Hi cglen,

Hello and Welcome to Norton Forums.

I would like to check if the Norton Security Map has something to do with it.

I would like you to check if the both the computers have a full trust set for the other. To check the same. Open Norton -> Click on Advanced -> Click on Security Map. You should see your computer and the other computer in the window. Your computer name wil have a green check on it. Select the other computer you want to share data with. If the status is Protected change the same to Full trust. Try the same step on both the computers.

Please let us know if the issues were fixed

I used to be able to share files between my laptop (WIN7 32 bit) and my desktop(WIN 7 64 bit) but now i cna only communicate in one direction fom the laptop. the desktop cannot open files on the laptop and I keep getting a message that is likely my firewall. I have tried all kinds of settings changes and cannot access the files. When I go to my computer on the descktop and open network it sees the laptop but cannot display or open any files.

This used to work fine but I can't point to exactly when it stopped working so I'm not sure if its a Norton firewall problem but my network program Cisco Systems Netmagic 5.5 pro seems to think that Norton is the problem

Here is my take.

Getting full control over file sharing particularly with multi platforms can be a nightmare. There are so many settings and changes that could be tried, you would not believe. You can google and you will get an idea.

Just to illustrate. I recently had a situation in which suddenly the shared computer or shared files and folders could not be seen. I tried everything. Then I decided to change the network name and everything started working again. But my original network name could not have been blacklisted, so in truth no good reason.

One test is simply to disable the NIS smart firewall. If that does not help (and you can disable permanently and reboot to test)

then I suggest it is not the firewall.

Other ideas are to create guest account and assign passwords.

It is certainly something I always check with users on NIS.
