Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 (build 6002)

1.50 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (2 total)
Not hyper-threaded

120.03 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
65.76 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

3062 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Ok, I got a problem...

A couple of weeks ago I was on here unable to create a mirror of my hard drive. That got sorted out with the help of all you nice folks.  Now I want to start with the scheduled recovery points, but can't.

This is the first time trying it and here's what I get.

- Cannot create the recovery point.

-- Error E7D10026: Unable to get attributes for: 'E:/Norton Backups/:

--- Error EBAB03FL: The system cannot find the file specified.

Well, no it can't find the file. It's not there as far as I can tell.

My external drive has a copy of my internal drive on it. So it shouldn't have a Norton Backups file on it.

I try to create a 'recovery set point' but this option is disabled with the informational message:

"The recovery set point option is disabled because you have already assigned a selected drive to an existing recovery point set backup job. You can only have one recovery set point defined for each drive."

Now, I used the Copy Drive Wizard when I copied my internal drive to the external drive. In the wizard is the following information:

"Unlike the Define Backup Wizard, the Copy Drive Wizard does not create a recovery point file. Instead it duplicates your drive directly to another drive."

I WANT the mirror of my drive AND I want a seperate recovery set point, updatable on a schedule on the same drive.

Do I have to format my external drive and just have the less desirable recovery set point?

Kudos!

Hi! RodFranklin,

No, you should not have to reformat your external drive.  It may be possible that Ghost is still seeing the drive as it was before the problem you had in your other post.  Have you tried downloading updates for Ghost?  Providing that it does not cause any lose of information you might try reinstalling Ghost; but I would do this as a last resort.  Check the manual that came with Ghost (it may printed or it may be on the installation disc itself) and see if there is a way to reset Ghost.

Kudos!

Apologies for the interruption but would like to clarify a couple of things.

Hi RodFranklin,

Welcome to the forum.

When you said: "I WANT the mirror of my drive AND I want a seperate recovery set point, updatable on a schedule on the same drive."

Can you clarify what this means? If you done a Copy Drive to the external drive and also want to use that same drive as your backup drive for image backups I'm not sure that is going to work. First of all, once you make changes to this external drive to do image backups, it is no longer a mirror image of your internal (C) drive which defeats the whole purpose. Secondly, is there a reason you would like to do this? Copy drive is typically used to make a mirror image of the source drive with the intent to replace the source drive. Image backups give you the exact same protection and are actually more reliable and easier to restore your system drive in the event of a failure. Thirdly, the external drive could not be used to replace your system drive anyway as Windows only supports booting from internal drive.

I apologize if I am misunderstanding your intent and please clarify.

Thanks

Allen

Thanks for the interest.

I didn't know that my external mirror is unbootable.

I formated the external drive to erase the old mirror.  Tried to do a new recovery set point using the wizard and it failed saying there was already a setpoint assigned.

I had to go to advanced tasks and  'remove backup job'. The backup wizard begins, but fails, saying it ran into bad sectors...

Formating the drive again. Will remove the backup job again. Will do a chkdsk on the external drive then (rant on) see what else this delicatly stuck together little pile of third party parts and software will slow me down with next. (rant off)

RodFranklin,

Your external HD is unbootable while it is connected as a USB HD. It should be bootable as an internal HD but doing Copy Drive to a USB HD can be unreliable depending on hardware configuration.

What size is your external HD?

I am writing this from my iPhone which is difficult to do. When I get home from work I will expand more on this.

What is the exact error message regarding the bad sectors?

Thanks
Allen

And the backup fails... again. Did the format actually format the entire drive? How could the chkdsk command find so many things on an empty drive?

What is happening here and how do I fix it? Now, I no longer have a mirror of my internal drive either.

Kudos!

Hi RodFranklin,

Just got back home after one heck of a commute. :smileymad:

The read error when you attempt the backup is referring to your source drive which is C in this case. You need to run chkdsk on your C drive. Have chkdsk correct the errors on your C drive and then try the backup again.

Edit: One thing to mention is that it might be possible to have Ghost do an image backup for you before you actually run the chkdsk to correct the errors, just on the off chance that something goes wrong with chkdsk and it causes more problems. You can do this by selecting "Run or Manage Backups" from the Tasks pane. Then highlight the backup job and select "Edit Settings". Hit next a couple of time and when you get to the screen that has "Options" hit "Advanced" and on that next screen put a check mark on "Ignore bad sectors during copy". Depending on how bad the errors are this should force Ghost to do the backup anyway.

NOTE that if you do this you then need to still run chkdsk on the C drive and correct the errors and then perform another full backup.

Thanks

Allen

Hi RodFranklin,

I just looked at your old thread at:

 http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=other&message.id=14675#M14675

and am left with some concern. In this other thread you had the same error but toward the end of that thread you indicated you were able to mirror the drive successfully. Had you ever, since this other problem been able to do an image backup?

I would like to see the partition info for you C drive and your external USB drive. In the Ghost program directory, look for the Utility sub-directory. By default (if you did not change it during install) it is located in: C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost\Utility.

In that directory please run the exe file called PartInfo.exe. This will create a file called partinfo.txt. After running this utility please attach the text file to this thread. You can do so by clicking on the "Add Attachments" link at the bottom or alternatively you can copy/paste into the thread.

Thanks

Allen
