Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

Goodday!

I have been having difficulties with Norton 360 in windows 8.

Everything seems very clumsey, for example, when i run the CCleaner, it keeps running but does not finish cleaning.

Sometimes restarting is a pain because it just hangs in the restarting screen.

Lots of security and network related issues reported by Windows Action Center. Of which the recent incident is where the Action Center keeps telling me that ''HomeGroup Is Sharing Files''!! I disabled file sharing but still the same message.

I went to the windows forum and found out that people who are using norton products are all facing this issue. here is an example:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w8itprogeneral/thread/660566b8-5a3b-46f0-9b90-c7d5f4db6559

Apart from this even downloads are not happening using the IE10, no file is being downloaded.

Overall it seems Windows 8 dosent seem to like notron products and is crying to perform.

Would norton be kind and look into this issue asap or do a refund for causing all the problems :)

I d be happy to use the windows defender if everything gets back to normal by disabling Norton.

Thanks!!

I also suspect Norton as the cause of the problem: When the PC's restart hangs, forcing me to hard-reset, the next time I turn it on I get messages from Windows 8' Action Center that Norton 360 firewall and unwanted program protection is turned off.

<<  I get messages from Windows 8' Action Center that Norton 360 firewall and unwanted program protection is turned off. >>

This is a known situation that Norton is discussing with Microsoft since Norton is in fact working correctly even if Microsoft says it is turned off ....

I find current versions of CCleaner are very slow on Windows 7 and 8 and I'm not using Norton 360. I haven't tried disabling Norton to see if it is verifying every access but I'll try to get round to doing that.

Try opening the main screen for N 360 and navigating to settings and turn off the autoprotect one with its subsettings. And then run CCleaner.

I'm sorry that the instruction is a bit vague but I don't have N360 installed here but with NIS 2012 / V19 and on Windows 7 I just did a test run with CCleaner and as I mentioned it crawled listing temp files one by one showing them long enough to red the path and name.

I closed it down using the [X] and then in my NIS went into Settings / Computer / Real TIme Protection / Real TIme Protection andf set the AutoProtect to OFF. Doing this on the first one sets the other 2 OFF also. Then Apply or OK and set the time to 15 minutes.

Then I ran CCleaner again and it flashed through the Analysis.

CLosed down without deleting the files and set the AutoProtect to ON and repeated CCleaner and it crawled again.

So that kind of slowness is due to Norton checking every file as CCleaner manipulates it.

I'll ask Norton about this. Meanwhile would you try this and see if it works for you.

Don't forget to set Norton back -- I just clicked on AutoFix and that set them back to default.

========

OK I'm in WIndows 8 now with NIS 2013 / V20 and the same behavior -- sluggish with AutoProtect on and rapid with it OFF.

Note that it you have the NIS/N360 icon on the System Tray, bottom right of the desktop, try Right Mouse Click and select Turn off Autoprotect .... that takes you to the right part of settings and just asks you to confirm the time OFF.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

I completed an upgrade to win 8 and wonder if that is some of the problem, when I uninstall Norton 360 everything seems to work again.  Otherwise I have to do a hard shut down if the computer has been on for any length of time and I have run several programs.  I also have the hang with "restart".  Not every time just sometimes.  When I do the hard restart and bring it back I noticed windows 8 disconnects itself.  I reboot again and everything works on the second restart.  It is an interesting problem to say the least.  I think I might just without norton for a month or so and see if someone will fix this in the next couple of updates.

Kevin,

<< I think I might just without norton for a month or so and see if someone will fix this in the next couple of updates. >>

If you mean without any security program that would be very imprudent and you would be more likely to have even more problems than at present.

Was yours an upgrade from an earlier Windows to Windows 8 or was it a clean install of Windows 8? The changes in Windows 8 are so massive that on top upgrades are inherently more likely to have problems.

Can you give the Version number of the N360 you have installed -- Support / About where it is in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number and may begin with 6 or 20 ....

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

Apparently, Kevin really does not want to give his Version Number. Maybe it's something that sends him right over the edge, or maybe he gets emotional about it.

Presently, I have uninstalled Norton to see if it is causing Windows 8 to hang on Restarting. The jury is still out and hopefully they don't stay out as long as Kev.

Please stay tuned to a computer near you for the latest results.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

I've problems too on Windows 8 about the Norton 360. Some times IE 10 and some programs freeze on the system services. I was try to work again with 2 clicks on theese program shortcuts, but not work. Windows 8 can be new Operation System but ı dont think only this is OS problem. I was restarted the Windows 8, actually need hard shut down on the case power button. But later if ı opened again the computer, when Norton 360 write on the main window ( Antivirus Side, The first Left column on main window )" Your computer not protected". If ı want to resolve this problem when ı must uninstall and install again. I hate this. Because this is not good and ı dont like the waiting about same problems. I was try resolve without re-install or uninstall, but ı cant. Because Norton Management cant too. This is really bad.  I was boring for resolve this problem with uninstalling or re-installing. Please Need help.

Notice ; I was share the pictures about the problem. Maybe I use the diffrent Language on Norton 360 but error message icons same. Second image from the Norton Management Web site. It cant resolved too this problem.

I've Windows 8 Upgrade Version. All programs work on this OS without Problem. This is not OS problem. My Norton 360 Version is 20.2.0.19   If ı clicked the "Check The New version" button, when it say "Your Version is up-to-date". I dont have the error to upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8. Why Norton 360 have this problem ?

Notice ; I was Using the Windows 7 Ultimate Until Upgrading to Windows 8.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

I have the exact problem of windows 8 hanging on restart with Norton 360 installed. Soon as I uninstalled 360 the problem disappeared, so it is clearly Norton 360 which is the cause of the problem. I want the features of 360, so I reinstalled it and am putting up with the hell of having to use the power off routine to reboot. When will Norton have a fix for this problem?

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

My Norton 360 is version 20.2.0.19.

By the wait it also causes Microsoft Word 2010 to frequently not start without a reboot.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

A Norton Internet Security user here and I'm having the same problems as the 360 users with the intermittent freezes on restart. My uncle, who I've just upgraded to Windows 8 on a different make of PC & is running Norton, is also having this problem.

One oddity I've noticed in the Event Viewer, which could be unrelated, is that before every frozen restart I get an 1530 error saying "Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services". And the opened registry key is related to Norton (comes under a Norton heading). Haven't checked whether I get this at every restart though.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

I wonder if the freeze on restart is connected to the WIndows 8 rapid start feature? I think someone suggesting disabling this if only as a diagnostic.

Here's a link to the message

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/norton-internet-security-windows-8-problem-HELP/m-p/889489#M228906

If disabling it fixes the freeze then try enabling it again and seeing if it stays fixed since I think I've seen it suggested that the rapid start stops startup items being arranged in the order they need to be done so if that is the case then once arranged it could be OK until something in startup changes.

Please let us know how you get on.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

Thanks for the link Hugh. I've just used the Norton Removal Tool to do a fresh install, so if the problem comes back I'll try disabling fast startup and see how it goes from there. Although I thought fast-startup was only used when you do a hybrid-shutdown not restart, so it seems there are knock on effects of using it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I hope it works OK for you.

I don't know enough about fast startup in Windows 8 to know how or when it is active ......

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

I'm running Windows 8, IE10, and have encountered 2 problems with Norton 360.  The Full System Scan stalls at about 160,000, and it won't close when I click on the Stop button.  I have to shut down and restart. After restarting, I start the Norton scan, and it starts scanning where it stalled and continues the scan successfully.  The second problem is with the Quick Scan.  It starts with the "Initializing" and doesn't proceed past that.  It just stalls, too.  The Norton version # is 20.2.0.19

My computer came loaded with the Kaspersky virus protection program which I uninstalled because I wanted to install the Norton 360 which we have on two of our other computers.  Had no problems with the installation, and all was running smoothly until the past 3 weeks.  The big kink in all of this is that it's an intermittent problem.  It doesn't happen every time I run scans but frequently enough where it's a real nuisance.  We've used Norton products for years and have never had problems like this before.  Just want a solution, hopefully, soon.  Help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

Uninstalling a previous security program using WIndows Uninstaller is usually not enough if you are going to install a different "brand" as you did with Kaspersky.

If as you indicate you just ran the Windows Uninstaller then you should download and run the following Kasperky tool:

http://support.kaspersky.com/1464

Follow the instructions there.

You can try a shortcut and see if that cures the N 360 problem but it probably will not so you I'd advise you to uninstall and it and reinstall it. The easiest way is to run the Norton Remvove & Reinstall Tool which you can download as below since it will remove N 360, clean up to some degree and then reinstall a preactivated copy of the current N 360 of the same kind -- Standard or Premier -- that you have.

If you are using Identity Safe or if you are using the "2012" version of Norton 360 identified as Version 6 and want to stay with it rather than get the "2013" V20 version (they changed the version numbers to bring them into line with the other products) then please say so BEFORE doing anything more so we can give you different steps to take.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

Before installing Norton 360, I did run the Kaspersky removal tool.  I have the online download of Norton 360 for 3 computers.  Well, this was the last computer download left, and I'm having trouble with it scanning properly.  I believe I can't use the Norton Removal & Install Toll since mine is an online version download.  I think it's the Removal Tool I'll have to utilize if that's the step that's necessary to perform next.  I just don't want to lose this download when it comes to reinstalling it.  I paid for it, and can't understand why this download of the 360 is not performing well.  The scan stalls when it's scanning the Microsoft apps for music, games (Mahjong, Taptiles).   But clearly I have no idea why even with a Quick Scan it only begins with "Initializing" and stalls.  About 2-3 weeks ago, while running Live Update I noticed a patch was installed.  It seems since that time was when I started having these scanning problems.  I haven't a clue what that patch in the Live Updates was for as I've never seen that happen before while running an update.  Perplexing?  Indeed!

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

bb,

Firstly, if you have a valid subscription then nothing you do will lose you the right or ability to reinstall it. If you have the activation key that I understand is emailed when you buy a download then that will activate the same product if we give you a download link here.

Secondly, if you can it is better to use the Norton Removal Tool after uninstalling in the usual way since it does a more intensive clean up than the Norton Remove & Reinstall. But provided you activated your downloaded and installed copy so that you have a MyNortonAccount the NRnRT will download from there even if your copy came from a different source.

I'm assuming you downloaded it from a legitimate source like Amazon or Norton itself; just that you did not buy a physical copy in a store?

The problem you are encountering can also sometimes be the result of an installation that uses a Download Manager to control the downloading and enables you to recover from an interuption in service .... but sometimes seems to result in something not installing correctly.

If you let us know whether you have Norton 360 Standard (2GB free online storage) or Premier (25GB free online storage) we can give you a link to download from Norton a single installation file that is the most current available for download and may well include the fix that you think may have had an effect.

Having said all that there is still, so far as I know, the situation with WIndows 8 that Microsoft is working to resolve with Norton and other affected security programs but that does not hit everyone from what I've seen here.

Yes, I have the product key, serial #, order date.  Ta Da!  It's the 360 Standard 2GB, and I purchased it here from Norton with the online download.  With my past puchases of Norton products, I bought them from a local store and had the product disc.  Never had a problem with any of them on our computers.  This was my first time downloading the 360 online, and it might be the last time I download a new Norton product online.

I've used the Vaio care tools and defragmented the hard drive through the Windows program, made sure all drives and updates were updated.  Everything says the system is running fine and could find no problems.  So, where is this problem arising from and what is causing it?   Still mega perplexed.  :(

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

OK.

Here is the link I use for a single file download of N 360 Standard:

Download N 360 V20 Standard 2GB edition

Save (Not Run) to a safe place on your hard drive where you can find it again.

When you are ready to install I recommend Right Mouse clicking on the file and selectting Run as Administerator  to start the installation. When it's completed run the LiveUpdate a few times with a restart inbetween until it says you are fully uptodate.

Please let us know how you get on or if you have any queries ....

As I've said here is a situation in Windows 8 that Microsoft is working on with Norton and other security application companies and I've no knowledge of when that will be fixed but I'm sure that Norton and the others want it as soon as possible.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

Today I ran a hard drive diagnostic test and it was fine.  I then ran the Nortan Power Eraser, and it didn't find anything.  I rebooted my computer and ran a Full System Scan.  It ran fine and no problems were found.  Of course, there's a "but" to this.  Several times IE would open to my homepage and then hang up.  I wasn't able to click on anything and have it work.  Shutdown and rebooted, and it worked after that.  My Norton Open Vault won't work now. So, it's late now, I'm tired of working on this and will get back to it tomorrow.  Hope things finally smooth out.  Oh, my live updates are all running fine, too.  Will check out the vault problem tomorrow, and if all else fails then I'll consider the reinstallation of the 360.  Thank you so much for your help with this.  I greatly appreciate it.

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

I guess you are lucky running the Norton Power Eraser .... we probably would have said "Don't" if you'd asked since it often causes more problems than it solves by messing up Windows itself.

Let us know if you get around to trying the reinstall but you better make sure Windows is still OK.

So far as IE is concerned, if that is your concern. all I can say is that for several months I have had continual problems with it (IE9). It will shut down when I go a different website via a shortcut on my desktop and when Windows Troubleshooter can find anything to report it refers to DEP.

Have you looked at Event Viewer to see what it reports when your IE freezes?

Re: Norton 360 causing problems in Windows 8

Just a quick update - tried a trial of a different security suite and was still having the freezes on restart, so it looks like the fast startup is the culprit. Having looked into a bit more, it seems it can have an effect on rebooting the PC. Will do normal shutdowns from now on (and put Norton back on).

What diagnostic did you run? Did it check for bad sectors? If not I would suggest a run of chkdsk.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

I only briefly tested Win 8, so I'm not sure if I remember how to get a command prompt. I think you just start typing CMD from the 'Home Page'. Then continue from the instructions above.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.
