I am having the exact same issues described in the linked thread to the NIS problems. On 3 different machines. All running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1. I read through most of that thread on NIS and it sure appears to be the same behavior on both products. I did the NRNR method on 1 machine and it appeared to work fine, until I started adding rules for the firewall. I have a 4th machine that I clean installed Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1 and have had NO issues thus far. I upgraded 3 of the machines and only one failed after the reboot to complete correctly, thus forcing me to use the NRNR.
fresh Win7 64 bit installation - N360 crashes

I welcome the club - unfortunately....

Just until 2 days ago I had v5 of Norton 360 installed. I had to do a fresh installation of windows 7 64 bit on my PC and when I installed N360 I was greeted with the new version (had no idea there was one). Never had a single problem with the older version (great work Symantec!).

Now I started adding program rules to the firewall setting. It worked fine until today. I must have hit a magic number because it was working fine for a number of rules I added. Now, as soon as I try to add a firewall program rule it crashes. I am glad I am not the only one - already thought something on my fresh win7 installation went wrong. Unfortunately, there is no solution yet? Wow, that is disappointing. All I can say is that my subscription is running out and if this doesn't get fixed within a few days I will switch to another software package, very simple. Sure, you may not care, but this thread (got moved here from original thread with identical problem in NIS) is proof enough for me to consider this.

just wanted to make sure another user is added to the "Symantec, please fix this problem" list.

cheers

thank you for the quick reply and offer to help. I reverted back to version 5 and all is good.

what is interesting is that v6 was running fine for almost a full day and then all of a sudden started acting up whenever I tried to add a program rule (I've added about 10 program rules and one port when it started acting up).

Hello,

I have been facing a constant crash of Norton 360 Version 6.0.

It is happening while changing/configuring firewall.

Also Norton Autofix fails to find a solution!

Fault Module Name: SYMHTML.DLL

Error: 8504, 104

So I have got in touch with a Chat Agent.

As I was advised, I did a fresh install and even ran the Norton Power Eraser.

Product was removed using Norton Removal Tool as well.

Also the error is same in all of my three computers.

I had to downgrade Norton 360 to Version 5.0

Norton, please provide a solution fast, as this is one of the most advanced protection from you.

And failing like this just makes it less reliable.

Thanks.

I did some search and to my knowledge "UAC (User Account Control) in WIndows 7 might be the issue. Try below: 1. Turn UAC off, restart. 2. Customize firewall. (See whether it crashes or not.) 3. Restart again. Again customize firewall. 4. If it works then problem is solved. But this is a partial solution as turning off UAC is not advised. I would be happy have your feed back on this.

Still no luck! I completely reinstalled Windows 7 to a brand new hard drive. N360 worked for few days. Yes, it indeed worked well without crashing while changing firewall settings. But today it crashed! Same error was there. So I think that this might be the issue of a faulty update from Norton. Which I can't undo. So what I suggest you guys is to install the N360 V6 with 30 days evaluation period and with no internet access. Now configure firewall and see whether it crashes or not, which I think it won't. Now restart and configure again. Now all you need to do is to activate. After activation and updating re-configure firewall again. It might crash now (or after a day or two.)! Share your views to have a better resolution.

Even i had the same issue with my N360 v6. I guess I somehow resolved this issue

1. Go to Windows Firewall from Control Panel and select Advanced Settings which should open up Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window. Delete all the rules listed there (Inboud/Outbound/Connection Security)

2. Restart the system.

3. Open N360. Select "Manage Firewall" and do a Firewall Reset.

That seemed to have fixed the issue. Keeping my fingers crossed that it won't rise again.

Try this and let me know.

Vikram, thank you so MUCH! This appears to be working so far. I still have 3 other machines that have the issue, however it is working on the first I have tried it on. Way to GO!!!!!

I spoke too soon... The Framework crashed as I was testing it just then to see.

However, using your method I am able to add all my rules cleanly and it did not crash while adding the first batch of rules.

It saves a reinstall.

So I gave up and switched to N360 V5. I really was hoping for a solution. I wish that Norton soon will have an answer. Good luck folks.

When you first clean up the whole thing will work for a while until you have too many rules. The problem occurs after over 100 entries in the firewall rules.
