Yep, there were two Communication Updates with 17.6..

symantec say they want to make their products "quiter", yet they're putting all these features in which display pop-up-type windows, yet symantec can't do this with Security-related issues, for example, when the V.D. are Updated.

We won't see your image for a short while yet since it is queued for checking by a moderator -- happens until you have posted for a while I think.

Tim has just posted a new message in Announcements that all English version users should have had 17.6 now. If you have not got it after checking Help/Aboput reboot your computer and run liveupdate manually and check again.

I believe that you will recieve notification of offers, add-ons, etc. (such as the free upgrade to the latest version of your Norton product) through your current Norton product (via a pop up notification or link that shows on the main page) instead of an email notification.

bjm,

Now that I see the image I think we can all say with confidence that this is new and give top marks to Norton to listening to users' complaints about pop-ups and providing an OFF switch -- there were many alarmed users when a popup about being entitled to update from NIS 16 to NIS 17 without charge who thought it was malware -- and it caan't have been easy to persuade marketing that this was wise or they would earn goodwill.

And if Norton plan to go into "$10 off if you phone us now -- our operators are waiting" let's hope that that is turn-offable too <s>

No doubt we will hear more .......

Hi, bmj_,

Thank-you for your comments. Like you mentioned, quite a lot of users would prefer to have Notifications about when Updates were installed, for example, with having a Setting to turn this off for users who would not want these Notifications; still feel that N.I.S. feels too 360-like with regard to Options, and I would welcome more Options - as am sure many other users would - in the Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirus Products with regard to this.

As some of the other forum users have guessed, this switch is designed to give users more choice. It will allow you to decide if you want to receive offers from Norton.

Of course, you will always receive service related messages, including those related to security, licensing and subscription, but when this setting is OFF, you will NOT receive promotional messages.

Hope this helps!

dnadir,

Thaks for the background -- I would agree that we all appreciate technical update information but people were alarmed by the popup that told 2009 users that they were entitled to a free upgrade and, I think but I'm not sure, to press here for more information.

That is so close to the classic malware come-on especially with them coming along named Internet Security 2010 that I hope you will examine the text and nature of that popup to avoid that association -- perhaps just tell users to go to the Norton Update Center and let them find their way?

BTW Would you classify that specific notification Service Related or Promotional ?

Or, even better, put the "Check For New Version" on the U.I. - too late for that for 2008/2009 Products - giving a little explaination when the user hovers the Mouse over it.

----------------------------------------------

Or put it in a N.I.S.-style window instead of a pop-up...

dnadir wrote:

As some of the other forum users have guessed, this switch is designed to give users more choice. It will allow you to decide if you want to receive offers from Norton.

Of course, you will always receive service related messages, including those related to security, licensing and subscription, but when this setting is OFF, you will NOT receive promotional messages.

Hope this helps!

Dan

Please explain exactly how you are going to implement this? I'd like a plain-English response here that I can refer other users to when they start enquiring about this new advertising feature...
