Purely as a favour to an ex-colleague I maintain the families Pc's on a basic level.

They have the 3 machines they are allowed on the subscription for internet Security 2011 which they upgraded to earlier this year.

At the time they took advantage of the reduced subscription for 3 years.

Now they tell me they are going to buy two new machines. disposing of one of the old machines and giving me their currrent top machine which I built for them 2 years back.

So I am anticipating a dilemma when they get their new machines.....because the 3 year subscription they have for the 3 machines they want to transfer to the 2 new ones !!

Can anyone tell me how to make this a painless transaction....I fear the worst.

Hello zipdogso and welcome!

Fear not! This is easy.

Uninstall NIS 2011 from the machines to be retired.

Install and activate NIS 2011 on the new machines using the same 3 year subscription key.

If during the process you receive a message that the allowable number of activations have been exceeded, simply contact Customer Support via Instant Online Chat at this link.

Explain to them about the replacement computer situation.

They are very good at dealing with account, subscription and activation issues.

Advise your 'clients' that the subscription will not reset back to 3 years, but will continue with the remaining time left.

That should be fairly painless!

I'm not clear who is going to do the uninstalling and reinstalling or whose email address is on the MyNortonAccount.

But the PC going back to you will show up on the MyNortonAccount that their 3 PC version is linked to? Is that with your email address or theirs?

If they uninstall it they (or whoever is going to speak to Customer Support to release the activations) can truthfully say to customer support "We uninstalled those two activations" which is the basis of them telling Custome Support that they want them released for reuse -- it's better than saying "The other guy will uninstall"

But it's entirely up to you especially if the activations are not logged in like that.

Heya,

Here's a question re NIS 2012 ... I have a 3 licenses package, and I've been with NIS since 2009 ....... back then I installed it on 3 computers ... Unfortunately I remember only 2 of them :smileyhappy:

On my Account profile it says I've used all my 3 licenses ... hmmm ...... presuming the third computer is not really important to me anymore (since I cannot even remember it :) ... how can I retrieve my third license and use it somewhere else?

Thanks!

All user feedback indicates the easiest and quickest way to deal with this is to contact the OnLine Customer Support via the CHAT route -- using the computer keyboard not the phone. They have the tools to amend the database if you tell them that computer is no longer in use by you.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

Please let us know how you get on ....

@zipdogso, Once you upgrade your ex-colleague to NIS 2012 you can use Norton Management. You will be able to transfer subscriptions, remove them, and do other basic management for them. It should help you out a lot and you will not need to contact customer support in the future when they buy new computer again.

Am I missing something?

Is there a How it Works document anywhere.

Thanks Michaell -- I see from its OnLine Help that it only manages 2012 or later NIS or NAV.

So even if you have some 2012's it can't also manage the 2011's from that installation?

If I have Computer A with NIS 2012 and Norton Management installed can I manage Computer B also with NIS 2012 on it withour Computer B having NM installed?

You have to have the Norton Management Client installed on both machines in order for that to work. You only see machines that you have the Norton Management installed on when you log into Norton Management site.
