Hello,

I concur with both yank and Krusty13.

In IE the overlay is not an issue. It doesn't happen, at least not on my end.

With Chrome, I have to click the yellow check mark and get off right away, otherwise there's the overlay.

Although even with the overlay, you can still click 'Report Site' and 'Settings'.

I just get off right away, then there is no overlay.

Edjr60

Windows XP SP3, NIS 2012 (19.6.1.8) Chrome 17.0.963.79, IE 8

I tired to duplicate this and at first I could not. Ifinally did though - I'll try ot explain it as I find it acting:

If I hover over the Norton Check Mark, permit the popup "Click here to View Options" to appear, and then click on the Norton Check Mark, everything works as it is supposed - in other words the popup disappears and the full menu is displayed.

Now if I go directly to the Norton Check Mark and click on it without permitting the "Click here to View Options", the the menu will appear and the popup will over lay as bjm's image shows.

Now I also noticed that the popup appearing depends on how quickly you move off of the Norton Check Mark. If I leave the mouse over the Chek Mark after clicking it, the popup appears.

If I click on the Check Mark and am quick enough moving off of the check mark, the menu appears as normal without the popup.

Hope I explained that clearly ernough and perhpas someone else can verify I am not losing it! :smileytongue:

On NIS 2010, things work as desired. The popup shows up when you hover over the menuitem - and does not appear no matter what you do, when the dropdown menu is activated. If you hover over the menuitem again, once you have dismissed the dropdown, the popup reappears.

2. On NIS 2012, The popup appears the first time I hover over a menuitem - and at all other times - as long as I do not activate the dropdown. Once I have activated that particular dropdown, the popup will no longer appear during that Browser session. To reactivate the popup, it is necessary to shut down and restart Internet Explorer 8. This occurs with all three menuitems.

Eg: If I open the checkmark dropdown, the popup for that item will not reappear once I close the checkmark dropdown, even if I hover over the checkmark for many seconds. The other two popups still appear. If I subsequently open the Shopping dropdown, I lose that popup as well as the original checkmark popup. The Identity Safe popup still appears. If I subsequently open the Identity Safe popup, all three popups are unavailable until such time as I shut down and restart Internet Explorer 8. This occurs no matter which order I use to activate any of the three dropdowns.

Possible explanation:

In the Video Drivers for any machine, there is a "go fast" feature called "Bitmap Caching". This routine speeds up screen redraws for items that have been previously displayed on the screen. Bitmap Caching permits much faster response for popup windows - as well as when moving things around on the screen. (Use the default VGA Windows Drivers for your Video Card for an example of how much things slow down when you don't have this feature enabled.)

Bitmap caching requires some housekeeping on the part of Application programmers - to ensure that a popup appears when it should and does not overlay a menuitem when it should not. This is the cause of the infamous "can't get the date popup to appear when I hover over the clock" bug - which is identical to the Item 2 description above. Bitmap caching is also responsible for the "Popup is sometimes occluded by the taskbar when hovering over items in the System Tray" bug.

Possible solution:

Upgrade your video drivers. In the early days of Bitmap Caching (before the phenomenon described above was understood) there were lots of problems with menuitems "disappearing" at inappropriate moments. This was a notorious problem with early ATI Video Drivers, but Nvidia has not been immune to the problem either.

Every once in a while, some other "go fast" feature introduced in a new Video Driver release breaks the standard way that Bitmap Caching is handled. In that case, the only solution is to revert to an earlier version of the Video Drivers - or wait for a subsequent release that fixes the Bitmap Caching problem while leaving the other "go fast" routines intact.

Hope this helps.

I can reproduce the overlay effect only on the far left 'Norton' checkmark. This does not appear at all on the SafeWeb or Identity Safe sections. As noted above, if I wait for the overlay to appear before clicking the checkmark the overlay disappears when clicked. Firefox 10.0.2.

Elsewhere,

As noted by bjm_ and peterweb, when I hover over Identity Safe the overlay does not display in Firefox and Identity Safe works as expected when clicked.

Thanks, Dave.

I have noticed with Chrome it does not matter if I click to view options before or after the overlay is displayed it still seems to cover "Report a site" and "Settings" although these options are still clickable.

Thanks, Dave.
