I have a worm virus in my computer! Power Eraser does nothing!

I have all the Norton Anti Virus features on! I think someone hacked into my computer and put a worm virus in it that Norton Anti Virus cannot detect! Everytime I try to download software or watch movies on Youtube that's over an hour long the computer reboots! I spoke to live chat about this problem before it escalated to Youtube videos and the virus for gone for about a week but now it's back!

Hi ATLNative3000, and welcome. Malware removal is not being done here, at the moment. We suggest you try one of the sites listed below, and stay with the one expert until your system is fixed.

It doesn't sound like anything that modern malware would typically do.    Is the PC rebooting or simply shutting down?  Do you usually shut down your computer at the end of the day?.

ATLNative 3000, before you go to any of the malware sites listed could you let us know which version of NAV you have, and what Live Chat said about your problem. It may well be a problem with the way your system is behaving. Are you fully up to date with updates ?

The person at Live Chat had me on hold for too long that's why I posted here. I usually shut my computer down at the end of the day. Now the worm has spreaded because when I try to run a full scan the computer will reboot in about 20 mins during the scan.

Laptop or desktop?

I agree with SendOfJive, I don't think it's an infection.

The most common causes of spontaneous reboots are overheating and power supply problems.

Overheating is the most common and easy to fix if you have a desktop by opening it up and cleaning all the dust out of it.

The way you describe it happening when your doing intensive tasks like watching videos and scanning your system makes it sound like that may be your problem.

Most systems have a hardware monitor program available at the manufactures or motherboards website that you can install and see the temperatures and power supply voltages.  If you run that tool and start a full scan you may find what the problem is.

Or you could install a utility like Speccy, which will give a comprehensive readout of your computer specs, and indicate if anything is untoward, like high hardware temperatures. You can download it from here....

I've been using Speccy on both PC's for a couple of years.  It's a very good utility, just about all of your PC's info is retreivable with the tool.

I also have something called Speedfan  .  It monitors your system fans and temps.  There's a tab with graphs, and you can set up an alarm-notification scheme, e-mail's, etc, if the tool detects a fan that's not operating.

Here's a screencap of the "fan/temp" tab from the tool:

No it's not overheating because it was fixed before. It was caused by malware from a toolbar spam that come with some downloads. When I remove certain files nothing happens. But when I try to remove Java 6 (since I have Java 7) the computer reboots and when I also try to download anything else the computer reboots.

Hi ATLNative3000

Even brand new products can go wrong?  As you have had the computer fixed what was the problem?

Do you have a laptop or a desktop?

What is the name of the Norton product and the version number, you can find this by clicking the Norton icon, click support, hover over, about, on the window that opens, the second line down is the version number.

The suggestion Scoop8 has posted is a good idea and if you can do this it will help the problem solving.  From the image on Scoop8’s post it looks like the chart tab may give the time line of the temperature record which is what is required, can you post an image of the temperature record using screen capture and the paint programme or use the snipping tool (see help and support from the start menu).

How to post an image in the Norton forum, link below.  Please check that personal information is edited out this can be done using the paint programme see help and support from the start menu.  Your image may take some time for a moderator to validate it, until then you will see a box with a triangle in it.

You might like to try a second on demand scanner?

The link below need the basic version downloaded not the trial or the pro the same when installing to avoid any real time protection which should be turned off as it can conflict with your security software.  To download latest version top RHS of page.  Install and get updates.  The site for the downloads of the software is OK but don’t click on the adverts.

I am on a desktop and I have Norton Anti Virus 2013. I think the problem is there maybe malware in Java 6. Everytime I try to remove it since I have Java 7 the computer reboots. When I had a problem installing Java 7 because the computer reboots the technician from Live Chat was able to fix it. But now I am told that Java 6 has nothing to do with Norton. The computer also reboots when I try to install or remove other software

Hi ATLNative3000 Try a Norton full scan in safe mode (see help and support from the start menu). Safe mode with networking allows an internet connection so physically disconnect the internet, disable the wifi before booting into safe mode with networking as Norton appears to be disabled in safe mode only allowing a full scan. Then restart the computer; can you repost with the result? Try uninstalling all java programmes in safe mode, one at a time so uninstall one java programme then restart the computer then do the next one? ATB intesec

Re: I have a worm virus in my computer! Power Eraser does nothing!

Rather than disconnecting from the internet and disabling wi-fi, you could just boot into Safe Mode, rather than Safe Mode with Networking.  If you are not going to need connectivity, why boot into a Safe Mode state specifically designed to enable it?

Hi SendOfJive

I’m not sure who your post is directed at, as you have made no reference to who you are posting it for.

As you can see I don’t post the information this way for some reason at times it takes out all the line breaks, so I’ve provided below what I did post before the post was corrupted.  The issue I am trying to point out is that Norton is not running in safe mode and if the person boots into safe mode with networking they can access the Internet with no security protection, which is why I suggest disconnecting from the internet if they boot into safe mode with networking, as I don’t know what the person may try.

Safe Mode with Networking loads the Windows Firewall, so there is protection.  AV is not running, but that is because loading those services and drivers would sort of defeat the purpose of Safe Mode, either with or without Networking.  If you want the user to be offline, simply specify Safe Mode, rather than Safe Mode with Networking.

Re: I have a worm virus in my computer! Power Eraser does nothing!

Hi SendOfJive

Thanks for the information; it led me to do some testing on windows vista home premium where I can turn the windows firewall on or off, off being the recommended setting I am assuming that XP may be the same.

Norton does not manage the windows security with vista as far as I can see unless some one can direct me to the path to find where this is available to view?

Booting into safe mode with networking does have a pop up with, check your computers security. Clicking on this brings up the firewall window where it states the firewall is off.

Asking people to do things is all well and good but what they may do is a different matter so if they try safe mode and it doesn’t resolve the issue they may try safe mode with networking and as they boot into safe mode with networking they may leave the computer for some reason and who knows how long for, they may also ignore the security message leaving the computer connected to the internet unprotected.

It is not a major event to unplug or disable the wifi perform the task(s) and then restart the computer in to normal mode and reconnect the internet but not disconnecting from the internet may cause a major event through hacking and/or infection if they boot in to safe mode with networking.

That is a very good explanation for the necessity of clear instuctions, and avoidance of complicating information about things that are not even being recommended.

Re: I have a worm virus in my computer! Power Eraser does nothing!

If you don't want the Internet connected  just use Safe Mode (min)  and not tell users to use Safe Mode with Networking,

The problem I see is you don't know Windows at a deeper level like most users in the World that is all.  Just have in your instructions "Safe Mode" not "Safe Mode with Networking" as you have been doing.

I don't believe it was edited, I think SOJ is showing that he is speechless after reading intesec's inscrutable post.
