OnlineFamily.Norton supports following Instant Messengers to monitor Instant Messaging activity for your child:

• Yahoo Messenger

• MSN Messenger

• Windows Live Messenger

• AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) - (Note: AIM 7.0 is currently not supported.)

• Google Talk

Note: OnlineFamily.Norton does not support Web browser based clients of Instant Messengers listed above. Currently, OnlineFamily.Norton supports Instant Messengers only on Windows. Instant Messengers on Mac are not supported.

Thanks,
Katie

Katie,

Thanks for your response.  Do you think that OnlineFamily.Norton will be enhanced to support the IM ( to GoogleTalk and AIM users) that can be done within the web-based GMail client?  If not, I am going to see if I can find another solution for that.

All of our family PCs are on Windows 7.

Thanks

Hi kalahari,

Thanks for your inquiry.  Supporting Web browser based clients of IMs is on our enhancement list.

Thanks,

Katie

From time to time, the Gmail chat program - Gtalk (which has to be downloaded and installed) will switch to an encrypted mode, which we cannot montitor at this tiime.

Currently the Norton Safety Minder product does not monitor the Chat functionality of the gmail Website.

We are in the process of researching some fixes for this condition. In the meantime. I suggest having your children use the Gtalk client.

I have my kid use the Google Talk client and block all online chat. It seems that blocking online chat blocks only these web based chatting, not the IM client tools. The combination works very well for me. Accepted Solution

Yes, that works for Google Talk ONLY chat.  Unfortunately, my kids have friends who use Google Talk and others that use AIM.  The Gmail browser supports both of those IM users.

I guess I need to see if they can convince all their friends to use Google Talk...

How do you block Google Chat within Gmail?  I don't see any way to do that.  I can't get the Chat box to go away on the Gmail left menu (and I know there's an add-on that will move it to right menu).

Unless I am not understanding what you said?  Thanks

In OnlineFamily.Norton, go to Settings.

Select Web.

In "How do you want to supervise web activities?", select "Block the site".

In "Check each Site Category that you want to block from..", select "Online Chat".

Then, hit the Update Settings button.

This is what I did to block Google Chat. It should block any web based online chats too.

Just to be clear, this is what I was asking you how you did it.  I don't see how to enable "Google Talk client and block all online chat".  I'm looking to block online chat in Gmail web-based client.  Thanks

Please check "Online Chat" category to block all the online chats.

KatieQ,

I appreciate your response but that doesn't work.  Blocking "Online Chat" does not block the GoogleTalk chat that occurs from the Gmail web-based client.   I've just tested this again now.

I guess I'll just have to forget about blocking online chat.  I've allowed my kids to use Gmail and they want to use the chat that's built into Gmail -- they do not want to use Google Talk client.  It's weird that Gmail doesn't give the capability to turn off chat in their email web client.
