I am running multiple PCs.

Using the online vault may allow access to a single source of data from all the PCs but there is no syncronisation.

I rest my case. Clearly Norton have invented their own definition of syncronisation which is not in line with the real world!

Mike

I am currently running Windows 7 Profesions 64 with SP 1 and use FF version 12.0. I recently upgraded to the lates version of Norton 360 v. 6.2.0.9. I use two computers, adesktop and a laptop and was always having a problem making sure my logins and passwords were consistent between the two. With the Norton upgrade it prompted me to store my Identity Safe information online and sync all my devices with it. I did this and can see my information on line but I lost all my Identity safe information on my local computer and do not know how to sync the information back from on line to my local computer. My logins no longer auto fill and I have to look up the information in the vault to sign in.

It is not very clearly stated but if I understand correctly once you have syncronised your local "Identity Safe" with the online version, then your local "Identity Safe" account is deleted. Thereafter it would appear that you have to use the on line version.

This means:-

1. You have to be online to be able to access your passwords.

2. You need to login twice rather than once (first your Norton account and then Identity Safe).

This all seems very amateurish. My expectation from the advertising was a local "Identity Safe" with an on line version that could be syncronised and backed up to at any time in the same way that I syncronise and back up my phone and emails.

Have I missed something or just been duped again by Symantec?

Mike

I think thet the problem arises from the "Move to on Line" option in the Local "Identity Safe". This doesn't just copy the data in your vault it transfers it and then deletes the local vault.

I have recreated my local vault and imported my back up data so I am back to status quo and now need to work out just how (or if) the syncronization works.

This whole issue is very murky and Norton should address the issue and clarify the documentation and particularly references to "Idenity Safe" in NIS2012, Stand alone, On Line as each is likely to have different quirks in their behaviour.

Mike

Hi Mikejayuk,

The following is bits and pieces from a training guide I received from Norton last December:

The updated Log-in to Identity Safe dialog provides an option to log on to the local vault, or to the online vault. If you have an online vault but not logged on to the Norton Account that holds it, then you get the Norton Account Logon pop-up on top of the Log in to Identity Safe dialog.

You can have only one online vault with one Norton Account, which is similar to a local vault that is associated with a Windows user account.

In Norton 2012, you can also move a local vault to an online vault. When a vault is moved, the original profile is deleted after it is successfully converted to a new type. The Move to Online option is available on the Settings page of a logged in local vault.

When you convert a local vault to the online vault, it must meet the minimum password strength requirement. The process flow informs to change the password before converting to the online vault in case the password is weak. To create the online vault, the master password of the vault must be minimum of eight characters long. Also, the master password must have at least one numeral and one special character in it.

Now all that said, if I remember correctly, I did something like I Exported (backedup) my ID Safe Data, created my online vault, moved the local vault to the online vault and then created a new local vault. Then I Restored (Imported) my saved ID Safe Data into the new Local Vault.

At the moment I have all my log-ins listed on both a local and and inline vault.

Not sure if this is the way to go ro not - comments?

BTW - Dick how do you access it on your work computer - I 'm guessing you do not have Norton product installed?

This is exactly what I have done.

So now on both my PC's I have a local vault and in addition I have an online vault in my Norton Account. The online vault has a different password.

I have been unable to find a proper and clear explanation about syncronization. There are lots of marketing type statements but no real unambiguous procedure to follow.

Syncronization implies the following to me, and I suspect most email and mobile phone users:-

1. More that one concurrent instances of a data set.

2. The ability to merge and align the data sets to keep them upto date on a regular and perhaps automatic basis.

From what I can see Norton seem to have invented their own definition of syncronize. With significant manual reloading of back up files. This is all very amateurish and lacks the professional approach you would expect.

If the functionality is actually there the documentation is severely lacking.

Mike

I believe the synchronization referred to in the Norton products is between multiple PC's.

By creating the online vault, you can access it from another PC by just logging in. For those of us using more than one PC in our lives, this saves having multiple instances of the same data that may not have been updated with a new password or log in. Even though you move to another machine, you do not have to worry that your passwords are not up to date on each individual computer.

This solution is arguably better than actually having 2 separate data sets, that may be different until some synch software is run. With one data set, it is always up to date.

Even with your solution of one online vault and one local vault, they will not always be in synch.
