Unfortunately, several of the links to fixes in these posts are no longer available. I'll run Process Explorer the next time i see this happen (probably later today).

I'm running NAV 16.8.0.41 as part of NSW 12 Premiere. I've been noticing for perhaps a year or more that ccSvcHst.exe takes up 100% of one of my cpus for an hour or more at a time, several times a day. This is the only time my laptop gets hot enough to fry an egg. Sometimes i check the NAV interface to see what it's doing after it's been running like this for a half hour or more. Usually, it says it updated definitions a few minutes ago. I check again in another half hour or so and it says it downloaded definitions again a few minutes ago. How many times in a row does NAV update definitions?

When i open the CPU graph, all the backround jobs listed show as complete. I only have idle time scan enabled, so it's probably not scanning.

What on earth could NAV be doing that's so cpu intensive for so long so many times a day when it's not scanning? Does it really take hours a day to update the virus definitions?

Finally becoming concerned that something's not right. Thanks for any help.

Norton updates about every 10 minutes. These are the "Pulse Updates", not the regular Live Updates (of which there are 2-3 a day) - they are very small updates that are downloaded in a second or so on even slow connections, and they are very likely not the cause of your problems.

When i checked the CPU usage while Norton was using 50% of my Core 2 duo, all backround jobs were listed as complete but one of them had yellow text. I didn't know what that meant. I think it was Insight Submission. When my CPU finally went back to normal (after about 2 hours), i checked the CPU usage page again. Insight Submission was now black text. That job was started at 11:40 PM last night. It says the job's duration was 11:44:15. That's almost 12 hours, right? My system was hibernating while i was sleeping for approximately 9 hours. Should Insight Submission peg my cpu and run for several hours several times a day?

What does Insight do and why would it be pegging my cpu like that? I just opened the Insight window and let it search (i've never done that before - could that be the issue? should i run insight regularly?) and it says i have 51% trusted.

Any help is appreciated.

I can't figure out how to edit my posts, so i'm adding another. I'm currently reading through all the posts on this subject that i can find in these forums. I haven't found anything to address my issue yet, but i'm still looking.
