How to remove click.livesearchnow virus?

First-time post here.

I caught a redirect  virus last night that I believe is called click.livesearchnow. At least, that's one of the urls the virus sends my Google search to. Norton 360 scan doesn't find anything. Can anyone tell me best way to get rid of it? By all accounts, this is a dangerous virus.

Btw, I did a search here for l"click.livesearchnow" and came up snake-eyes, which was a bit surprising. Perhaps it's known as something else?

Thanks, jon

Looks like it is done by a PUP or zeroaccess

Did you try using Norton Power Eraser or Norton Bootable Recovery Tool?

If not, please try that & let me know the results. Also, try to clear the Internet temporary files & windows temporary folder.

Thanks,

I can tell you first hand its a pain, I delt with Norton for four days to remove it from my computer. They actually messed my computer up even more then it was, they removed files that op system needed, next you know I was getting bsod's nonstop. Save yourself four days of hassle/fustration and reinstall your op system. I'm running Norton 360 "upto date" with windows 7 64bit.

As far as the name of the virus, Norton never told me that.

Snafoo [Jon]: Me too.  I caught the virus on my main home computer, and so far the support doesn't seem to be here.

Quads: ???  a PUP or a zeroaccess???  How does that help us resolve the issue?  I'm having a heck of a time googling anything 'cause the nature of the virus keeps redirecting my search results.

HarryP: Perhaps we should be asking you if YOU have tried using Norton Power Eraser or Norton Bootable Recovery Tool on this specific issue.  But to answer your question: no I haven't tried them, but I also haven't tried a shovel, or matches & gasoline.  I did try deleting all my web history and temp files, but that didn't do the trick

You need to read the posts from MARESFTW & MAKIRA with scepticism:  These posters were registered and posted these comments on the same day.  "Hmmm..."

The gist of MARESFTW's comment was, "You're doomed to failure and Semantec can only make it worse for you."

And I reported MAKIRA as inappropriate, not because his English sounded a little "off", but because in his posting he embedded two links to alternative virusprograms.  "Hmmm..."

Please remind me why I'm paying for Norton Virus Protection?  The protection is supposed to prevent this kind of thing from happening... and I would expect that they would have some answers about how to resolve the issue... not expect the community to find their own resolution and report back to them.

Peter.

That is why people like myself do things a certian way.

Does that mean they'll post, how to resolve the issue?

I tried resetting to a previous restore point, but the effort failed.

I have a feeling that "virus protection" is a means for extorting money from common computer users.

I already have Norton,  a service I guess I'm paying for indirectly through my ISP, but now I'm being asked to pay for "Virus Removal Assurance?"  What the hizzy!

Resolution... at least for now.

As advised: Norton Eraser did the trick.

Downloaded the file to the download folder [oops], and then moved it to the desktop where I should have saved it initially.

Ran [double clicked] Norton Eraser and accepted terms of use.

Scanned system (system restarts)

Norton Eraser itentified two files during boot-up:

ugmmdw.dll <----  I think that's the one.  It was recent to my system (within a day before symptoms occurred).

& Windows Live Movie Maker.lnk <--- lame old file.

Identified each of these files for removal (I don't use Windows Live Movie Maker.lnk too much anyway).

Click the FIX button (system restarts)

Open browser  voila!  Now, when I search "puppies," I get puppies; and when I search "porn," I get porn; and not visa versa.

Thanks for your patience and good luck to all.

Norton did not remove this virus.

I called and Norton was asking me for $ 135 for a service tech in-spite of me having their antivirus for last 3-5 years.

I used "uhack me" and it fixed.

Unhappy with Norton service

Hi,
That $135.00 service charge is being made by a private company that advertises that they 'support' Norton products. It was/is not Symantec/Norton.

The fee for the Norton team to do removal work is $99.00

Keep us posted

Re: How to remove click.livesearchnow virus?

There several links up directing you how to check your network settings to sort.  But I got rid of this virus by running tdsskiller.exe.  It's free BTW.  Norton Power Eraser didn't find it, neither did Spyhunter.  This is a slippery customer, you may have to check your HOST files for "added lines".  But, again, tdsskiller zapped it first try.

click.livesearchnow is not the same for everyone,   even if it is Pihar,   one without the BCD mod, one with the BCD mod,  zeroaccess, MaxSS, Tracur, DNS changer, PUP's etc etc.

FWIW, I noticed that Emsisoft's "Anti-Malware" was blocking redirects on my son's computer.  I have to go back and clean it up, but for those who can't get rid of this thing you might go on Emsisoft's site and see if they can actually block this redirect.

Re: How to remove click.livesearchnow virus?

It is easy to just block a list of I.P. addresses via like Intrusion prevention. Norton has done so for  users in the past.

Go to Extensions

Re: How to remove click.livesearchnow virus?

Just spent an hour on line with Naveen (Norton cs) tapped into my computer.  Ran the erase program deleted histories, coockies and did a bunch of other stuff that is over my computer literacy level.  Bottom line, they could not find or fix and suggested I spend $99.00 for another one of their programs to try to fix problem.  Not happy with Norton.  Will try some of the other suggestions in this thread.  Thanks
