I am using Norton Internet Security 2011 on Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Before installing Norton everything was running fine. After installing Norton I find that my computer freezes after being stood for 15 minutes. The restart button will not work - in act nothing works - and all I can do is turn the power off and restart. Of course I then get the windows message asking me if I wish to start in ordinary windows etc etc.

I have no permanently disabled Norton and everything has returned to normal again.

Is Norton really crap, is is that just hype?. I speak as I find and would really love the program to work, but so far all I have had is total hasle. I'm thinking of going back to WH Smith and asking for a refund and buying Kaspersky instead!

Can anyone help??

Are you running any other anti-virus/antimalware programs in real-time on the system? If so there could possible be a conflict between them and Norton.

Did you have any other anit-virus installed prior to installing Norton? If so did you use add/reove programs and a removal tool to remove the program?

Thank you for your responses.

Prior to me installing Norton, the only other anti virus program I had installed was Trend Internet Security 2010 but I installed this through the "programs and features" in the windows 7 control panel.

It is recommended that you use the Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit to uninstall it:

http://esupport.trendmicro.com/Pages/How-to-uninstall-Trend-Micro-Internet-Security-2010.aspx

Thank you for your response. Of course we are only assuming that it is the Trend InternetSecurity 2010 which is causing the problem; it might not be!

So, havig already uninstalled the product, should I reinstal it and then remove via the diagnostic tool?

No, but you could run the uninstall tool anyway, and it should remove any leftovers.

Hello gsteen

The improper removal of any prior security products can cause problems with Norton security products. NIS 2011 might be in conflict with some of the deep parts of the prior security program. After using the removal tool of the other company, in this case Trend, it is recommended that you now uninstall NIS 2011 and then install it again so that you have a clean install of NIS 2011.

Here is the procedure to follow to accomplish this task.

1. please get your product key from www.mynortonaccount.com

2 please back up your identity safe file if you use this feature

3. please d/l and save the norton removal tool to your desktop and please be aware that it will remove all Norton products.

You can download the Norton Removal tool from

http://www.symantec.com/symnrt

Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Also please have your product key handy.

Thank you Allen for new link

4.please d/l and save NIS 2011 from here

http://www.norton.com/nis11

5 please remove NIS 2011 using the control panel method and reboot. Please stay off the net from this point on.

6. please run the Norton Removal Tool 2 times with a reboot after each run of it.

7 please run the nis 2011 install file. When it wants to get back online, let it.. It should pick up your key, if not please enter it

8 please run live update until there are no more updates and reboot.

9 please restore your identity safe file if you saved that.

10 please set NIS 2011 the way you want it and run a full manual scan.

Please come back and let us know how NIS 2011 is running now. Thanks.

However please be very careful about manually modifying the Windows registry as it is very easy to delete or modify the wrong thing and make your computer unbootable. If you find you must do this in the future, be sure to create a system restore point first.

I am a little confused on the part about Trend Internet Security 2010 because earlier you stated you had that so Bombastus provided a link to a removal tool for that and then you were not sure if you had this product after all. I am sure it would not have done any harm to have run this tool as it is designed to only remove things related to that one product. If you did not have the product it should not harm anything. Just an FYI. :smileywink:

The main thing is that things are working for you now. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes.

Allen
