First of all.. I apologize if this subject is already been discussed or somewhere to find on the site and feel free to point it out..

Anyway my issue is/was the following

I purchased 2010 (got free upgrade to 2011 which is very nice)

Now sometimes I tend to reinstall my windows setup to have a fresh begin again

I did this recently, so when I installed NIS 2011 and then typed in my key it said I was not allowed any more installations, that I reached the maximum allowed

Now I have to admit I contacted the online chat customer service and the technician was very helpful also fixed the problem, very satisfied customer here

But now Im worried this could happen again so is there a way to avoid it, I don't know like reclaim the installation, precautionary remove NIS before I reinstall Windows?

Hi WolfSoul,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Many times NIS will recognize that it is being installed on the same computer and still allow activation. Clearly in your case it must not have.

The "proper" way of doing this however is to uninstall NIS prior to reinstalling Windows and while connected to the Internet. Being connected to the internet will allow it to communicate with the Symantec server so that it knows it has been removed from the computer.

This will then free up a license so that after you reinstall Windows you should not have any problems.

There is always the possibility of a corner case where you might still have to contact customer service but that only rarely occurs if you have followed this procedure.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thank you so that confirms my thoughts about this

So if I follow that path do I also need to use the removal tool before reinstalling windows and everything?

The Norton removal tool will not accomplish anything if you are reinstalling Windows anyway so it is not necessary. Only a conventional uninstall to free up the license with the Symantec server.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen
