Norton Internet Security will not uninstall

Problem this morning with connectivity.: Internet Explorer cannot display this page. Next message The Norton Product is not properly installed then 'The product installation is broken'  Note that the product was bought from Norton in July 2012 and has worked satisfactorily since then.

Clicking  the Norton program tags produced the message C:\Program files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine64\20.2.1.22\uistub.exe Unspecified error. Also Norton Internet Security encountered an error. Error 8504.104. Then Liveupdate repair failed.

Virtual agent  recommended uninstalling old version then installaing new version of NIS. Uninstalling procedure is quite straightforward but there was no response and no uninstallation after highlighting Norton Internet Security 20.2.0.19 and clicking on Uninstall/change (Windows 7). Blue highlight turned to grey but no prompt..

Turned to Norton Removal Tool.  Downloaded that for NIS onto my old system (XP)and moving it across to the problem system (Windows 7) using a memory stick . Message then: this file not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit). We have x64.

But the Removal Tool just specifies NIS not the system on which it is running.

Where to now?

Dick typed faster than me.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Identity Safe data.

Andrew

You started with NIS 2012 -- do you want to stick with that or do you in fact want to go to 2013? The Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool  on my understanding will uninstall what it finds in terms of versions but will always install the current version which would be 2013.

If you are using the Identity Safe and value the Local Vault then you will lose the availability of the local vault which is no longer in 2013 but is kept if you install 2013 as an upgrade to an installation that has the local vault.

Do you use the Identity Safe and do you have a backup copy of the data?

I suggest you let us know before you run the NRnRT.

Can you download the Norton Removal tool on your 64 bit system? I've not heard of this tool being sensitive to that.

Re: Norton Internet Security will not uninstall

Problem solved!

I couldn't get the Remove and Reinstall tool to work either - same 32/64 bit error message as before. Tried Removal Tool again and that still didn't work. Then tried a smaller 4GB data stick  to make the transfer - my old Dell Celeron 3.20GHz  doesn't like the higher capacity sticks - and this time the data wasn't rejected.  Removal and reinstallation proceeded smoothly and I find myself returned to the land of the living!

Thanks guys for your help - I raise a virtual glass of Pinot Noir in silent tribute!

Welcome,
Sounds like a mixmaster got to the bits and bytes of your program. Have you tried to Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool

www.Norton.com/nrnr

that usually does a good job of cleaning out the trash and installing an almost current copy of the product. You will have to run live update until the program tells you that you have downloaded and installed all of the updates. Be sure to reboot when indicated and once more after everything is updated.

Keep us posted
