Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

My Norton 360 does not protect my computer.

An alert keeps on showing that Auto Protect, Sonar and Anti Spy Ware are off. When I try to fix this it appears that these cannot be turned on.

Whether I try manually in the settings or I use the "fix now" button it is not working.

Also if I try to scan a document with INsight Network Scan I get a message that product is inactive which is in conflict with the message on the NOrton console where it reads "Subscription status: Active".

I have searched the forum and a suggestion is to de-install and re-install the product.

I have done this: the solution is fixed after re-installing but as soon as I restart my computer the problem reverts back to the original state.

It is very frustrating and I am thiking of switching to another anti virus provider as this product is absolutely useless to me as it is.

Product installed on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.

Norton 360 product installed is latest version as per update check

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Hi,

I just wanted to say that I have just come across exactly the same problem on my friend's old laptop. She, too, is running Win XP (SP3) and has the latest version of Norton 360.  There are five errors and they are:-

Auto-Protect

SONAR Protection

Antispyware

Incoming Email

Outgoing Email

I have tried to correct these settings, and though they appear to have been re-set, they instantly revert back to errors.

I have tried running a scan and it won't allow it. The error message is “Your product is inactive”. It isn't!

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be great. My current thinking is to remove the software using the Norton Uninstaller and then try putting it on again.

Many thanks,

Carol

From main page of N 360, Click on Support and then Subscription Status.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Hi,

Thanks for that.

But, I have already done that and it shows 221 days remaining of the subsricption and that it is active.

The problem seems to be right through the whole of N360 with errors that can't seem to be fixed.

How did you reinstall 360? Because of the issues you are seeing, I would suggest using the Norton Removal Tool. This does a more thorough uninstall to clean out files and settings that might have gotten corrupted.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format.
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Log into your Norton Account from here   www.account.norton.com
Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Try to log into your Identity Safe. If it works, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.

Please let us know if this helps.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Thanks for that. But, that's exactly how I did un-install and re-install Norton just a few weeks ago. I downloaded the un-installer from Norton's website and used that. Then, logged in to the account and re-downloaded Norton 360. I got all of the updates for it and it worked fine for about a week. Then, it has now hit this problem. Also, it is very slow trying to access the various different menus. The rest of the laptop is working just fine and is right up-to-date with all of Windows updates.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Check that your sytem date and time are correct.

As you are running XP I'm guessing this may be an older computer. It might be worth doing a thorough check of the hard drive, as disk errors can cause all kinds of problems.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

Let us know if any errors were found.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

I too had the exact same problem - with XP but not with Vista.  When I tried to run scans, I got a message 'product inactive'.  I tried the same troubleshooting tips as you did with no success either.  I happened to try Restoring my computer in safe mode to a previous restore point and also uninstalled and reinstalled Norton 360 and to my pleasant surprise, the problem went away.  So far so good, works fine, all's back to normal.  Only thing is that I've had to re-program my ID safe passwords....don't know how that all went away - I asked to keep my settings when I did the uninstall and install.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Eventually as I was still within the refund period (60 days) I have asked for a refund, de-installed Norton 360 and installed another AV product that works on my system.

My PC is now protected.

I am going to see if I can close this thread.

Sorry to see you go. But as you have moved on, be sure you have fully removed Norton with the Norton Removal Tool.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

So you call this resolved?  Un-install and use anoher product.

I ran into the exact same issue, brand new HP H9 Phoenix windows 8 64, installed 360 premium, worked for a couple of days, then some programs started to act funny and then quite working.  Norton started reporting errors and when I ran FIX it failed.  Un-Installed 360 and now everything is working again.

I have been using Norton for over 20 years and had just upgraded to the multiplatform 5 devices.  Looking like a bad move..

scorn99 and sombrey

You are working with 2 new items, Windows 8 and Norton 2013. There are always teething pains with new products, and when you have 2 at the same time, you can have twice the problems.

Do you now or have you ever had another security program on your computer? If so, you will have to remove it with the removal tool for that program.

After you fully remove even trial versions of security software, you should follow the instructions I posted above for a full uninstall and reinstall of your 360. Even if you had a trial of Norton Internet Security, it would need to be removed.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

I just started having the same issue, it started happening when I right clicked the system tray icon and disabled firewall and antivirus for one hour (to allow Adobe support people to attempt to help me with an adobe issue).  Win 8, 64 bit, been running 360 for months - first issue with it.

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Somewhere in windows I found a status for firewall and antivirus as "snoozed" or something like that.  Gave it another day, figuring I it would correct itself from my request to disable both for an hour...

Well now I ran the removal tool (backed up my identity safe first) for Norton 360 Windows 8, and the scanning is all back up and working.... BUT now i am getting the dreaded errors associated with timeouts logging into my norton identity safe. "operation timed out.  Check your network connection and try again" (funny thing is, about 30 seconds before this error, the other norton windows behind get updated and say I am logged into my norton account.  then once the error ocurrs, they revert back)

If I attempt to create a new norton safe, it realizes that I have one already, and the dialogue status message says "synching" with the whirly symbol, and then times out with the same error...

I can log into the online identity safe via a browser, and log into my norton account via a browser, but not via the norton 360 interface.

HELP!  Any suggestions?

When

Re: Norton 360 security at risk warning - unable to fix

Norton is having some issues with the Identity Safe servers. You will have to keep trying or wait until morning to finish setting things up.
