Hi,

The first thing we need to do is to find out the LiveUpdate error. Here is how you can find this out:

The screenshots are from a 2009 product. But the procedure is the same for 2010 also.

1 Start your Norton product.

2 In the Computer pane, click Run LiveUpdate.

3 LiveUpdate will try to connect to Internet and download the updates.

4 If the LiveUpdate fails, click View Summary that is displayed on the LiveUpdate window.

5 In the LiveUpdate Summary window, click Tech Support that is displayed under the failed update.

6 One Click Support window opens and connects to the Support.

7 Note down the exact LiveUpdate error that is displayed on the One Click Support window.

Let us know the LiveUpdate error.

I've been a big fan of NIS, but version 17.7.0.12 seems to have a problem with Windows 7 64-bit and I'm getting very annoyed. Soon after my copy was automatically upgrade from 17.6.x.x to 17.7.0.12 I started getting red flag messages from Windows saying that NIS was reporting that it wasn't working.

Somebody here suggested reinstalling NIS. I did, and the latest version available is 17.6.x.x. Things worked fine, the system eventually automatically upgraded to 17.7.0.12, and then withing days or a week or two I got the red flag messages again.

So, I uninstalled and reinstalled and once again things were fine. Again, I was automatically upgrade to 17.7.0.12, and now am getting a different red flag message from Windows. NIS reports that it is out of date. NIS shows that I am "at risk" and says the last time Live Update was run was 146 days ago.

When I click the red Fix Now button, I get success for "Check for updates" and "Download updates" but "Process updates" shows "Failed to complete" and I'm still "at risk."

What can I do? Help!

Hi CyberSky,

Have you checked your that your system clock (computer clock) is showing the right date and time?

Also, how did you uninstall NIS 2010? Did you run the Norton Removal Tool, or did you remove it via the control panel?

Did you have any other security software installed before you installed NIS 2010?

I'm not much help here - but I'm also on win 7 - 64bit and have no problems with NIS 2010, so I doubt it's a problem with the OS

Thanks for the help, guys!

Yes, my system date and time are correct.

I believe I uninstalled using the control panel. Or, I ran the installer and it said there was a Norton product running and it uninstalled it before installing. Perhaps both on different occations. I didn't know about a special removal tool, but will look for it and will it.

When I ran LiveUpdate, the AntiSpam Definitions, Web Protection Definitions, and Pulse Updates were okay. The problem is with Virus Definitions X64. Clicking the tech support link gives the following message:

Error: "Norton LiveUpdate was unable to install an update" (8920,207) when I run LiveUpdate in my Norton 2010 product.

Hi CyberSky,

What kind of router model do you have? In the thread below, it looked like the problem was being triggered by a faulty Linksys router:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NIS2010-Norton-2010-Virus-Definitions-X64-Failed-to-Complete/td-p/259123

Thank you! It was the router, a Linksys WRT110. I'm sorry, I really thought it was a NIS2010 problem because it seemed to start every time it was updated to the latest version.

I had updated my router's firmware, and had noticed that entering a bad URL now took me to some Linksys page, but didn't connect that with the NIS2010 problems. It was only when I turned on my old computer running an older version of Windows and an older version of NIS and saw that it was also telling me that the system was at risk that I realized it wasn't the OS or NIS but the router.

Apparently other Linksys routers have the option to turn this new CWA stuff off, but the WRT110 doesn't. I downgraded the firmware and soon thereafter NIS on both machines was able to download the latest updates and then reported that things are secure. Thanks, again!

HI CyberSky,

Thanks very much for the update.

I remember getting a Linksys router back when the N network first started becoming popular and had problems where the router's built in firewall was causing a lot of connectivity problems.

Since I could not find a way to turn off the SPI firewall I called Cisco support and was told there was no way to turn it off and they were actually pretty callous about it, even suggesting that I disable the Norton firewall because the one in the router was better.

I immediately refunded the router and got a different one from another company. Never had a problem since. :smileyhappy:

This was back around ~5 years ago and I know the LInksys routers have changed a lot since then but I have never forgotten that experience because of the "attitude" of the support person I talked to! :smileywink:

Best wishes.

Allen
