NIS 2012 Netbook Edition

Hi,

I have more than 3 years left in NIS netbook edition license, now is there a netbook edition for 2012? If so, where can I download it from, because when I try to manually download it from the update centre, it gives me the option to download the normal or standard edition and not the netbook edition.

My keys for netbook edition do not work with this standard edition. Now, is norton planning to release a netbook edition for 2012, if so, then when can we expect it? I know I am very well protected with this edition, but I would like to install the newest edition as soon as possible. The new version is much more lighter compared to 2011. I hope you understand.

Thanks,

Ziaul

Hi Ziaul,

There is no netbook edition included in the 2012 product release, so if you try to upgrade your netbook edition to the 2012 version and are taken to the standard NIS version, then that is not a mistake. NIS 2011 Netbook edition users can switch to the standard NIS 2012 version, however. It should work perfectly fine on your netbook, and in this particular case, because of the discontinuation of the netbook edition, your netbook product key should also work fine with the standard version - can you please confirm if this is not the case, that way the issue can be looked into?

I keep on getting the same message " The product key is not valid for this product". When I revert back to 2011 it works.

Now, I contacted support also in regards to this matter and they took remote access of my netbook. First they tried to install it and after it didn't work, they told me I have to wait for the netbook edition. I showed them the information, that is given in the update centre, that the new version is good for netbooks also, but the support representative told me, both are different version.

What do I do now? Please advise.

Thanks,

Ziaul

And I renewed my netbook edition subscription for an additional year on August 8, 2011.

I should have been advised that within 30 days my software was to become extinct.

I would have used one of my avail installs from my "desktop" edition NIS and saved the renewal cost.

Another question: If the "desktop" NIS is installed on a netbook, do splash screens, dialog boxes, etc adjust for proper display on the netbook's screen size?

thank you,

 Jon

Hi JonBartels,

Don't worry Tim is looking into it. As for the screen adjustment, if you are using 2012, it will adjust accordingly no problem. But if you are using 2011, I don't think, it will adjust accordingly.

Thanks,

Ziaul

Jon,

Since as you say if you had known you would have to use the standard NIS on the netbook you could have avoided buying a 3PC Netbook edition when you had activation available on your standard why don't you contact Norton CUstomer Support OnLine via the CHAT route and arrange for a refund on your purchase.

You have 60 days to do this is my understanding and if you renewed online with Norton they shold have no problem crediting back to your credit card. If you bought from a third party and "renewed" by using a new KEY you can still get a refund from Norton within the 60 days.

Or they may offer to add the subscription time to your existing NIS subscription (and you might even get a bit more? <g>)

Then you can use your outstanding activation on the NIS you have to activate on the netbook.

I'm sure that the OnLine CHAT people will sort this out for you.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

What size screen does your netbook have and what is the resolution of it -- then you can be reassured about the "fit"

Please let us know how you get on ....

Hi JonBartels,

The 2012 product should activate with your Netbook Edition Product Key as long as it's the same product (Norton Internet Security). Check the Norton Update Center and it will give you the appropriate builds - http://updatecenter.norton.com

Jon even I had to wait for more than 25mins, I guess this is happening because 2012 has just been launched and everybody wants the latest and greatest software to protect them. Usually, it doesn't take more than 2mins to get in touch with support. One more thing, support doesn't have a clue what is going on. In my case, they told me after the key didn't work with the standard edition, that I have to wait for the netbook edition.

Please tell me how it goes for you, they are bunch of good folks and they will come out with some kind of resolution in your case. Also, Tim is looking into this matter, so no worries. I would advise you to install it and check if it is working, if not revert back to 2011. It hardly takes more than 10-15mins.

Tim when I check for the latest version by clicking on support--------------> version check. It shows me that I am using the latest version of NIS and doesn't give me the upgrade option. Even after manually updating from update centre, the keys don't work.

Thanks,

Ziaul

Consequences.

Jon -- only temporarily, if at all.

Firstly when you reinstall Norton often recognizes it is the same computer (just like WIndows does on a reainstall) and does not increment the activations (or in the case of Windows deny it).

Secondly, even if it does increment "on paper" a quick contaact with the Norton OnLine Support via CHAT as I indicated before in my message will have them reset the counter -- all the user feedback we get tells us they are quick painless and friendly ......

As for the decision to not support the Netbook version, dropping something is never welcomed by everyone and the Netbook edition brought a high level of complaints here. Ther's an easy workaround for not having an optical drive -- download the file -- and the other original reason, the tiny screens on the first netbooks, is a thing of the past now that 10 - 11 in netbooks are so common.

Why don't you take the easy way out and get your money back, or a subscription extension, on the Netbook renewal you paid for and use the existing spare activation you have available on your pre-existing standard edition .......

Hello JonBartels,

If you had Norton Internet Security 2011 Netbook edition, then you can install Norton Internet Security 2012 - this is what I meant by the same product. Sorry for the confusion.

The issues with the keys should be resolved now.
