FBI lockdown virus

Hi,  working on my husbands computer.  Yesterday, somehow, he picked up the FBI virus ( I think it was yesterday as it did not show up until then ).  Tried scanning with Norton while in safe mode and got nothing so figured it was still too new.  Restarted in safe mode and restored to previous version dated 9-28 or 29 can't remember which without looking it up again.  When computer restarted it seemed okay.  I opened the internet and left it there and nothing.  Then this morning when he got up it was back.  He did nothing but clear the screensaver and it was there.  It was NOT there when I went to bed about 12am because I checked his computer.

I could try restoring again... but if the same thing happens I will still be where I am now... so am asking for help removing this virus instead.  I did run Power Eraser... downloaded in safe mode and ran it... as it had to reboot I let it and let it boot up normally.  I had a long enough window to start the scan before the FBI window popped up.  I waited several minutes hoping the Eraser was running in the background.  Then I hit the on/off button to restart  the computer.  As the screen cleared I could see that the scan had finished but it flashed off to quick to see results.  I went back in - in safe mode and did it again choosing not to run the same scan, picking instead the one where it did not restart.  Ran it - results "CLEAN".

This pc is an Acer running XP Pro - has all the latest updates including service pack 3 from what I understand - it was in the shop about 3 months ago with a virus I could not clean and to replace the hard drive which was going out.  They reinstalled everything and updated and I reinstalled Norton when we got it home.

I saw QUADS note about not using the help in other threads instead posting and letting him help you directly so I am posting and hoping for a relatively quick response.

Using Norton 360 -

I came on in safe mode a few minutes ago and while reading posts here the computer restarted itself.  Not sure if it was the FBI virus or what.  So far I've been here a little longer and not been booted.

Anyway... any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks

Beth

Okay... that explains why it rebooted while I was reading posts here in safe mode.   Can I get help removing the virus from my husbands computer?

Is it able to stay in Safe Mode with Networking, without crashing or rebooting since??

Re: FBI lockdown virus

Computer is still running in safe mode with networking.  Using it now to send this.  Except for that one reboot it hasn't done anything strange.  I know the virus needs removing and you said to wait on you so I have.  Except for those things listed in my original post I've done nothing and I did those before I found these posts. :/

So what's next?

Re: FBI lockdown virus

ANY other user other than the thread starter is not to use any instructions, scripts or proceedures,  The work though in cleaning a system is individual and only for that system due to a number of factors.

Unfortunately, with the amount of threads means the waiting time is longer, Norton continually Blocking files won't hurt your system but is is just annoying, Please wait and be patient.   I am  trying to keep up, spending hours here to script and clean machines on a first come/first served basis. If you or someone adds to your thread It will be pushed back in line due to the new update.  I use the boards in reverse to what is seen

Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

  • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Do as the instructions ask nothing extra or run things twice
  • If I ask a Question just answer it, don't run anything unless it states.
  • Major steps used:

1. Find

2. Break

3. Destroy

4. Cleanup  (including system as a whole)

Please read every post completely before doing anything.

  • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forum, (sometimes )

  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.

Safe Mode with Networking

Re: FBI lockdown virus

Just a Heads up a quick look at the log,   You have more than you can see to deal with, including what ever happend to Norton, It may be due to the product update.

It is not going to be a one program  on script fix for instance it looks like you have 2 variants of zeroaccess rootkit and usermode also.

The output log, should be placed in the C:\ _OTL folder after.

Re: FBI lockdown virus

That is Ok, and the dead file is in the temp folder so It can stay there for now.

Now for the second suspected  zeroaccess variant with filesystem

Normal Mode from now on

Due to the fact you had an ADS, which can mean another infection group or groups

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

Download TDSSKiller from http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208280684  click on the TDSSkiller.exe green link.

Double click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application,

Open the Change Parameters option and select the detect TDL File system

Click OK

Then on Start Scan.

If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

Look for the Filesystem detection

It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste into Notepad and attach back here.
If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ ) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please attach the log in the post back.

[2012/07/30 19:21:56 | 000,000,000 | ---D | M] -- C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB1858$\786639265\U

Please read carefully Read all of this message first

Download Combofix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix

  • Ensure that Combofix is saved directly to the Desktop <--- Very important  (not in the download or temp folders)

  • Disable all security programs as they will have a negative effect on Combofix, Disabled for say 1 hour or more.
  • Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running

Right click the combofix.exe on the desktop and select from the menu "Run as Administrator"  If required.

  • If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?" Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this. Once the recovery console is installed Combofix will then offer to scan for malware. Select continue or yes.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

*EXTRA NOTES*

  • If Combofix detects any Rootkit/Bootkit activity on your system it will give a warning and prompt for a reboot, you must allow it to do so.
  • If Combofix reboot's due to a rootkit, the screen may stay black for several minutes on reboot, this is normal
  • If after running Combofix you receive any type of warning message about registry key's being listed for deletion when trying to open certain items, reboot the system and this will fix the issue (Those items will not be deleted)

Re: FBI lockdown virus

Hi.... question...  am on my pc because I didn't want to risk messing up the combofix running on my husbands pc

I downloaded and ran conbofix - before running tried to open Norton 360 so I could disable but it wouldn't open, maybe because I installed it under his account and not the admin? - any way closed everything and ran file.  Got the recovery pop-up and said yes.  Then it wanted to know if I was running XP HOME ED. click yes... since it's not - it's XP Pro I clicked no.  It ran and found something then popped up trying to do something with Norton and failed.... then it  opened a new window "Window XP Home Edition SP 2 CD Boot Floppies " a user agreement and wants a yes to continue

Do I accept even tho he has XP Pro on his machine?

Thanks

Re: FBI lockdown virus

Don't accept and close Combofix don't run it any further.

I know Norton has problems and will probably have to be removed and  fresh installed at the end.

I will see if I can script to get the folder manually.

Re: FBI lockdown virus

Ok, all we have to do is check for the likes of PUP's, do complete system scans and clean up.  Oh and sort out Norton,  which may be why the net speen seems slow, if the Firewall (Norton) is playing up

The bigger log is for the first script, the small one is for the script just run.

Re: FBI lockdown virus

No we wll do the Step 4 parts first, just be careful what sites you go to, you are unprotected at the moment

step 4. (a)

Please read carefully and Slowly

You might have to export the results

 Please scan with ESET next

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the  button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on  to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the  icon on your desktop.
  • Check
  • Click the  button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check  and DON'T (NO) check Remove found threats (reason for this is we don't want something deleted and then Windows won't load).
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • Attach the resulting log in your next reply

If you think a log should have been generated then go to C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt to find it.
