Hi All, twice in the last year i've had to use ERUNT to recover the Registry

and even though,i disabled Anti Virus,Sonar Protection,Firewall and İntrusion Prevention beforehand,

my NİS2012 afterwards became unusable and had to be Un installed / Reinstalled.

Any ideas anyone what else i could do in the future,to prevent this from happening again?

Thank you.

If you restore your registry from some earlier point, when it comes to a program such as NIS, that digs to deep into every crevice of the OS, there is no way it is going to continue working properly with an old registry. Many keys will have changed since the backup, and restoring the old ones will have them point at some things that aren't there or have changes since then.

You should probably look at why you need to restore a corrupt registry with such frequency. It should never become so messed up that you need to do anything special with it.

Hi sweman,

1. W XP HOME SP3

2. Yes

3. Yes

4.Yes

5.No,always had Norton and upgraded to the latest version

6.Yes

7.NO NO that' NOT what i meant. Due to some other (tottaly independent from the NİS2012) issues, the registry got corrupted and needed to be recovered with ERUNT.

The problem is that AFTER the NİS2012 gets disabled,(to perform the Registry recovery)RE ENABLİNG İT doesn't work and needs to be UNİNSTALLED and Reinstalled as a result.

What can i do to prevent the NİS2012 from getting unusable, that is my question.

Thank you.

Thanks for your effort Bombastus, however i don't think you are being realistic here.

Needing to Restore the Registry is something that can happen in daily computing.

That's why programs like ERUNT exist!

Twice in one year is not often,it can due to circumstances happen.Didn't need to do that at all for many years before that.

İ agree with you on the other point you made.

Thanks anyway

My experience with the registry is that ERUNT needs to be run prior to ever opening the registry so that you have an up to date backup of the registry, before you start making any changes - or even just looking around.

That said, you mentioned using ERUNT to recover the registry. I would guess you are using an old backup foubnd within C:\Windows\ERDNT.

Something you can try, is to get NIS 2012 back up and running and at that point in time make a backup of your registry.

I am not an expert in this area, but it seems like in order to restore the registry the only function in NIS that might need to be temporarily disabled may be Tamper Protection.

Anyway by taking a backup with NIS up and runing, I would think that would be the "backup registry restore" of choice in order not to lose NIS.

One addtional comment, ERUNT can be setup to make automatic backups on a periodic basis. With the automatics, you could have the most recent (with NIS runing properly) saved and also current.

I'm sure someone will jump in if I am incorrect, as I am a bit out of my comfort zone working with the registry.

Thanks for your reply yank,

ERUNT makes a new Registry recovery point every day upon starting the pc.

Have not set it for periodic auto back ups, will investigate that.

Your comments and sugestions make good sense, will give them a try..

And yes i do disable 'tamper protection, forgot to mention it.

Thanks a lot man,it's appreciated.

I have been corresponding with various forums regarding choices involving A/V, f-wall, malware and also ERUNT vs Norton and system restore.

I know enough to disable tamper protection to run system restore.

I think it follows you have to disable tamper protection to use ERUNT.

I am debating using MSE, Private Firewall, malwarebytes and also ERUNT,

OR

Norton and system restore(disabling tamper protection).

The conflicts are becoming quite numerous and confusing.

I only wanted to interject that my opinion is that you must disable tamper protection if you are to use ERUNT.

at the least.

Is there anyone who is successfully using both ERUNT and Norton and if so, what modifications do you make?

,I was going through your directions regarding purging the machine of Norton and had a question about your following quote,"

then go to your' logon name', AND 'All Users'open 'applıcatıon data' and check 'for any NIS Folder(s)

Delete them. I could not find this.

Also, two comments if I may;

Emptying the entire prefetch folder will slow it down so you must be referring to just the entries regarding Norton, and

defragmenting will slow down any images you create as backups because the program recognizes rearranged files and the image becomes larger almost the size of a full image.

There certainly are so many caveats and conflicts these days.:smileywink:

Thank you for being so generous with your time.

All is clear except your quote below.

I have Win 7 x 64 and should have stated that to begin with -sorry.

The following quote from you understandably will not work with different o.s.'s

I can get to 'users' by opening the C: drive where it has 2 folders -public and us. I open us which is who we are and see all my libraries and documents and a lot of other data but no documents and settings. Then in Windows I do not find documents + settings.Perhaps it is the 'users' folder you are referring to?

"1.C:/Documents & Settings/Anna 1?/ OR All Users,

meaning,

Double click My Computer(on your desktop)>then the C: Drive(assuming that's where your windows installation is)

then double click Documents &Settings, then double click the folder that has your name on it(that's your logon name)

then double click Application Data,

if there is anything of Norton delete it.

Where the Application Data is,you'll also see the Start Menu folder,

look in there as well.

Then again Documents &Settings, and this time double click the All Users folder,

follow the steps as with your logon name."
