Thanks for the update folks!

It seems many clients are away on vacation and not responding - good for them :)

I did move to MSE on a few systems, and it seems to be working pretty well, though there were a couple of issues on installation, and it seems to be messing with the WZC service on at least one system [the wireless service] that prevents the service starting no matter what the settings are in "Services", though it MIGHT be unrelated, as they said an XP update was also done around this time.

Until I get a callback from some people [or some people complaining that MSE is not doing the job] I'll probably refrain from testing NORTON further.

Thanks again folks... maybe some others will chime in with further news, good OR bad.

MY fear is that this is only a temporary fix and the exact same issue will just arise again, and until NORTON makes some sort of statement, I just can't trust them.

After LiveUpdate received an Auto-Protect Error

I ran LiveUpdate and got the latest virus definitions this morning. When I powered back up this afternoon, Microsoft gave me the following error "Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect Service has encountered a problem and needs to close".

The icon in the system tray looked fine. When I dragged my mouse over, it said "Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Enabled" But when I doubleclicked the icon and opened Norton, the Auto-Protect showed "error" instead of "enabled". I clicked the "options" icon, so I could enable it, but I got a script error with the following info:

Line: 15
Char: 2
Error: Unspecified Error
Code: 0
URL: res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVOpts.dll/options.htm

It asked me if I wanted to continue running scripts on the page. I click YES and it gave me the same error as above. I clicked NO this time and the Options page came up, but none of the boxes were checked. So I checked the recommended boxes and clicked OK, but nothing happened. It just hung up there. So I closed the Options page and tried to run a Full System Scan, but received the following error:

"Norton Antivirus was unable to scan your computer for infections. The virus scan has failed because a critical error occured during the scan."

I have Norton Antivirus 2002, version 8.00.58. I've been running it since I got the computer and haven't had a problem with it until now. I'm guessing something went wrong with the LiveUpdate. Can you please tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

Hello fycshun

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

have Norton Antivirus 2002, version 8.00.58. I've been running it since I got the computer and haven't had a problem with it until now. I'm guessing something went wrong with the LiveUpdate. Can you please tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

I assume this isn't a typo. You are running Antivirus 2002? What is wrong may be that you are running a program which is 8 years old. Maybe your program has reached the end of it's life like Microsoft products reach the end of their life after some time. I don't know if a Norton product which is that old continues to run like forever of not.

Please confirm that you are running Norton Antivirus 2002. Thanks

Yes, it's Norton Antivirus 2002. The software has had no problems identifying viruses and I haven't had any difficulty receiving updates and virus definitions from LiveUpdate. Until this morning, it worked fine.

Obsolete? Wouldn't Norton flag something like that during LiveUpdate? Like when the software revision and registration is being verified? Wouldn't they deny the update at that point instead of proceeding as normal?

I just ran LiveUpdate again. I was hoping that it would provide a solution to the problem that I'm experiencing. But no, it stated that the software is up to date, How can I fix this?

Easily fixed. Buy NAV 2010. NAV 2002 is 8 years old and way out dated. Live Update only updates the defenitions and not the program it self when a new version comes out. Every single security company out there comes out with a new version every year. So please upgrade to NAV 2010. Also whats it your OS? What are you using for a firewall? NIS 2010 offers much more protection then NAV 2010.

Hello

You are the 2nd person today who is saying that there 2002 NAV has sort of stopped working. There may be a problem with updating to a more current Norton product since this old computer may not meet the minimun requirements for a newer program. You say that it has been doing ok till now, but the engine of the old program is not capable of finding the new types of malware out there.

Just so you know, I've been working on this for a client just today with the same problem. It seems to be a problem with the latest virus definitions. It happens with the 5/11 definitions, but I haven't tried older than that. Must have been sometime this week that something changed. Unfortunatley my client is running Windows 9x and can't use a newer program.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a 1.1Ghz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM, a 20GB hard drive with about 9GB empty. My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition with SP3. I’m using the Windows firewall.

Aside from NAV2002, I also have NAV2004 and NAV2007, but I haven't been using them, because they bog down my laptop. Bootup time with NAV2004 and NAV2007 is an excruciating 5 to 6 minutes compared to the bootup time of 1 to 2 minutes with NAV2002. Powerdown time is longer too, with the warning that Windows can't close ccApp.exe. Sometimes it won't even allow me to manually abort it. Then I have to do a hard shutdown.

Plus, other weird stuff happens with NAV2004 and NAV2007. Sometimes the system freezes up when I access NAV and I have to do a hard shutdown. During bootup I sometimes receive erroneous warnings that my firewall is down. Also the toolbar background for Internet Explorer turns black and I'm unable to read the toolbar buttons.

My main gripe though, is the bootup and powerdown times. Why does NAV2004 and NAV2007 take so long perform these tasks, compared to NAV2002? Are they running a virus scan during bootup? Is there any way to customize the bootup process? How long does NAV2010 and NIS2010 take to bootup? Do they have the same problems that I’ve listed above? I don’t want to buy a new version, if the old problems from previous versions haven’t been solved.

I am having the exact same problem / issue with nav 2003 on 3 rigs. One I own, and two are client computers. I came here to see if I am the only one.

It makes sence now.. I restored a drive image on one of the rigs and the error went away. The client called to say it was back the next morning when booting. An auto update happened updating to def's 5/11

Do I (someone) need to make a bug report.

I realize the the software is old but is still needed on these older rigs I deal with. Some are old crumby laptops that have a specific role in an organization (plc programming, etc) and are just fine for field machines to perform the task.

Additionally for me, it brought my internet (Explorer) down to a crawl at best and now I have a (new) 5 second delay opening Excel and Word files. Everything's slower. What a mess! It's unusable. Waiting for some help....
