That area is monitored by top level Norton Staff.

Microsoft seems more concerned with the hardware identity.

I have Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux on my home computer. I want to be able to use norton on Vista and XP without having to buy it twice because it clearly says that it is for one computer, not one operating system. Vista will not let me run the installed copy of Norton that is on XP and vice versa. Norton for Vista only has a 31 day trial whereas I have a full year with XP. Is there a way to get it on both (I do not care about linux having it).

Hi JeremyRath,

Please log into your Norton Account to see if you have the 3-user version of NIS. If so, you can use one of your activations on the Vista machine - simply click the "Renew" or "Subscribe" link on the main Norton window of the trial version and enter your Product Key to activate it. Norton will not run on Linux.

If you have a 3-user license, all three activations run concurrently from the time of the first activation - so the Vista installation and the XP installation would both expire at the same time. You won't lose any time and it won't cost you extra money. Since NIS can be purchased as a one-user or three-user license, you first need to check to see which you have.

We have the three user version, but we have three computers of which we have used it on. I don't see why I would need a new activation code for the same computer. And I can't just run the one that is installed via xp because it terminates itself or never opens because it isn't in vista's registry.

As long it's the same computer, you can activate it on more OSes at the same time and it does not cost an extra activation. The computer is registered by Norton, not the OS.

Just try to activate it with your current key and see what happens.

I have it running on more systems this way.

My understanding in the past has been that each OS counts as one activation meaning that a Dual boot computer with NIS installed on both OS's would count as two activations.

There are indications that this is somewhat of a controversy so we need to get clarification from Symantec.

In the meantime you can get with Customer Service if you choose and see what they tell you. Note that CHAT is the best option.

If you contact Customer Service, please let us know what they say and again we will update you when we get clarification from our Symantec contacts.

Best wishes.

Allen

HI JeremyRath,

Just a quick update and sorry it took a while to get back to you but I wanted to make sure I have the correct information from Symantec.

In your DUAL boot scenario, installing NIS on both OS's of that dual boot should indeed only count as ONE activation. This is from one of my Symantec reps. This is provided that ALL OS's are either Windows, or ALL MAC etc. You mentioned having XP, Vista and Linux. Which one are you having problems activating NIS on? Basically both XP and Vista should take only one activation if they are on the same computer.

Have you had a chance to check with Customer Service to see what they said? They should be able to help straighten this out for you.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be released on 2/29 and I plan to dual boot with Windows 7 and would like to see if NIS2012 will work on Windows 8.

Jim

I've multi-booted Windows 8 Developers Preview on my desktop that has XP and WIN 7 on it and it dual booted OK showing up in the usual way the option for Custom Install that one needs.

I don't see that there can be a clear answer to "will it work" any more than to "will it work with FF 11 (or FF10.n+1 for that matter <g>).

I would think it a safe prediction that it will install and some features will work unchanged and some may not ..... and the purpose of the Windows 8 beta (oops Preview) is for Microsoft and its partners to find out. I'm sure that Norton have been using the Developers Preview as well as what went before it to minimize the delay after Windows 8 hits the retail markets ..... a while yet since they've just extended the expiry date of the Devlopers Preview .... so I think you'll be OK until Norton 2013 or even 2014 ....

The real question is will the NIS 2012 license work if installed on both OS on same system as only one can run at a time. I will find out next week.

Jim

Currently all of them have W7x64 up-to-date installed, single user license. One drive has NIS and the others have 360. The 360 license is for a single user. I'm only using that temporarily until the third drive goes back into beta testing mode. No telling what will loaded on it then :smileywink:
