Unable to update Ghost 2003 from build 775 to build 793

I occasionally re-install WinXP and then need to re-install Ghost 2003.  I previously had problems with LiveUpdate not being able to access the Symantec-Archive server, or LiveUpdate failed to find the Ghost 2003 update to build 789 and then to build 793.

I posted this inquiry in the past:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/LiveUpdate-Symatec-Archive-Server-Down-or-Gone/td-p/201996;jsessionid=260B43F2D2FCD4776B33246D74D65302

I did a search and found this new information stating that the old links to updating LiveUpdate no longer work:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/LiveUpdate-Archive-fix-gone-any-alternatives/td-p/795532

I was able to update LiveUpdate and add the *Settings.Hosts.LiveUpdate* file to my initial re-install of Ghost 2003 so that I can select the Symantec-Archive server when running LiveUpdate--but, when LiveUpdate runs, it says that build 775, which is the Ghost build installed from the installation CD, is the most up to date version.  But, in the past, LiveUpdate would update first to build 789, and then on second running of LiveUpdate to build 793.

Have the update files been removed from the Archive server again?  Can this be fixed?

Thanks for any help on this.

Can anyone help NightOwl? Can this still be done?

I don't have time to try it right now but if NightOwl says it's not on the server I'm sure it isn't.

I sent a PM to Andy asking for help and explained who this person is.

When Symantec\Norton ends support for a product, I'm pretty sure the LiveUpdate for that product is turned off. I'm trying to verify that. Dave speaks highly of you  so if you want to send me a private message, I can send you the newest build for download.

NightOwl,

I'm sure you already have ver 793. Does the Update Server do more than just update the exe?

Yes, I have Ghost 2003, build 793.  It's on my other computer that was updated a couple years ago.

Yes, here's the list:

update #2 that takes you to build 789:

ASPI1394.SYS
ASPIEHCI.SYS
gdisk.exe
Ghost Boot Wizard.exe
ghost.exe
ghostlu.exe
ghostlu.ini
GhostStart.exe
ghreboot.exe
ghstwalk.exe
ghwrap.exe
ng2003upd2.dis
readme.txt
VPartition.dll

and update #3 takes you from 789 to 793:

gdisk.exe
gdisk32.exe
ghost.exe
ghostlu.exe
ghostlu.ini
GhostStart.exe
GhReboot.exe
ghstwalk.exe
ghwrap.exe
INT86_16.DLL
Int86_32.dll
ng2003upd3.dis
readme.txt
VPartition.dll

I have never seen *Update #1*, so I can't comment on that one, if it ever existed..

Thank you for the offer.  As you can see in my reply to Brian_K, getting the Ghost exe build 793 is not really the issue.

When did Symantec\Norton end support for Ghost 2003?   I've been able to use the Symantec-Archive server for years to get the updates to Ghost 2003.  I presume that's why it was on an *Archive* server--it was no longer a *live update* from the Symantec-Live server--it just took you to the final product build that was available when active support ended.

I'm not really asking *for support*!  I understand that Ghost 2003 is no longer supported and is no longer being updated.  I just want the ability to update the product to its last supported build when I have to re-install it on my old WinXP system.

Seems unfair for companies to abandon their customers in this fashion--but, I know it happens.  Hopefully you will find that it was an oversight, and the updates can be returned to the Archive server.

Thank you for any information you can find out.

I install Ghost 2003 from a Norton SystemWorks Pro 2003 installation disc.  I install only the Ghost component--but the Help>About is regarding Norton SystemWorks--not specific to Ghost.

The result:  Help>About Norton SystemWorks:

version:  6.00   Build:  50

part number 10025230

Suite Application Installed:

                                    Norton Ghost

All Ghost files with a versiion number available by looking at the file properties is *2003.775*

Re: Unable to update Ghost 2003 from build 775 to build 793

Ghost 9 shipped with the Ghost 2003 Suite. I found the update (Ghost 9.0 SP2) to that product and posted it to a download site. Support typically lasts 7 years from the date of release. I'm showing the release date of Aug 2004, which is likely why it is not longer on LU servers

Grab the update here:

Password: Ghost123#  (expires in 1 week)

Hope that's what you need. If not, please let me know.

Thanks for your efforts.

Unfortunately, that is not what's needed.  Ghost 9 shipped with a separate stand alone installation CD for Ghost 2003.  Ghost 9 and Ghost 2003 could not be installed together on the same machine--one or the other only.  The file you have provided updates Ghost 9 only.  But, if one is fortunate enough to have the Ghost 2003's installation disc that came with Ghost 9, then updating is not an issue--it already has the updated files, and you have the final Ghost 2003 build of 793!

Let me backtrack just a little.....I am not really asking this question about updating Ghost 2003 for myself.  (I probably have greater than 10 installation CDs from multiple years from supporting several computers--and some of those CDs have the final 793 build--so I can install Ghost 2003 that is fully updated.)  I spend time at a forum where we often answer questions about Ghost--and one of the topics that comes up from time to time is how to update Ghost 2003 to the final 793 build if one's installation CD was from an earlier build.  When I discovered last week that all my previous links that allowed one to update one's LiveUpdate version to a version that allowed accessing the Symantec-Archive server, that in turn allowed updating Ghost 2003 to its final build were dead, that's when I posted my question here.

I don't know the internal politics or time and costs associated with leaving two update files on the Symantec-Archive server--but, seems like that once they are there, it shouldn't be costing all that much!  Being as Symantec chose to make the update files available only through the LiveUpdate channel, the only purpose I can see in removing those files at this point is to make for unhappy customers when they find out they can not update their program any longer.

There were two stand alone files (not installed via the LiveUpdate mode) made available back in 2002 and/or 2003 that updated Ghost 2003 from the initial installation build (775? or earlier) to build 789, and then to 793:  ng2003b789_en.zip, and ng2003b793_en.zip (might have been named ng2003b789_en.x86, and ng2003b793_en.x86--these may well be the file packages accessed and run by LiveUpdate).  If Symantec is not going to maintain the necessary update files on the LiveUpdate Archive server, it would be nice if these files could be made available through the Symantec FTP download website.

Unfortunately, I suspect that whatever factor(s) has made keeping the LiveUpdate files available not an option, will probably prevent having those files available through the FTP download site as well--darn.

Any further insights would be appreciated.

Re: Unable to update Ghost 2003 from build 775 to build 793

I'm going to send you PM with a link to an update on the live update server.

I "think" it may be what your looking for but I'm reluctant to post it in public because it contains ghost, exe.

file name "1165278149jtun_ng2003b793_en.zip"

Let me know if that is it.

Re: Unable to update Ghost 2003 from build 775 to build 793

Before you apply that.

Take that same link and change the last part to this: 1165278149jtun_ng2003b789_en.x86

The above will give you update 2 (build 789), the one I sent you in a PM is update 3 (build 793)

Reading some posts on your forum I see it mentioned that update 2 contains an updated file that is not present in update 3.

I also saw some posts about using these downloads to manually update the files by killing the running processes and manually replacing the files.

Hope thats what your looking for, not as convienient as a live update but perhaps acceptable.

Re: Unable to update Ghost 2003 from build 775 to build 793

DaveH

Those are the exact file packages that update Ghost 2003, build 775, to build 789, and then 793.

I'm amazed!  The update files are still on the Archive server.  But, for some reason the Archive server does not process the LiveUpdate request coming from my local computer when it contacts the Archive server--or perhaps more accurately--the Archive server is responding to the LiveUpdate request by saying the current build 775 is the most up to date build for Ghost--it is not acknowledging and/or processing that there are updates available!

Another installation anomaly that I noted--and I wonder if this has anything to do with it--but, you can no longer Register your program with Symantec.  You can go through the steps and fill out all the information, but when you attempt to send the information in, the process fails.  I wonder if one is not *allowed* to update unless your product is *Registered*?  Apparently, whatever web address that was used to register in the past is no longer active.  So, maybe the ultimate *catch-22* predicament!

But, it's very interesting that the update files are still on the server.

Sorry, I did not see that a new forum for Ghost has been created.

If the Admin or Moderator wants to move this topic, that would be appreciated.
