Win7 and Mac with common router and dsl modem backup problem

Have Mac OS-X (Snow Leopard) and Windows 7 machine using the same router
and dsl modem. Norton On-LIne back up works fine with Mac but with
Windows 7 it works only the first time I back-up. Thereafter on the
Win7 machine it shows the machine not being on-line and requires a re-
installation of NOL backup in order to recognize the Win7 machine as
being on-line. Once that is accomplished it works fine. Why do I have reinstall everytime on the WIN 7? For security reasons I take Win7 machine offline when not in use whereas Mac stays on-line as long as the machine is running. I always check to be sure the Win machine is online before I attempt backups qwith it. Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Hello gno52,

Have you tried rebooting rather than reinstalling every time? It should have the same effect and save you time on reconfiguring everything.

Basically what is happening is the Windows 7 machine is losing its connection to the back end servers. There is a ping performed from your computer to us that verifies if the computer is online or not. The biggest culprit of this power management putting the system to sleep or hibernate which effectively kills all network connections. When the system is woken back up it doesn't restore the connection fully. Hence why a reboot would resolve it normally.

Can you check your power management settings and advise what they currently are set for?

As you mentioned the problem happens after sleeping.

The tip on rebooting instead of re-installing worked. You asked for power settings. Under power options I went to system settings where it was set on balanced. Also went to wireless adapter setting and under power saving mode the setting was maximum performance. Is that the info you needed? What do I do to eliminate the need to reboot?

You'll want to disable all power management except for the monitor. You can find sample directions here:

I'd suggest also disabling power management for the network card but its not absolutely necessary. You can find info on it here:
