I installed Norton 360 onto my computer, and it began scanning for risks and fixing them. When it finished scanning, a message said that the computer needed to restart. So, it did. Now, it won't boot into Windows. It just goes in a loop. Can anyone help me?

It's an Asus. I don't remember what antivirus I had before, but it came installed on the computer, and expired a while ago. I had to delete it when I installed Norton because it said they weren't compatible. My computer had been running slowly, which is why I puchased the Norton. So, anyway, it installed fine and started scanning, but it took a really long time. I let it finish overnight, and when I woke up, it had restarted. But it said that the computer couldn't start and something needed repaired. So I clicked repair, and about an hour later, it said that it couldn't repair. I could click either 'finish' or 'cancel.' I clicked 'finish' and then the computer turned off. When I turned it back on, a black screen appeared that said I could repair, or run Windows normally. I tried the 'repair' again a few more times, but nothing happened. So, I tried 'run Windows normally' and it seemed to start loading up. It showed the Windows logo, then the screen turned black, and then it showed the Asus logo. After that, it just kept doing that in a loop.

I tried to run Windows in Safe Mode with Networking. That didn't work; it acted the same as when I clicked 'run Windows normally.' I talked to a man from Norton Support, who said that my computer must have a corrupt file or something. But all of this happened after I installed Norton. Before, my computer ran a little slowly, but acted perfectly fine otherwise. My cousin, who has an HP, had the same (or similar) problem, and had to have a technician come out and restore the computer to factory settings. I've even tried doing that on mine, clicking f8 and restoring it, but it doesn't do anything.

Thanks for your help!

Hi tgnn,

Since snowstorm apparently so unceramoniously dumped you in a manner I do not feel anyone should be treated I'll try to assist you.

First of all I know you mentioned your cousin had an HP, is it true you also have an HP Laptop?

If so, can you get back into Safe Mode on it and see if there is a Recovery Partition? I can see mine via COMPUTER - it shows the C: drive and a Factory Image (the same as a Recovery Drive) This extra drive (actually a partition of the internal hard drive) is supplied by HP in lieu of Recovery CDs.

I am not totally up to speed on the recovery using the Factory Image (Recovery Drive), but I am sure there may be another Guru here that will be able to provide the step by step direction you need - provided you come back and tell us what you can see in Safe Mode.

BTW - what exactly does the label on the Microsoft disc say?
