HELP PLEASE! PCEU virus removal

My Norton Internet Security 2012 protected Dell laptop running Windows 7 has just become infected with the PCEU virus.

The  laptop is completely locked and says it won't unlock unless I pay the ransom.

Please can some kind person advise how I can rid myself of this virus?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Sorry to hear of your infection. Others say this is not a malware removal site, so no doubt you will be given advice about going to websites that specialise in malware removal such as bleepingcomputer.com. On the other hand anyone here can provide suggestions and you are free to take whichever road you wish. If you want advice here on how to remove, I suggest you advise whether you have one "user" set up or more than one user and whether you have tried "safe" mode (F8) or not and if so whether you receive a blue screen or can in fact enter Windows.

Just the one user set  up.

Have tried pf8 safe mode and cannot get in, it initially logs you in then when you get to the desktop it logs you out of Windows.

OK, this is a known effect.

If you want to continue here, rather than posting at one of the boards you have already been directed to, then you need to have a usb flash drive. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan tool from here

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

save to the flash device.

Plug the device into the machine when it is booted up in normal mode.

Make sure you get the version compatible to your operating system.

Ok the next step is to get to a command prompt before your version of Windows is loaded. We do this by going to the system recovery mode, and then selecting command prompt.

Here are the instructions

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US (or your country keyboard)  as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

select the last. If you can or cannot get to this point, stop. Report back here.

Re: HELP PLEASE! PCEU virus removal

Do not folliow the advanced instructions,   they are for use under supervision by trained users and MRT members. MRT"s give their own instructions and warnings first, as well as board info, they don't need others outside of that giving instructions for them.

It is their proceedure to follow, no one elses.

Please go to one of the other protected forums.

Re: HELP PLEASE! PCEU virus removal

My computer (Windows 7) was infected by this virus yesterday. I went online on my wife's computer and looked at various ways of removing this virus - none of them worked. I usually managed to get the computer started in safe mode, but whenever I clicked on anything on the screen the virus screen appeared. I even tried disconnecting the internet connection, but the computer was still locked, only showing an all white screen instead of the virus generated one.

I gave up and disconnected the power from the computer, with the intention of using professional help this morning.

When I re-connected the power and switched on the computer this morning, the normal start-up didn't happen, but a Windows start-up repair screen appeared, giving me various options (I cannot remember them to be honest) and I chose to do a System Restore. After this had run, it did tell me that the Startup Repair was unable to fix some things, but amazingly, my computer seemed to have been fixed. I logged in OK and immediately ran Norton Power Eraser followed by a full system scan. I've had my computer switched off and on quite a few times since then and the PCeU virus seems to have gone.

I've since read that Windows 7 has a built-in repair function for when the computer fails to start normally.

I'm still disappointed that this virus managed to get through Norton 360, but here's hoping it's fixed for good.

Re: HELP PLEASE! PCEU virus removal

Thanks but I've had no more problems, so I guess it's fixed. It looks like because I had to pull the plug out to switch the computer off, its' triggered the self-repair process. Clever stuff.
