Just renewed my NIS license and downloaded NIS2013 (version 20.1.1.2).   NIS is working with Firefox, but Chrome doesn't work (can't access my homepage or anything else)

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I just received a pop-up from Norton to try the latest version of internet security (20.1.1.2) and downloaded it (BIG MISTAKE) Now I can't get google chrome to load like the rest of you. I've still got 120 days left on my 2012 subscription and have the disc. Looks like there is no fix, so I'm going to uninstall this version and reload 2012.  Needless to say I won't be buying 2013.

Hi milo44,

After you get NIS 2012 re-installed, make sure to go into Settings and disable Automatic Download of New Version. Installation files for the 2013 version were downloaded to your computer during idle time(s), and that's why you got the popup prompt for the new version.

After you're set back up, go into Settings > Computer > Updates > Automatic Download of New Version > move slider to Off position > click Apply. This will stop any popup prompts to update until you are ready on your own terms and time. Make sure to disable this setting soon after you are back to the 2012 version.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Still no help other sending some logs over to Norton wich didn't do anything for me. Chrome rarely opens and I have to basically turn NIS off to load a web page. Even then, the only website that seems to work is symantec.com. It is very frustrating that I have to be forced to use a browser that I do not care for because something like this is happening. It would be great if someone could at least run through a few checks with me. Getting frustrated here.. I've reinstalled Chrome twice now and still no dice.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Hi

Do you've Rapport installed in the Computer along with Norton Security? Check the below link:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Google-Chrome/m-p/836616#M222192

If you've Rapport in the computer then when you open Chrome you can't access anything even the settings, you only get a blank page. Remove Rapport and then check.

I searched my computer for Rapport. No such luck. There is nothing by 'Rapport' on my PC. Is it a program installed along side NIS?

Trusteer Rapport is a program most often offered by online banks.  You would probably have had to agree to install it when visiting your banking website.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Yes, it is a program which is provided by banks to their customers, it's a kind of Intrusion prevention software.

Reset the Norton Firewall and then try to Browse using Chrome.

Norton Internet Security->Settings->Network->Smart Firewall->Advanced Settings->Firewall Reset, click on Reset.

If the above is a No go, then try to create a New user in Chrome and then try to Browse the Internet, using the new user.

Follow instruction here to create a new user: http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2364824

Thank you for the replies!

However, I was unable to find any trace of Rapport.

I was able to create a new user, but when the new window opened the page to set up the new account would not load.

I also reset my firewall as you said.

Thanks.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I tried to load a page on Chrome again after my last post. It seems as if I had a burst of luck; I was able to load Facebook as well as eBay for about 20 seconds before getting stuck again.

I will keep trying but reseting the firewall may have helped.

Thank you.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

Hi, I am having the same problem and have gone as far as re-installing Window, NIS, and Chrome.  I spoke with the technical support folks and gave them recreateable examples of the frozen target web page, then disabling the Norton Identity Protection extension, and it works fine afterward.  It is a definite bug and It is really a pain to have to either disable and re-enable the extension each time or use another browser.  I am hoping that some of the developers are monitoring this forum because troubleshooting this issue I fear might be beyond what offshore support might have access to.

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I too am having issues.  Chrome was working just fine, but now displays just the gray page.  Uninstalled Chrome, reinstalled and nothing. The Norton shield is on the Chrome icon, so something is blocking?  I've also reset my firewall with no change to using Chrome.

Help!!

Re: Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I too just ran into this problem on two computers within the same day!!! Both worked fine then just quit. I do remember Java installing on both as an update! It did this yesterday updating Java to 7U11 Maybe check Java settings to see if that works or uninstall java to see if it works. I will be doing some testing today and will write back when and if found any thing!!

**Here is an update**

I did try and do a few things one was disabled NIS Identity Safe just for a little bit and than NIS Firewall which has allowed both computers to use Google Chrome. Then I went in an used live update from the control panal of NIS 2013 and one computer had to restart but this one did not but I restarted it any how. Then Google Chrome is working. Then I re-enabled NIS Identity Safe.! Well hope this helps! Bye.**
