I have attempted this today several times and i get a message "incomplete cleanup". I have tried it in the "safe mode" and am running as admin. I looked on the McAfee site and went to regedit and found some McAfee items and removed them and still get message. Have re-booted a dozen times. There are many log entries that show "pass" and a few that say did not remove because they do not exist. Should I just try and install my downloaded 360v4 standard?...........................Thanks.

Just checking to make sure I have the right idea. I have a Dell laptop I purchased in 2007 that came with McAfee that is expiring in 10 days. I also have an almost 2 year subscription to Norton 360v3 that I want to install on this laptop. From what I have read I will remove McAfee through through "uninstall program" that is listed in my Windows 7 Home and also use the McAfee removal tool to remove all traces of it. Then from what I understand I should download 360 v4 from the Symantec site and supply my subscription key when prompted. Sorry this is probably pretty basic but just want to double check as my laptop is working fine and I really look forward to installing a Norton product on it..................Thanks.

In most cases you will not need a removal tool to remove Mc Afee, just uninstall all program components using add remove programs and reboot. Make sure no other antivirus programs/firewalls are installed. Download and run Norton 360 v4: Standart or Premier and run the downloaded file. Use your product key from version 3 and you are ready to go.

For detailed information, see: Installing Norton 360 Version 4.0

If you have more questions, feel free to post the here, on this forum.

Thanks!

Hello orucco

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

Your plan sounds pretty good. I would recommend running the McAfee tool 2 times with a reboot after each run of the program. You don't have to install N360 version 3 first. All you need is to use the key from the N360 version 3 if the key is still valid and hasn't expired. Here is the link to get version 4. Please pick the correct one based on how much back up space you have.

http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/N360-ESD-17-5-0-127.exe

http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/N360-PREMIER-ESD-17-5-0-127.exe
Please remember to run live update after install and check your settings.

This is how to get version 4

Version for Comcast users will be available later

After you install it, please remember to run live update until no more updates and then reboot your computer after that. If you have any problems please come back and we can help you further.

Hi Orucco,

Welcome to Norton Community!

You can follow these steps:

1. First download the installation file for the latest version of Norton 360- link provided here (Norton 360 v4 Standard or Norton 360 v4 Premier)

2. Uninstall Mcafee via Add/Remove Programs.

3. Run the Mcafee removal tool(run the tool multiple times to make sure that all components are completely removedd)

4. Install Norton 360 using the downloaded installation file.

5. Go to your Norton Account: http://www.mynortonaccount.com

6.

I agree with floplot and Yogesh - please use the McAfee Removal Tool (run it twice rebooting after each run) to get all leftovers of McAfee off your computer. You can download the McAfee Removal Tool and instructions from over here:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

IMHO - yogesh made a very good point when he said to download Norton 360 first.

That is how I have always been taught, download the replacement AV before you remove your existing AV - that way you are still protected. :smileywink:

Thanks, Yank

That is because download time varies - takes more or less time depending on the type of the Internet connection, speed and network traffic during download. But, the installation won't take more than 1 min for the new version of Norton 360. So, even after uninstalling Mcafee program, it won't take much time to get the security for your computer by installing Norton 360 if you already have the installation file handy.
