Geesh, this place is difficult to find! I apologize for starting this in the wrong spot, but I looked all over for a non-Norton board to post it to. Thanks for moving it! And I'm happy I click on bookmarks for topics I want to revisit, and receive the email notices...or I wouldn't have found this place. I couldn't remember the name...just remember "tech". lol Even the search option was all over the place. Anywho, I found it and I'm loving it!

Okay, I just learned something which is great for those of us who need to know our product/model info:

I was in Windows at the time, as I manually check for Window updates regularly, and I learned from this page (linked above) that by clicking "Ctrl", "Alt" and S at the same time, you can bring up all your computer's product/model/hardware, etc. info! Better than to have to look up everything individually. I didn't download the "tool", but rather just did the above command, and it brought up all my computer's info.

Also found another very informative page, for those of us who aren't hardware literate, it is a veritable encyclopedia for all things "computer". Great site!

I learned there that I DO have a firewall in my router...great stuff on that page!

So, I'm going to use the crappy Windows Firewall until I get more RAM and NIS, this week, hopefully! I used to have an internet suite. I have no idea why I didn't ask the clerk about Norton's internet suites, but like I said, I'd been off the computer for over 2 years due to several deaths in the family, preceded by long times in nursing homes and hospice. The last thing I was thinking about was my computer.

Good to join life again, and I am SO happy I found this site! I hang out here the entire time I am on the computer these days! lol What a great group of people on here!:smileyhappy:

Hi Donna, The router firewall will not have any effect on a firewall installed on your system. It is hardware-based and operates independently of your XP or any operating system.

As to your RAM, XP x86 (32 bit) will recognize a max of about 3.5GB, while XP x64 (64 bit) will recognize however much your motherboard will support. This is true of all operating systems. Windows 7, and possibly Vista, has a feature called Windows ReadyBoost which can used a USB flash drive as memory although it runs much slower than RAM.

While a 64bit system is capable of supporting RAM in the exabit amount, Windows 7 is limeted to 192GB, I think.

Thanks Britton....Hugh has been a HUGE help. He managed to find my computer and gave me a link to find all the accessories it can utilize. He gets 100 kudos from me for this one!

It's weird..I can find HP Compaq computers but NOT the 2400 version I have. The one that Hugh found seems to be the same one. I'm getting all the booklets that came with it out later (they are in storage..thank God) and see if this is the one. Crossing my fingers here.

But, I appreciate your help, too, Britton. It's good to know I can add the two 512 mb ram memory boards and my computer can operate with it. The link Hugh sent me has video explaining how to install them, too! Good stuff, eh?

I have learned so very much in just 4 days by being here, it's unbelieveable!

Need a place to give Hugh his 100 kudos! :smileyhappy:

Edit: Britton, I can't believe you built your computer!! I have the AMD Anthlon XP....did you start with that and add to it? Did you start with a HP Compaq? Kudos to you, too!

As for computers, in oh, 2000 or so I bought my first PC, a HP coincidently, with an Intel Pentium IV. Later I traded it in on one I had custom built, again Intel powered, P-4. About a year later I replaced the motherboard and went with AMD Athlon64 and went on to get a new PC case which involved removing all the parts and pieces to put them in a new case.

After that one I completely built one from scratch...it worked! My current PC is my 3rd complete build and I now have an AMD PhenomII X6 at 2.8 GHz and 12 GB of RAM.

You have an AthlonXP processor?

Yep, I have the following:

HP Compaq Presario

2400 + 2 Ghz

AMD Anthlon XP processor

256 mbs Ram

120 gbs hard drive

Have had it for well over 8 yrs...can't remember the year I bought it new. I've taken good care of it, been cautious, so it's still plugging along.

I was surprised when I did the search, just how hard it was to find my model. Lots of 2400 versions...2400 with letters after it, but not mine. Guess they figure nobody still has this version! lol

Once I get to read up and make sure this is the once that Hugh found for me, I'll order the ram. I didn't get to it, yet...it's in storage in attic.

Big thanks to you and Hugh! It's good to know I can buy the ram and that it's easy to put in myself...a huge relief!

Btw, I'm back on Chrome and it's fast again! I keep switching browsers...one will be fine for awhile, then isn't. so I switch.

Anybody have that problem with "browser war" going on?

Wizard is a strong descrption Donna, LOL.

If you want PM me your model number and I'll find your RAM. It is likely DDR but need to know what frequency,PC133, PC 266,PC400, etc.
The model should be on a label on the back, bottom, or the front panel.

Good of you to pick up on the importance of the correct memory frequency etc; for Donna's PC .......Let's hope that when the memory type is i/d' correctly ..that it isn't one of the "hard to source " types that is in short supply !

I had to purchase memory a couple of months ago for someones nine year old Packard Bell desktop that was being sold at "silly money " price levels.......Fingers crossed...... that Donnas' isn't the same :smileywink:

I've already done that for Donna and given her a link to Crucial for the correct RAM. I prefer Crucial for their qualiity and warranties and I don't think I've ever found decent RAM cheaper by much than they offer.

The perceived problem is that apparently her "HP" says 2400 as a model number on the front and the only HP 2n00 is a very old laptop that only takes up to 64MB of RAM!

Hers is a desktop and the codes on the back which she gave me from a wizard scan I think by the HP website ties in with another HP machine -- Compaq Presario 06 DC479A-ABA S3200NX

The codes in black matches what she reported to me. 2 x 512MB strips would cost about $36 in all.

I've given her the link to the support pages for that Compaq.

I was concerned about price but it's not that old:

Crucial gives:

Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 1GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.*

Their recommendation is the PC2700 so I've recommended not to go for the slightly faster PC3200 even tho' it's only a dollar more per strip since when Crucial recommend something and you follow that recommendation they guarantee it will work or they'll refund and the strips have a lifetime warranty (and lifetime does not mean until they break down! <g>)

It's not clear from the information Donna has whether her machine has 1 x 512MB or 2x 256MB but knowing the bean counters I'd reckon both slots are filled and I've suggested replacing both for the small cost and the benefits of doing it that way.

I see I need to read, lol. Good job Hugh. Hopefully donna can get her RAM from an etailor instead of Compaq. The OEM people still charge horrendous amount for easily obtained parts and accessories.

Hah! Talking behind my back, eh guys?! lol

I didn't feel well all weekend, so still haven't looked over the booklet that came with my computer (I have all the original papers in the attic).

I'm glad you came on here, Hugh. I greatly appreciate your over-the-top efforts to help me out with the ram.

I'll keep this open for now, until I get the memory sticks and know that they work...so the next person will know what and where to get their ram (IF there is anyone out there with my computer still..lol).
