Norton 2006 (10.2.0.199) Problems with Auto Protect, Vir-Def Updating and Windows XP Security Center
Norton 2006 (10.2.0.199) - I have XP with SP 3, P4 2.8ghz, 40g HD, free space is 1.7g. Norton Antivirus came with the system and I have no way of reinstalling it as a solution because the PC did not come with the disc.
Problem 1: Auto Protect can't be re-enabled.
When Windows finishes booting up, I noticed the Auto-Protect is disabled. When I try to enable it, in a couple of seconds it disables itself.
Problem 2: Live Update does not display the latest virus definition date installed.
Live Update runs to quickly to convince me it did something. A message appears and says that all is up to date. When you check the date in the Virus Definition section of Norton Anti-Virus it says 08/22/13. I don't believe that anything was updated. The last successful Live Update occurred months before this date.
Problem 3: Intelligent Updater does not display the latest virus definition date installed.
The last successful update using Intelligent Updater occurred on 08/22/13. I've downloaded the Intelligent Updater 20131119-017-v5i32 and executed the file. After 10 to 15 minutes (why so slow?) of waiting a screen appears and says if I want to continue the update. I click on 'Yes'. A message appears quickly and states that everything is up to date and to check the log file in the Temp folder called Log.IntelligentUpdater.txt. When you check the date in the Virus Definition section it says 08/22/13. It should show the date 11/19/13 as the date of the virus definition I just updated. I don't believe that anything was updated.
Problem 4: Windows Security Center can't find Norton Anti-Virus.
When I first got my PC, Windows Security Center was aware of Norton Anti-Virus. After a couple of months past, I noticed an alert in the system tray. I double click on it and the Windows Security Center popped up. It showed anti-virus software is as "Not found".
I need to know how I can fix these problems. Where can I look to see if something is broken. Do I have to edit the registry? Do I have to manipulate something in the program directory and files of Norton Anti-Virus? What should I do?
I am aware of the message that says to try the live update in 24 hours but I've had this problem for some time know.
