Norton's coIEPlg.dll Causing Problems in IE

Hi Everyone,

I am using NIS 2012 and ever since they did updated NIS2012 to version 19.9.0.9. internet explorer 8 will give me a crash notice immediately after I have closed the browser.

I don't know if this is because I have closed the browser window before a web page has been fully loaded or what but according to event viewer, the crash is caused by coIEPlg.dll which is a file that belongs to Norton.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Is there a way to unload/reload the Norton toolbar? Also how does one check to see what version of ID safe and Norton toolbar that they have?

Any help any of you can provide would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

P.S.  I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit  Service Pack 1.  Here is the crash report in Event viewer:

Re: Norton's coIEPlg.dll Causing Problems in IE

Hi spywriter007,

You mentioned Norton Toolbar - do you have it present or not?  Was it there prior to 19.9.0.9?

It appears you do not have the correct version uploaded version of coIEPlg.  In IE, on the Menu Toolbar plese go to Tools > Manage Add-ons and tell us what version of Norton Tool bar is displayed and also if it is Enabled.

Just curious, being on Win 7, why are you still using IE 8, instead of upgrading to IE9?

Please provide the info requested.

Re: Norton's coIEPlg.dll Causing Problems in IE

Hi Yank,

Thanks for getting back to me.  Norton toolbar was present before version 19.9.0.9.

IE8 lists three addons for Symantec/Norton

Name:                   Norton Vulnerability Protection
Version:                10.2.0.0

Name:                   Norton Identity Protection
Version:                2012.5.6.10

Name:                   Norton Toolbar
Version:                2012.5.6.10

IE8 seems to erroneously indicate it has crashed after I have closed a browser window.  It seems to occur on pages that are heavily crapped up with Flash and lots of Javascripting.  I am thinking that perhaps the scripts are not fully loaded when I close the browser window and this is what triggering the crash warning?

Anyway... you are wondering why I am using IE8, I use IE8 because IE9 does not display desktop gadgets correctly.  Desktop gadgets such as weatherbug show a white border around them when you mouse over them.

Re: Norton's coIEPlg.dll Causing Problems in IE

Hi spywriter007,

Thanks so much for the feedback.  I'll admit it has been a long time since I have used IE8 and am not up to speed on the version numbers required for the add-ons, so I have asked for assistance from other Guru's who are still using IE8 (they are XP users).

To the best of my knowledge the add-ons for IE should not have changed with the 19.9.0.9 update, as it had nothing to do with IE.

So please be patient for a response.  Sorry I couldn't help more.

Can you also provide a few example URLs that demonstrate the problem?

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Norton's coIEPlg.dll Causing Problems in IE

Hi John,

Sorry for not replying much sooner to this post.  I would say anything on Yahoo News that has embedded video would be a good example of where I get IE-8 crashing due to a problem with coIEPlg.dll.

Yahoo uses an excessive number of scripts... and if you close a Yahoo page before it fully loads, IE 8 will crash because of coIEPlg.dll.
