Issue with older Norton product

I have a client running NAV 2002 (yeah I know) on an older computer that can't really handle anything newer. Believe it or not, the definitions have been working until this week (probably around 5/11). After that, the updates cause autoprotect to crash at startup. Obviously I know it's not supported, but just wondering if anyone out there is using an old version like this and having this problem...

NAV 2002 is 8 years old and extremely out dated. Please upgrade to NAV 2010 or if you need a firewall upgrade to NIS 2010.

That's odd. You are the 2nd person today coming here and saying that NAV 2002 has like stopped working or updating or haviing some sort of problem. Perhaps that version has come to the end of it's life like Microsoft products end. There is another thread here with someone having the same sort of problem.

Yes, it's worked find up until the last definition update. It seems strange that all of a sudden it's causing a problem.

@Dieselman: As I said, I know it's very old, but I also said that the computer can't handle anything newer...it's running 9x.

Symantec maybe phasing out the older products. Anyways you are at a security risk by not keeping your product up to date.

I highly doubt he is using Windows 98 or 95 quads.

Big risk of infectious files and this will become frustrating, probably making the computer useless. Support was cut from NAV 2002 in about the year 2006 or 2007; by then, you could not receive definition updates.

Could you possibly upgrade Windows to XP service pack 3 and then that computer have the right system requirements for NIS 2010?

Dieselman326, some people still truely rely on their older computer with the older operating system, Windows 98, 95, 98SE.

This system is running an older piece of lab equipment that is unsupported on anything other than 98. Otherwise, a new computer would be the way to go. They can't upgrade the equipment now so I have to make due.

They have stated that the PC is using 9x Windows, and I have still seen a 2 PC's using Win 98, as all they wanted to do is Email, word etc.

But as it stands, it has been said the the PC is using 9x, which is why they can't run a newer Norton Product like 2009, 2010, 2011.

Why not? Becuase it's running a specialized piece of lab equipment that would cost several thousand dollars to upgrade. I've tested it myself and it will NOT operate on XP.

Believe me....you're preaching to the choir....there's nothing I can do about it. Just have to make due until the equipment can be upgraded.

Just about every single anti virus company out there has discontined 9x support. Avast,Avira,AVG,Kaspersky,Panda,Trend Micro and Norton. I do know that Clamwin still supports Windows 98.

Avast 4.8 free supports Win 98 and they will continue to produce definitions for it.

Still....maybe there's a chance that someone from Symantec can confirm a change in the definitions that is causing this? I mean I know it's not supported of course, but it would be good to know for sure.

As can be seen on this page, the earliest antivirus definitions that can be found are for NAV 2005.

floplot , would you explain what that link means? Does it mean that if someone has an out-of-date Norton security protection program, he can still get definition updates from that list?
