It might be that the engine has crashed trying to scan this file. If you can look in /Library/Logs/CrashReports (on Leopard) or /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (on Snow Leopard) and see if you can find any files that start with SymAVScan or NortonAutoProtect. If you find any, please attach them to the forums here. It's likely this problem is related to compression scanning. You can try turning off compressed files scanning in the Norton AntiVirus application. Launch Norton AntiVirus, and select the "Automatic Protection" tab. Click Configure next to AutoProtect. In the new window that opens, find "Scan Compressed Files" and turn it off. If that works, let me know. Finally, can you tell us what application created the Library.data file, and what is stored in it? Sorry for the problems. Ryan

Well the crash report tells the whole story. The Library.dat file is a StuffIt file. We have had many reports of problems with StuffIt files, and we're working to resolve them but the problem appears to be with the StuffIt engine. If you can use Spotlight to find the problem file, that will be of great help. Try using Spotlight to search for "Library.data". If that doesn't find the file, we can try finding it on the command line. Ryan

No problem. First, in case Spotlight was being cranky, we can try a different kind of Spotlight search. In the Finder, create a new window, and press Command-F (or choose Find from the Apple menu). In the new window, click "File name" (upper right part of the window). Then from the popup menu that says Kind, change it to say Name. Then enter in "Library.data" in the text field that appears. That might be more successful than using Spotlight from the menubar. If it's not we can use the command line. Open the Terminal application, and type (or copy and paste without the quotes) "sudo find / -name Library.data" This will take a long time on a large hard drive, but it can sometimes be more successful than Spotlight. Thanks for the great instructions. No go on spotlight, but using the command line there are four files called Library.data, all of which are in iPhoto. There is one Library.data file for each user. Here is an example: /Users/tonypritoburrito/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Library.data Any ideas? Should I set those files as exceptions not to be scanned?

Hm, those are probably benign files but unfortunately there's no way to exclude them from a scheduled or manual scan. The only way to work around it for the time being is to turn off compression scanning. Open the Norton AntiVirus application, and choose Preferences from the application menu. Then uncheck "Scan compressed files". This will only affect scans that you run manually; scans performed by Norton AutoProtect in the background will still scan compressed files. However, I'll try and get this bug fixed since it sounds like an obvious issue. If you wouldn't mind sending us those files, it would be a great help in reproducing this issue. Obviously those files are not StuffIt files, but for some reason the StuffIt engine is kicking in. If it's not a problem, contact me privately using the Private Message feature, and I'll give you my e-mail address. Thanks, Ryan

I should also note that even though disabling compression scanning seems bad, we will still detect viruses in the compressed files as soon as you try to use the compressed archive. So I wouldn't consider this a big security hole or anything. But I'll still talk to the antivirus guys and see if we can figure out what's happening. Ryan
